Ditto, and the Sox have announced in the media that they were going to wait until tomorrow to make the call.

Which is prudent, since the storm tonight is shifting a bit, which means we won't get as much snow. Now they're saying 1-2" max.

NOAA says only 29% chance of precip starting at 2am tonight though 8pm tomorrow.

I won't be a nice day tomorrow by any means, but they should be able to play.

Similar or lesser value ticket. Depending on where you got your seats, you can get better ones on a lower valued date to make up the price difference.

I just hope we can do this online, and not have to run down to 35th Street.

I agree that: (a) it was a great move to postpone the game and (b) teams in the north without a dome should not be opening at home during the first week of April.

I'm also glad that the Sox made the announcement tonight. Hopefully, those who want to go to the opener can change their schedules. Now, if the weather for Tuesday is just as inclement (and the current forecast call for snow flurries and a high of 39), then I hope the Sox do the right thing and postpone the opener to Wednesday (partly sunny with a high of 52) and just play the day/night doubleheader.

Or there's a Thursday in August that's a day off after a 3 game set @ The Cell with KC if Tuesday is postponed. That makes Wednesday the opener. I don't think the Sox will want to lose the gate Tuesday. No way they play a night game Wed or Thurs in early April.

The funny thing is, this season started a week later than usual. They either have to cut the schedule, schedule doubleheaders, even if they are day/night, or play until the midddle of November to be able to avoid it. Cold weather teams, even if they play the first 2 weeks on the road are going to run into weather problems.

I think eventually every stadium will have some sort of temporary dome like the one they are considering for Tampa. Almost like a giant sail that can be closed in the event of precipitation. The cold they will always have to deal with.

I'm just happy that they decided to postpone a day ahead of time. It would have been a royal pain in the ass to bundle up, go to USCF, and then learn that the game has been postponed, wasting a day off, particularly when getting Tuesday off as well would have been iffy at best.

And if they decide that Tuesday's weather will be no better, I sure hope that they postpone that game Monday night as well.

A friend of mine sold tickets on Stubhub for OD. He's not sure what happens? Anyone know? Does the buyer still have them for whenever that game is made up? Or does he now have them back, owe someone money, and have tickets to Tuesday?

The buyer has to honor the agreement with Stubhub. The tickets are just like anyone else's tickets, honored for Tuesday's game. They can be exchanged at the ball park for games that the Sox stated in their email in April for equal or less value (face value price).

Ok - so the seller no longer has anything to do with these tickets...and has cash in his pocket regardless of what the buy chooses to do with the seats?

Similar or lesser value ticket. Depending on where you got your seats, you can get better ones on a lower valued date to make up the price difference.

I just hope we can do this online, and not have to run down to 35th Street.

I kind of wish they would just treat it like a box office credit, even if it is only for one of those April games. It sucks if you have 2 lower box tix with a face value totaling $104 you can only exchange them 1:1, not 1:2 even if then tix you are getting are half the opening day price.

I'm in the north suburbs, and it's been a fine day, although pretty cold. I think they probably made the right decision, though - there was a lot of snow on the ground this morning (it's mostly all melted) and from the forcast, it could have been bad.

Yes. I'm at UIC and they certainly could have played the game. The sun came out around 3 or 3:15 and it is really beautiful right now. Cold, but nice. They shouldn't have cancelled the game in my opinion, but I understand that they were hedging their bet.

St. Louis was worse with their higher winds. I go to the April games after opening day and I've been to many colder than today. The Sox dropped the ball on this one, and honestly, they've handled a few postponed games terribly these past few years *waits for barrage of personal insults for questioning anything the Sox organization does*

dickallen15

They easily could have played. It was near 40 with an 8 mph wind. The "snow" mentioned above were flurries that were very brief. In fact, some of the game would have been under the sun.

I don't blame the White Sox however. It was better to make the decision as early as possible and its quite obvious professionals that are paid a lot of money missed on the forecast.

As far as it being too cold causing injuries, Tuesday is only going to be a few degrees warmer, and they will definitely play unless some unexpected blizzard arrives.

I say it sucks if you had tickets and can't attend Tuesday, but blame the weatherman not the White Sox. They were trying to make it easier for as many as possible. If they waited until the morning and had to call the game, a lot more people would have been screwed.

Interesting. Guess it would make sense that it would be an overall decision, considering that they want to ensure they kick off the year right. I guess I should have generalized my question a little bit more; is this usually how postponements are decided, or does it vary from situation to situation?

It would have been a pretty nice day for January, not April. They could have played today but it would have been miserable. That being said, tomorrow won't be much better.

I know we typically complain when the Sox open the first week on the road but honestly we may play in the worse typical. April weather in baseball, along with Detroit and Cleveland (since Toronto, Minny and Milwaukee are in domes). I for one hope the Sox open on the road in the future.

I was at the Bears/Packers' game last December where the wind chill was -8. Coldest game at kickoff in the history of the Bears playing at Soldier Field. That did not stop some people (male and female) from taking off their shirts.

It is up to you when it is too cold to wear shorts. Remember that in this weather it is usually colder inside the park than it is outside.

Because the game was called off. If the game was supposed to be played, they would have had the field ready. KC held a full workout there yesterday. Most Chicago area high schools played their scheduled games as well.
