Is it just me, or do you find it ironic that the article in today's Sun-Times, which details Don Cooper's greatest reclamation projects, features a picture of coop with......Mike MacDougal?????
I would have to guess that outside of perhaps Todd Rotchie (I'm pretty sure his era was during Coop's reign), he may be the biggest riches to rags story (pitching-wise) that we've had here during Coop's tenure.

Ritchie was under pitching coach Nardi Contreras, who was here 98-02 before both were shown the door. MacDougal isn't quite a rag to riches story, but Cooper is a very good pitching coach evidenced with the coined term for him here on WSI that's been used several thousand times.

Actually, I stand corrected. Contreras was fired in the middle of '02 when Coop took over. Not that that really mattered in Ritchie's case.

He ruined MacDougal so that he could fix 'em.

Mac was hardly a complete pitcher by any means. The guy had some sucess on a ****ty team and that was about it.

MacDougal was pretty impressive in admittedly limited time with the Sox in 2006. It's too bad he couldn't recapture that in 2007 or 2008.

Mike MacDougal was actually drafted in the 1st round so he had great potential at one point.

I remember hating Nardi Contreras so much. Seemed like anyone he left the mound after a conference, the next pitch was gone.

I think coop's best work lies with Garland.

So who was liable for the great Danny Wright? I think it was Nardi right?

His arm just fell apart. He had some of the most amazing stuff when he first came up, but his body couldn't handle the stress. Not sure that's Nardi or Coop, just sometimes the way things go...

How dare you not blame management for something that went wrong...
