View Full Version : With Opening Day Almost Here, How Many Wins For The 2009 White Sox?

A couple of nights before Christmas 2008 I began this thread (http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=108470) and asked you folks how many wins would our 2009 White Sox have as they were constructed at the time. At that time, I projected the important parts of roster to look like this:

C - AJ Pierzynski
1B - Paul Konerko
2B - Chris Getz (according to Ozzie)
SS - Alexei Ramirez
3B - Josh Fields (according to Ozzie)
LF - Carlos Quentin
CF - Jerry Owens (according to Ozzie)
RF - Jermaine Dye
DH - Jim Thome

Starting Rotation:
Mark Buehrle
Gavin Floyd
John Danks
Clayton Richard (according to reports/speculation)
Lance Broadway/Jeff Marquez/Aaron Poreda (according to reports/speculation)

After 199 votes, a large number of you (79 votes, 39.7%) predicted 81-85 wins. There were 54 of you (27.14%) who thought they'd win 86-90 games. In third was the prediction of less than 81 wins which garnered 48 votes (24.12%). Finally, just over 9% of the voters (18 of you) dreamed big and predicted over 91 wins. Putting together some of this info, close to 64% (127) of you had the Sox winning 85 games or less which we can safely assume also means missing the playoffs.

Now we know that Getz and Fields have been penciled in at their respective positions while Owens will most likely not even make the roster. Instead, it looks like Ozzie will start Brian Anderson in CF and have him leading off against lefties. Some have speculated that DeWayne Wise will start against righties with Getz leading off. That remains to be seen. The rotation, however, now looks completely different with Jose Contreras' miraclous recovery and Bartolo Colon's signing. Here is what the 2009 White Sox look like just over a week before Opening Day:

C - AJ Pierzynski
1B - Paul Konerko
2B - Chris Getz
SS - Alexei Ramirez
3B - Josh Fields
LF - Carlos Quentin
CF - Brian Anderson vs LHP/Dewayne Wise vs RHP (2nd part assumed)
RF - Jermaine Dye
DH - Jim Thome

Starting Rotation:
Mark Buehrle
Gavin Floyd
John Danks
Jose Contreras
Bartolo Colon/Clayton Richard

Like I said I would back in December, I ask you now WSI Nation, how many games will your 2009 White Sox win?

Me personally, I went from "Fewer Than 81 Wins" back in December to "Between 86-90 Wins" today mainly because of the changes in our starting rotation.

Regardless of the teams situation, Im always optimistic, 90-95 for me!

I'd never predict a sub - .500 season no matter how bad things looked, but things look better now than when I was staring at two rookies in the rotation.

I went with 86-90

I think that with a few lucky breaks and everyone performing up to level, 86-90 wins is not out of the realm of possibility. But, I think 81-85 wins is far more realistic.

I feel optimistic: 80-82. Though I will be completely unsurprised if the win total is in the 70's.

I'm feeling better about the season because I don't think the divsion is as good as I first thought. There's no reason why the Sox can't be in the middle of the race all year. The Royals and Twins may end up being the biggest pains in the butt.

Around 10 days ago, Vegas placed the Sox over/under at 78. Parimutuel betting effects that number, for sure, but 78 seems quite low to me.

I am really hoping for between 86-90 wins this season.

I've been having nightmares about the return of corspeball (2007). I fear this is a real possibility but I hope I'm wrong. If the Sox can score runs and play good defense, they will probably get 86-90 wins.

The White Sox will surprise the experts again, but not me: 91-95 wins.

The Sox really haven't lossed THAT much.

before
Crede - Error machine and broke a lot of the season
Cabrera - Not many negatives, but I trust Getz
Uribe - Come on, defense wont make us lose 20 more games
Vazquez - We wanted Richard to replace him anyway
Griffey - Only as good as Anderson with bad defense
Swisher - sucked

now
Fields - Quicker, may get even less errors than Crede and just as good offense
Getz - Can be the same player without the gold glove
Betemit - ST, nuff said. just bad defense.
Richard - showed he can play
Anderson/Wise - Better than Griffy overall, and a higher batting average than Swisher! :D:
Contreras is back! And Colon is here too

With all that said.... I say the Sox are actually better! 91-95

This team looks about 2 games better than last year - 91 wins

88 to 90 wins may do it.Hell in the A.L. Central,
84 or 85 victories may win the division.

I voted for 86-90.

91-95

Not seeing a slump from Floyd or Danks based on what they have seen this spring.

Ramirez looks well suited for SS.

Fields looks as if he will be steady, if not spectacular.

Getz has looked solid.

Konerko's bat looks to be back.

CF continues to be a blackhole, and the bottom of the rotation remains a question mark, IMO.

But I've got faith

I say 81-85, but this team always does good when I don't expect them too.

I assume you're just referring to last season. He did have a ton of errors then. However if you're referring to his career with the Sox, then :?:

My thoughts were between 86-90 wins. I'm being really optimistic at this point. I hope that the 2009 version of the White Sox prove me right.:)

I voted 81-85.

Too many question marks on the pitching staff: Contreras, Colon, Linebrink and Dotel...we'll be lucky if 2 stay healthy the entire season. + the "Macdougal factor"...we'll end up relying on at least 2-3 arms from the minors and I don't think we have the depth to handle it.

Not a good sign when Wise (a 5th OF on a good team) is our starting CF and lead off guy. I think this is the year Thome starts to really tail off.

Upsides are: full season of Ramirez and Quentin, a little more mobility thanks to Getz and Fields, hopefully a rebound season from Konerko, and Danks takes it up another notch.

I think they can hang in there with Minn and Cle thanks to their holes in their rosters and injuries, but we need alot of breaks to go our way for us to repeat 2008. On offense we've replaced Cabrera with Getz, in the rotation, we've replaced Vazquez with Colon.

This sums up my opinion. I also think everything relys on the 'pen, like the past 3 seasons, and if we have a VERY good pen, we have a chance to win 90+.

I am going to say 86-88 this year, but still 3rd in the division. See my predictions at the top of this forum. I just have a hunch that there are going to be 2 teams with better records in the division. Cleveland is going to be one of the them.

Sox starters and power will get about 87 this year.

The Vegas line for over/under number of Sox wins is 78. As of now, 4% of poll is under 81. That means at least 96% are saying over 78 wins. If everyone here would pool their money and then put their money where their mouth is, This message board may own their own casino.
