Really it has nothing to do with the recession. Howard was going to make either $14 or $18 million next year anyway. It's a fair deal for both sides and avoids a nasty arbitration hearing for the next couple of years.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Howard traded to an AL team before he reaches free agency.

Agreed. Howard seems destined for the designated hitter sooner or later.

Go back and re-read the story. He's going to make $15 million next year.
I'd say the $1 million difference is chump-change when you consider they locked up a happy Ryan Howard and have rights to trade him at the deadline in a couple of years for a decent return.
