Varitek signs with Boston 5 million for 2009, club option for 5 million in 2010 or player option of 3 million.

Not bad for a .220 hitter

I'm glad to see they worked it out. Varitek is worth more to Boston than he is to any other team. He seems like a great teammate.

For that money why didn't the WHite sox take a look at this guy! What the Hell KENNY we still need a back up Catcher!

I just hope if he is hitting .220 again he doesn't make the all star team....

Are you sure this isn't an episode of Punk'd?

well he was worth about 5.6 million dollars last season and most projections see him rebounding to an awful (but livable) .700 OPS, so I think the Red Sox did very well here. For value, this isn't a bad deal.

Unfortunately for the Red Sox, they need a young catcher- but then again that could be said of every team outside of LA, LAAA, Texas, Minny, Baltimore or Atlanta right now.

This is the weakest group of catchers I've ever seen. Really, beyond McCann, Martin, and Wieters who's likely to post an OPS+ at 100 and not kill you on defense?

That's a great deal for an all star.
