One down, One hundred sixty one to go!

Team effort to win this one. I like what I saw out of Getz both on the field and as a baserunner.

Wise needs to relax (and we need to give him just a few games before we freak out about his play.)

The station-to-station players need a mixup, somehow. I would put Alexei in front of AJ.

And kudos to Mark to keep the Sox in it, even when he wasn't at his best.....

Positives:
-Youngsters- Getz and Fields trying something new in the station to station offense was nice to see
-Holding the Royals to low runs in a day where Buehrle was really off (bullpen along with that positive)

Negatives:
-This offense was cringeworthy throughout a lot of this game, especially the 2nd inning. 4 hits, 1 run, terrible (and along with that, another Cox mistake if it was his decision to send Dye home)
-Is Dewayne Wise really our opening day leadoff hitter?

I'm still kind of worried about this team (because I thought the offense needed a new dynamic to avoid this station to station/wait for the HR game, and I worry about the bullpen with names like Macdougal, Carrasco, and who knows what you'll get from Linebrink and co), but a nice come from behind win

Our pitching was pretty damn good today. Buerhle wasn't lights out but he got away with 2ER. The pen was great, it was nice to see Richard picking up from where he left off last season. I loved the fact that we were moving people around the bases with singles and a nice bunt...and of course BIG JIM!

Meche was lites-out today...am not surprised we struggled against him. The guy was popping it at 94 and dotting the corners...not facing that spring training pitching anymore ,Sox.

Which is why is was great to comeback and get this win. Our ace was off his normal command yet we beat their ace at his best..all good.

Wise looked overmatched today, but Meche was good enough that I give him a pass today.

Fields really is excited in the postgame, rightfully so. He had a solid opener. Getz also. PK had a solid day at the plate,JD looked better than in spring training, and Big Jim...what can you say? He is da man!! That homer was very similar to his ''biggest homer in his career'' vs Twins in tie-break game...stayed closed, went with a low outside pitch and hit a bomb!!!!

Loved seeing the smart ball- rally in the eighth- took me back a three and a half years.

Really, really, really dislike Wise hitting. The guy was never anything special, why is he hitting for a team that wishes to win a world series? Even last year he never did that well, averaged close to .250, is that really that special?

If his obp is .350, please let him stay, but that is not what it has looked like.

A little note about Quentin: I am a huge supporter of anything he does, and believe that he will be an all-star by the end of the season. I saw him putting his head off the ball while he was swinging, and good hitters have their head on the ball at all times. I am going to mark that as first game jitters, but that is something I will keep an eye on.

Other then that though, White Sox winner means a happy me.

Buehrle did a great job of minimizing damage in all of those jams. Our bullpen was outstanding. How about Clayton Richard today?

And the Sox played good defense. I was worried about Getz and Fields more with the glove than with the bat, but both were excellent today. Huge play by Fields to help Buehrle out in the fifth.

The Sox own Farnsworth. Coming into today, he had an 8.10 ERA in 27 career games against the Sox, including 10 HRs allowed in 26-plus innings. Those numbers just got worse.

Can't believe KC didn't bring in a lefty to face Thome. Big Jim got a good one to hit, and he did not miss.

Nice win by the Sox today. I didn't see the game, but from what I heard I am REALLY impressed with Getz in today's game. Of course along with Richard and Fields.

On the opposite end, I'm sure that Ramirez and TCQ will be fine. It's just the first game.

Same goes for Wise.

That play by Buehrle in the 4th was pretty smooth too.

I have class soon, so I have to go, but these are my reflections from the game:

It is a testament to Buerhle that on a day when he had nothing, he kept us in the game. That's all a starter can do!

I am becoming a big fan of Chris Getz.

Josh Fields bunt was a thing of beauty, but the real brilliant play was when Wise's bunt went foul, he saw that Olivo would have to dive and tagged from first, had Olivo held onto the bunt, Fields would have been safe at second.

DeWayne Wise looked lost at the plate today.

I might be a little too excited, but what the hell? It was a great day for baseball.

What an AMAZING afternoon at the ballpark! Mad props to Jim Thome for his bomb in the 8th and his overall 3-for-4 afternoon. Buehrle's line wasn't bad, but his pitch count was up there early on, so I knew it was going to be an early afternoon for him.

Wow, Quentin really sucked today. We should replace him with Anderson. This is really pissing me off, he SUCKS! http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/7199/angryfireteal.gif Seriously though... why all the hate on Wise? Just wait 2 or 3 weeks then do what you need to do. Whoever was booing Wise were more obnoxious than Cubs fans.

Aside from the booing... that was a GREAT GAME! I was depressed most of the game, but after the homerun I was REALLY HAPPY! 1st place is always fun! :bandance:

Just got home. My take on the game was the Royals' threw their best pitcher out there and he was dominant. The Sox had bases loaded and blew it (saved by Josh Fields getting an RBI hit).

Buehrle was effective. Defense was good. I was just waiting for a battle of bullpens. When Buehrle was taken out, the Sox bullpen was fabulous. When I saw the Royals' trot out the cub factor Farnsworth, I knew we would win. It's like when they would trot out gobble, we would win. When Thome hit that ball, the park was electric. Glad I was there.

I'm so confident of this bullpen just by seeing what I saw today. Richard and Dotel were lights out. I've always been uneasy about Dotel, especially today, but it looks like we might have the best pen in the division.

Very surreal to see baseball back on the south side. Great effort from the 'pen, which is typically a strength in April. Let's get a laugher tomorrow to keep those arms fresh for the dog days! Great start, boys!

I actually didn't watch the game live, I was out at Idaho State University softball helping the SID install a manually operated scoreboard made out of plywood with numeric hanging cutouts. It's actually very cool looking.

I taped the game off the satellite because this week the MLB Extra Innings package via DirecTV is free (unfortunately I'm not in a position to purchase the package, all I can afford is the audio which is 15 bucks) and I take advantage of the opportunity.

Just scanned through it and saw the following:

1. Buehrle pitched with a lot of guts. That 5th inning could have been awful...instead he held them to one run and gave the Sox a chance.

2. The mixture of 'small ball' and 'big ball' which accounted for the runs. The Sox MUST do this throughout the year to be successful. If it's more of the same 'swing for the fences', 'beer league softball mentality' it could be dicey at best.

3. DeWayne Wise is not off to a good start to say the least. This bears watching. Mark Gonzales on his blog said that Kenny was a little sensitive (my word not Mark's) about the constant questioning of the leadoff situation before the game today. Wise didn't help Kenny's blood pressure I'm sure.

4. Didn't like the fact that the Sox wasted a potential big inning in the 2nd. I had bad flashbacks to last season where it would take four hits to get a run (sometimes more). It evened up when K.C. blew a golden chance in the 5th inning though.

5. Was base running emphasized in the spring? Didn't look like it today.

Nice to see Billy throw out the first pitch. I just called him and kidded that he short armed that breaking ball and that he'd have to work on that for next season!

Nice to start the season with a win.

Maybe I just forgot about defense with Wise last year because the only thing I really remember is him coming through with the hit a few times in a key moment.

My thoughts:

Josh Fields was outstanding today. That throw to the plate in the 5th was fantastic. No room for error on the jump throw over the runner. Great decision and execution on the bunt when he saw Alex Gordon playing so deep. Also on the first botched bunt attempt from Wise he was ready to tag to bail Dewayne out. We will see how he works out in the field, but his stick is better than Crede's, I am sure of that. You think he has been spending time with Carlos this spring? His stance looks awfully similar.

Good to see Getz grab a couple of hits and a succesful hit and run:o:

Great to see Thome's approach today. Went up the middle on Meche and was looking to do it versus Farnsworth, but elevated it for a home run.

Buehrle didn't have his command today and still gutted through 5 innings. I loved Ozzie's quote in the press conference, "Buehrle struggled, Jesus he was bad".

I am sure it has been beaten to death in this thread already(I haven't read through, I just got home) but we know exactly Dewayne Wise is. He is a 4th outfielder at best, he has no business starting every day and leading off. Just give BA the at bats and find out once and for all if he can play every day.

A texting exchange I had today,
2:42: Friend - Good to see the bats show up today.
2:43: Me - Don't worry, we are just waiting for Farnsworth.

Glad to have baseball back in my life.

It was a great game, we sat in the upper deck on the third base line. We were in the sun all day, and it felt great. I actually stripped down to just my t-shirt for a few innings.

The pregame stuff top notch as usual. There is nothing cooler than a pregame flyover. It gives me the chills and makes me feel proud to be an American.

My take on the game was that Buehrle was off, though he battled his butt off. Richard, Dotel and Jenks looked great. Getz showed promise both with the glove and the bat. Thome had a great day, his HR was a bomb! One funny note, was at the beginning of the game during the infielders warmups. During Fields first grounder, he threw the ball about 5 feet over Paulies head. Needless to say, I've seen plenty of games before, and I don't ever think I've seen a throw that bad during warmups. I hope it was just opening day nerves and not a sign of errors to come.

During the game, a friend messaged me that AJ had been thrown out stretching at second. That was what the ESPN game cast said. However, reading between the lines, I have to figure that he had a single and was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double.

The way the recap read, it looked like he had made it to second and was thrown out for stretching there!

This was a double for about 65% of the league (down the line ratlling off the wall) but AJ was out by about seven steps.

Just a few thoughts as I nurse a mean case of sunburn the day after a snow storm:

The kids are all right. Fields was great in the field (athough there was one single to his left where my entire section blurted out "Crede woulda had that.") and of course at the plate. Getz was also solid.

Little surprised by the boo birds all over Wise. I'm not a huge fan, if we boo every time someone misses a bunt we're in for a long year.

Bullpen downright surprised. Clayton was tremendous. He will prove what a long reliever can do for a club. After ST I was worried about Dotel and he showed up. Bobby just pitches better with a man on base.

The station to station to station bit is getting old.

Bad day for Quentin, but you feel like its a matter of time.

This will forever be known as the Thome Opener.

I thought today's game was a mirror image of many of our victories last year. 3 straight hits and no runs; 2 straight pop-outs. Looks like we'll leave the bases loaded after no outs, then Josh comes through. JD is out at the plate by 40 feet.
Mark battles...bullpen was great. Thome with a late inning blast to win it.

Remember, the 'pen was dominant in the first half of last year, and then they hit the proverbial wall. IF they can perform to their abilities, good things will happen.

Other than the obvious answer of Thome's game saving three-run homer, the two best plays of the game were Fields laying down a textbook bunt to lead off the 8th and Getz' hustle to stretch a single into a double.

Also as a positive, I wanted to thank KC's manager for not bringing in a lefty against Thome, likely cost them the game

I don't see why people feel so strongly of Wise deserving time, it's not like he's a prospect, this is a career minor leaguer, who got time last year. From that time, we learned he is a butcher in an easy OF position, and had a little dreamland period where he got a few hits, but is nothing special, and showed nothing that says he is deserving to leadoff, play CF, start on opening day, etc. Even though he looked lost at the plate and his bunt attempts were atrocious, the angst is warranted from more than today

How bout the small ball? A bunt...in fact a PERFECT bunt...just wonderful!

Only negative...ugh Dewayne Wise....

:bandance::bandance::bandance::bandance::bandance: Why pick on Wise? So he had a bad day but he wasn't the only player not to get a hit. I remember one game when Thome got a golden sombrero.

I was there and saw that too... that was a very heads up play...

What an AMAZING afternoon at the ballpark! Mad props to Jim Thome for his bomb in the 8th and his overall 3-for-4 afternoon. Buehrle's line wasn't bad, but his pitch count was up there early on, so I knew it was going to be an early afternoon for him.

I like the defensive play Fields made on the throw home which saved at least one run. Two years ago (or even last year) on a chopper like that carrying him away from 3rd he would have done one of three things:

1. force a throw to 2nd (which probably would not be in time);
2. force a throw to 2nd (which probably would go into right field); or
3. hesitate and throw the ball to 1st (longest throw to get an out).

Nice, smart play on his part which I hope to see more of (and I'm not going to get into his defensive limitations at 3rd b/c that horse has been beaten to death like the Anderson/Wise CF discussions).

I think I am most excited to see our bullpen back in form. Granted it's only one day, but the only person that didn't have his best stuff was Jenks, and he still shut them out. I am EXTREMELY positive about Richard in long relief. He could be an innings eater as well as a bullpen savior. Though it won't be as noticed as other statistics in the bullpen, this is huge for the White Sox in the long run. Hopefully he continues performing how he started mid- September of last year. If he does, our bullpen might be a top 5 in the majors.

Yet again first day, but you never know- and good bullpens usually go hand in hand with good teams.

I really like the way Richard pitched yesterday. My biggest concerns this year are solving our (seemingly never-ending) OBP problem, and if the young arms be ready if (when?) Contreras and/or Colon go down for a significant stretch. Hopefully Poreda will be ready to pitch as well.

Only blight on a beautiful day was the unconscionable booing of one of our own players who was trying his very best and just came up short. I don't care where you stand on the issue, anyone who booed Wise yesterday is simply not a Sox fan in my estimation, and ought to go find someone else to "root" for. I'm sure no one in the park felt worse than Wise when he failed to get those bunts down.

I don't know what people expect out of him. He's a career minor leaguer who has never shown any real proficiency in baseball. But he's a grinder, he plays the game right, and he's the kind of man we as fans should be proud is wearing a uniform. I don't know if he'll be in CF for 162 games or if he'll be on the bench tonight, but I know he'll wear it with dignity either way, and for that every Sox fan should applaud him.

While it was only one game, not being able to get a bunt down in a crucial situation almost always deserves criticism, and plus I think many fans were booing the fact that Wise is the leadoff guy, not Wise himself. Remember in 2005, the (deserved, in my opinion) booing of Damaso Marte all year made Ozzie hesitant to even put him in a home game. If you feel strongly enough, you can affect the manager's decisions.

Funny, but I don't remember anyone booing AJ or Alexei for not driving a runner in with the bases loaded and less than 2 outs yesterday, or TCQ for not driving in a run with a man on 3rd and less than 2 outs. But that's obviously because they aren't Dewayne Wise.

Booing the home team is lame and should be reserved for Yankees' fans. It doesn't help anything, it's more likely to make a situation worse.

More like because DeWayne Wise isn't those guys. Those guys come through often enough that when they fail, it is shrugged off. Besides, it's not their job to lay down sac bunts, its to drive in runs. Wise is not an RBI guy, he should be able to at least give himself up.

Yes, please tell us if your method can also apply to posting player's stat lines.

thanks

That defensive play by Fields made me feel better about him than any of his offense yesterday, which was also quite good. RBI single, clutch bunt to start off the 8th.

There never should have been any question that Fields has a strong, accurate arm, even on the move. We've seen that before, and it's a strength over Crede. I want to see how the rest of defense has developed.

Just encapsulate it in CODE tags. There's an icon for it (the pound sign) when creating a post.

That was definitely encouraging. For Fields, I don't expect Gold Glove calibur defense. I just want him to make the routine plays and make the routine throws. If he does this, I'm happy. Plays like the one he made yesterday are a bonus IMO.

It's Dankerific

That was kind of my point. Making a play like this balances out a muff he might make in another situation. Knowing that he has the ability to make some + plays (and not just the ordinary ones) was a big positive for me watching the game.

Yeah, this is the button: http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/vbulletin/images/editor/code.gif, it's right above the text message box. All text and spaces are the same length so it's easy to line things up correctly.

I have done that before and it turns into a huge box that scrolls horizontally, and not nicely lined up like the standings.

Well the box does have a size limit, so any text that exceeds that, you'll have to scroll either horizontally or vertically to see.

As for lining things up, you kind of have to eyeball it (use the preview post feature), but once you sort of have everything in the general place, it's a whole lot easier.

The standings are real easy to do because there's not that much data to post, even a brain dead monkey could make a nice looking table for 5 rows with 4 columns each.
