View Full Version : What's your start-the-season ritual?

I'm sure we're all starting to go through our annual rituals as Opening Day approaches. I've placed pocket schedules throughout my house, even the bathrooms. On Monday, I'll turn on all my TV's and one radio before leaving for work so that our empty house is nonetheless filled with the glorious sights and sounds of White Sox baseball. We host a party in our garage on the first Friday night away game of the season - this year April 17.

Let's hear some other start-the-season rituals

I call all my friends and wish them a "Happy New Year." Regardless of what the calenders say, for me the year doesn't start until Opening day.

If I don't have tickets to Opening day, I grill a mountain of Bests Koshers and watch the game with my daughter, father and sister - my wife could care less.

I have enough Koshers on ice to last at least 3/4 of the season.

Awesome idea. Unless you have this copyrighted, I'm going to adopt your strategy and go with it!

I always go to my cousins place in lakeview, drink the night before OD, watch major league once or twice, get up the next morning and take the redline to Comiskey, and hope for a white sox winner. This has been the tradition the last few years for us now and we enjoy it very much.

I'll watch Field of Dreams at some point this weekend. Eight Men Out if I have time.

And in 2006, I added the White Sox World Series DVD to that list.

I should dust mine off sometime. I haven't used my DVD player very much lately. I'll admit, I never finish watching that with dry eyes.

1: Sometime this weekend, I'll watch "The Natural" which is one of my all time favorite movies.

2: I'll wear as much black and silver come Monday.

3: Crank up Farmio and DJ while delivering, especially when the Thunderstuck starts.

4: Get home, and if its a White Sox winner; I'll watch the game on the DVR!!

;)

LET'S GO WHITE SOX!!!!!

I suppose my ritual is to gt overly excited about games in which I have no stake (Braves Phillies Sunday night) and to watch as much baseball, and baseball coverage as possible during the first week of the season.

Can't wait for Sunday night!

I usually try and play hooky from work to watch the game, but not gonna happen this year. So I'll be DVR'ing it and watching it at 5... And probably avoiding WSI most of the day.

Last few years I've got up early, load up the trunk of the car with tailgate supplies, pick up the brothers and friend about 7:30, drive to the Park and Ride and drop the car, jump on the L and head off to breakfast near Roosevelt and State. Pick up more supplies at the "Jewels" over by there, back at the car by 10:30, head into the park by 12:30, after first paying homage to the old Sycamore tree on 35th.

This year I'm adding Coop at the Cork on Sunday night to the routine.

Makes me sad I don't live in Chicago. :(

I don't have one. I have my day, then come game time, I sit down and watch it.

1. Nice dinner Sunday night.

2. Burn a new WS CD for the season.

3. Make an Opening Day Tailgate Menu.

I play the song Centerfield quite a few times during the day then sit down to enjoy the game.

Last year was awesome with the road trip (Civil Rights game in Memphis, Opener in Cleveland, home opener in Chi), but this year will be a little more tame. Patients will be watching the game overhead on the TV screen whether they like it or not.

I play Centerfield by John Fogerty, then Willie, Mickey and the Duke and since 2006, the opening scoreboard montage that the Sox use before every home game.

Then the friends, coaches etc come over and we watch baseball all day long!

I don't really have a ritual, I usually spend the 2 weeks before opening day going spastic waiting for the first pitch :D:

EDIT: I remember one I do, every spring, I buy a new Sox hat! nothing fancy, just the plain black with the white "Sox"

I have watched the '05 world series DVD for the second time in the past 3 days. I believe that can be a ritual, but I am positive that I have seen that thing at least 15- 20 times since I have gotten it. My parents (Cubs fans) think I am crazy- but I assure them that it is just part of the love.

Sigh, let's win another one folks. Let's win another one for Chicago!

Let's go White Sox!!!!!!!!

actually, I do have a baseball ritual:

I'll wear a New Era team fitted cap until the team makes the playoffs, once they do I retire the cap and buy a new one New Years day of the following year, and wear that cap every game until they make the playoffs again.

Ditch school, pick up a parking pass from a friend's Grandma who lives two blocks from the Cell on Wells, find a parking spot on the street, go to the Pregame Patio Party in right field 1.5 hours before gametime!

I fly my Sox flag in front of the home for the first week of the season. I also wear a Sox shirt, or a jersey every day of opening week.

I never had a special routine for opening day, just for the first week as a whole.

I wear my whitesox boxers (only worn on my wedding day and opening days)
I go out for breakfast and get a haircut
put the car flag on the car
pick my son up from school at 11am (doctor's appointment)
1130am the family and I head to the ball park
after the game we go out for dinner on Taylor St

I have always gone out for breakfast and got a haircut on opening day since I can remember, but this will be the 2nd year for the other 'rituals'.

Bust out the mink oil for the ol' glove while watching the Sunday night game. [When the Sox start on the road, I'll oil it up while watching that game]. Makes the whole house smell like a ballpark...

Field of Dreams, Bull Durham, Eight Men Out, and The Natural - the day before opening day. Find and set up BASEBALL related stuff - glove, ball, Sox hat - near the main TV. Wear one of my many Sox shirts to work. Call all Sox fans in my family and wish them a happy new year. One thing I NEVER do. Watch ESPN prognostihaters before season opener.

I should STOP doing that. I don't think they have done anything right in a long time.

The Cubs will win it this year though, they promise!

Yep, just wear it forward or to the left. I wore it on the start of 2005 and done it ever since.
