View Full Version : New Out-Of-Town Scoreboard

During SoxFest, Brooks said there will be a brand new out-of-town scoreboard ready for the 2009 season. I was shocked to hear because I never saw any work being done over there and my windows face RF/RCF. Today at school, iI walked up the back stairs and saw a tall crane in RF so I am guessing it is started. I will update this thread. Also, if anybody wanted a picture, the Obama banner on 35th/Wentworth has been taken down ( :(: ) I wish they kept it up this entire season. Especially considering Obama may throw out the 1st pitch. Hopefully they will put it back up.

Any idea if the new board will show out of town games inning by inning?

Thanks for the update! It'll be nice to finally have a detailed idea of what is going on in other games. The guy who sits behind me has a Blackberry and would constantly refresh it for updates on games of meaning; but, having it right there without him having to refresh his phone will be great.

I wonder how this thing is going to look when all is said and done. The one in St. Louis is decent, but only details 4 games while it just lists the other games' scores. They take down the scores and use it for advertising and other purposes between half innings. I'd hope it would be even bigger than that.

Has anyone heard of what they'll be doing about the scoreboard in LF? I hate that part of it is cut off from my view in 149 due to the Fundamentals Deck.

Years from now I'll probably miss those tense 20 minute intervals between the top and bottom of the 8th inning of a Cleveland game in one of those nostalagic ways...

You're probably right, but ads are not a big part of revenue in the grand scheme of things.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say the old scoreboard was manually updated. That would mean a new, up-to-date scoreboard would have to be put in, unless they want to hire someone to do all that updating (pain in the ass).

Today I was at The Cell and I saw the board. Not complete but I can tell you there are NO individual boxes for each games score and pitchers #'s. It's one huge screen (Like a movie theater screen). Then, the White Sox will put the info up from the video control room up there. Much more room because if you remember the other one was green (Pre-2008 blue) and it had little boxes around the green area. This is 100% video screen. Also, the Bank of America sign is still up.

VERY true. This a concern for me as well. I did not mind the other one except for the fact that it would stay the same for 2-3 innings! I care more about that than the extra info. What's the point if its up too slow anyway?

You'd think The Sox could capitalize on this, considering the name of the stadium. They could have a giant Cell Phone with the latest scores on it sponsored by US Cellular.

Why update the technology if you're still going to have someone manually update it? I highly doubt someone is going to be manually updating balls and strikes for each game. That is tedious work, and quite frankly a waste of time (and money) when it can be automatically updated with today's technology.

I'm sure they will have some MLB feed and software installed to make automatic updates. They can then manually turn off the display and run ads based on the on-field action and inning changes (commercials).

I trust they will make the right decision on this and I'm sure Brooks has provided input.

The Tribune has a story that basically just confirms what we know at http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2009/02/white-sox-add-new-scoreboard-at-us-cellular.html

They say it's like one at Tropicana Field, but I'm having trouble finding pictures of that anywhere. The one ones I can find showing out of town scores don't have diamonds or batter and pitcher listings, like the article says our new one will. Anybody have any idea what he's talking about? (And, yes, I know lots of other ballparks have ones like that, and I know what they look like, I'm just curious why Tropicana specifically was mentioned)

Yeah, a bit more research shows that it's a ribbon board in left. Odd thing is, I can't find a single picture showing it with current games going on - in most online, it's ads or info. The one I found with scores (http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1186/543558621_01b07499a4_o.jpg (http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1186/543558621_01b07499a4_o.jpg)) had scores from "Yesterday", so it doesn't show anything current. Hmm.

That's before a game, if there are not current games they're not going to show it surely? It might have changed just after that to show scheduled games maybe?

From the sounds of it, the board might be like the one they have at Chase Field but wider.

Right, I got that, it was just frustrating to me that I couldn't find one.

Looking on the web, every out-of-town scoreboard either has more or less (most less) info than ours is supposed to have, so it's hard to figure out the exact setup. Eh, I guess we'll find out in April.

I'm pretty certain when they mentioned that it was similar to what's used at Tropicana Field, that he was refering to the main LED video screen, which is a 35 x 64 Daktronics LED video board, which would sort of match the dimensions of the space that is taken by the OOT scoreboard.

You know, that makes a lot of sense, but if that is the case it seems a waste to use it for OOT scores, since it would be a better board then the current board with the lineups and line score and stats. If they are indeed doing this, I'd hope that maybe they switch the OOT scores to the current board in left.

I kinda disagree. You know a new full color LED scoreboard will be utilized to its fullest extent and it could be more as a OOT then a lineup/scoring board. There's going to be times where that board will display other quick things and sort of add to the main video screen. I'd rather have an out of town board do all that and full screen than let a lineup board do that. If there's something that should always be displayed it should be our scores and lineups.

I will assume that that the White Sox board will be designed by White Way out of Mt Prospect as they have been the WS and Bulls vendor for decades.

My biggest beef with White Way boards is as a tv truck tech they are hard to sync the game clock with the graphics machines we use and sometimes we are forced to use a mall camera to shoot the clocks.

Daktronics interface is flawless for Chyron clock interface, simply plug and play.

White Way has a good video partner with Mitsubishi (Diamond Vision) but Daktronics just makes a better overall product.

The Red Sox are torn on this issue. On one hand they would like an instant update for out of town scores but there is the tradition of the old board in left. Part of the fun of scoreboard watching would be to see a number pulled down and wait for the new figure to clank in. But now half the ballpark is looking at their phones for updates.

Daktronics got the Yankees contract. I would not judge it by what it looks like now as it isn't fully installed.

I have yet to see a bad Daktronics board. Harvard and BU just got new boards for college hockey and they are fine. The board at Triple A Pawtucket is 10 years old and still looks new.

If you go to daktronics.com they have a detailed pdf file on the Yankees contract. Gives the specs and everything.

The Reuters story looks suspect just from the date.

Mitsubishi Diamond Vision boards are good. The old Foxboro Stadium had the third one built and it looked fine 20 years later.

The Pats then sold it to a team in Mexico

Mitsubishi also has the contract for the biggest video screen ever at the new Cowboys Stadium.
