Wow, it looks like the Cubs now gave up quite a bit to get Harden from the As.

Also, since last year all I've heard from my Cubs fan friends is how Samardzija is going to be the next great thing, but now he's starting the year in AAA. Was he hurt, or just plain sucking this spring?

Samardzija still has options. That's the only reason he didn't make their team. Cubs wanted to keep a rule 5 pick.

They also want him starting in AAA rather than in the bullpen in the majors.

What did they give up?

a low level catcher, Murton (who is a career AAAA type guy) and Eric Patterson who's luster wore off?

I guess I see your point. But the key to the deal was Gallagher. And other than smashing Watermelons, I don't see the big deal. He didn't make the starting rotation for Oakland, lost out to Braden, Eveland, Anderson, Cahill and Outman... YUCK.

That and the fact he still has a lot of refining to do, as he's not exactly been lights out in the minors. He did well in the bullpen last year, but with the options CHC had, I think they did the right thing.

I wouldn't mind the Sox picking up Gaudin.

I'd rather pay him a minor league salary over Gobble. At least Gaudin has done something.

I thought Gaudin pitched well last year as well as for the A's. They cut him because of a bad spring?

They had 3 RP's out of options and only 2 spots. Guess they felt Gaudin has the least potential of of the 3. And, yeah Gaudin is probably better than both Carrasco and MacDougal so I'd be all for signing him.

I think he was pretty poor last year after the Cubs picked him up, and i believe he was making more than anyone else they wanted to keep, Angel Guzman. They also wanted to keep their rule 5 draft pick.
