He had 100 chances....I never understood KW giving him an extension.
At the time KW gave him the extension he was one of our few reliable relievers in 2006. He pitched pretty well that year down the stretch. If you recall, the Sox bullpen troubles began that year early. KW had to make some changes on the fly that year and he brought in David Riske and Mike MacDougal via trade to plug the leaky bullpen. MacDougal actually was a big help that year but from April 2007 on, the wheels completely came off the wagon for him. Whatever mojo MacDougal once had, it vanished in the "season of sucking" that was 2007. Sometimes you roll the dice with a contract and it doesn't work out. This is one of those deals. Overall, KW has done a good job avoiding the horrible contracts. Think how saddled this franchise would be if we locked up guys like Andruw Jones, Juan Pierre, or Barry Zito to the kind of contracts those players received. MacDougal's contract barely registers compared to blunders like that.

Not sure it has anything to do with confidence. I bet this inconsistancy is what KC fans probably saw daily when he was with their club. I mean, he was their closer but when he was in that position he blew a quarter of his save opprotunities. He had a good 2005 and a really good 2006 but other than those instances he's never really been a stud.

Great post. Let's see what Egbert can do. I guess this moves D.J. Carrasco up to middle relief.

And shame on some of you for this constant negativity on certain White Sox players. They're members of the team and at least deserving of some respect. We all have our favorites and not-so-favorites, but when they're wearing the uniform, they're all our Sox.

Mike MacDougal is living proof that Don Cooper lacks the supernatural powers that many seem to think he possesses. For those who want the Sox to take a flier on every pitcher released by another organization that has a power arm or has had the slightest whiff of success, let this be a lesson to you. Coop is great, but he can't fix everyone!

I think the Sox are one arm short. I feel pretty good about Jenks, Thornton, Linebrink and Dotel. Other teams in our division are envious of that foursome. Not even Minnesota has that kind of strength at the back end of the bullpen, especially with Crain on the shelf.

But games like last night's are the ones where the Sox have an issue. We're down 5-3 or whatever in the sixth. Our starter is tiring and/or ineffective. We need that guy to come in and keep the score close, as opposed to throwing gasoline on the fire and making it a 10-3 game.

Hawk talks a lot about teams needing a "good first man out." That's the element the Sox bullpen is lacking right now. Richard could be an answer, but he isn't getting it done right now. Carrasco is a journeyman, so we shouldn't expect much. Egbert, I need to see more before I can comment.

Frater Perdurabo
04-22-2009, 08:58 PM
I think the Sox are one arm short. I feel pretty good about Jenks, Thornton, Linebrink and Dotel.

I look at it another way. The Sox can afford to have one reliever suck.

In 2005, only Marte sucked, and they won 99 games and the World Series.

In 2006, Politte and Cotts both sucked, and thus they won 90 games and finished third.

In 2007, almost everybody but Jenks and Thornton sucked. The pen blew 18 leads, and they lost 90 games.

In 2008, they had a great pen going until Jenks got hurt and Linebrink couldn't handle the 9th, and then after Jenks returned Linebrink got hurt. They squeaked into the playoffs.

So my theory is this: as goes the pen, so goes the season.

Our conclusion is the same: get one more arm.

My solution is this: trade for a bona fide closer, and make him the 8th inning man. That bumps everyone back an inning, so Dotel/Thornton/Linebrink could be the "first man out."

Lip Man 1
04-22-2009, 10:22 PM
Frater:

Closers like to close (aka what happens when Jenks comes in, in a non save situation) and they are expensive to trade for.

I'd suggest more along the lines of a good middle relief guy or another set up man along the lines of a Scot Shields (not him necessarily but of his ilk...)

But yes I agree another arm is a need (and maybe another starter)
