Jeff Nieman, this evening's starter for Tampa?

He doesn't have much of a track record, a career record of 2-4, a career ERA of over eight and who has only thrown about 26 innings in the bigs.

Anyone have the scouting report?

Thome: 1 for 1 with a 3 run HR, 2 BB
Konerko: 1 for 2 with a 2 run HR, 1 HBP

Didn't we face Niemann last year?

EDIT: Yes...last year he went 3 1/3 IP with 8 R, 5 earned and gave up two HR's. I was at that game...

Niemann:

BBA # 4 Rays Prospect in 07, # 7 in '08 and #10 this year.

He's been injury prone since the Rays signed him. He had a relatively healthy '07, but got hurt again in '08. He's got some zip on the fastball, but lost velocity as injuries have been taking their toll.

He also has a good curve that's slider-like at times, and a splitter he picked up last year. He tends to get behind in the count and leave pitches up. He's also easy to steal off of.

The Rays had high hopes getting him in as a top 3 starter, but now since injuries have deteriorated his stuff a bit, they're thinking about a bullpen role. I think he got the #5 starter role when Price faltered this spring.

But hey, we got 2 off him early. :D Keep it up.
