MLB Article (http://texas.rangers.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090123&content_id=3766594&vkey=news_tex&fext=.jsp&c_id=tex)

Oddly enough, they don't have any pictures up yet. (Or perhaps I can't find them.)

I found these though:

Feel free to post more if any are found.

The red one is obviously new, but didn't they already wear a jersey like the blue one?

They're going back to their old jerseys. I remember the Rangers had a more reddish look in the 90s. I think they look better with blue tbh.

Why is the red jersey also with white pants? I thought the road jersey's used your city name, not home jerseys?

Uhhh that reminds me of the Anaheim, Arizona and Washington jerseys.

I think the blue one is the new alternate home/road jersey as stated.

I suppose the changes are small and subtle; similar to the changes in the Orioles jerseys a few months ago.

It's probably an alternate jersey that they'll wear at home and on the road (think, black Sox top). That said, the home & team name/road & city name rule isn't universal.

All the designs (except the batting helmets, which are appearently two-tone blue and red) are on this PDF: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/img/01-09/0124uniforms.pdf

Why would a team wear their city/state name on their home unis? Also, they went to the red in the early/mid 1990's it looks like this time they're going to do both. (they'll be using the red as an alternate.)

After the way Showalter had his pitchers beaning guys for years, you wouldn't think it would be smart to put red on your batting helmets. Next, they should put a bullseye on the side of the jerseys/pants.

I'm tired after watching that video. OK, they now have 5 different uniforms to wear; 2 on the road and 3 at home. The red hat/shirt will only be worn at home and they now have black trim/shoes for all uniforms.

I agree that it seems as though this franchise cannot decide on blue or red, however it seems they have now reached a middle point and can now sell to fans of the red unis and fans of the blue unis.

I agree the helmets look like something my 8 year old would wear in his little league and I hope it doesn't become a trend. I think the Mets also have similar metallic, multi-color helmets.

There was also an interesting article in the WSJ today about the success some NFL teams have had after changing their logo. They referenced the Tampa Bay Bucaneers, Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, New England Patriots and the Arizona Cardinals. (I didn't realize Arizona has a new/meaner looking Cardinal). From MLB, we can certainly add the Tampa Bay Rays to the list. Perhaps the Scrubs should consider it.

Only 2 at home (white and red) and 2 on the road (grey and blue), the 5th is a BP. The odd part is that all 4 are exactly the same design except for color.

The Mets have had multi-colored batting helmets for a few years, but in a blended way (and with less different colors) that looks way less horrible...

Even without that crappy two-tone look, I hate the new helmets that have indentations and extra vents. I don't care if the new ones are more comfortable, the old ones will always look cooler.

I wonder if the fans wanted the red unis back.

There is a sizable contingent of Rangers fans who long for the days of the red-trimmed uniforms because those were the glory days, when the Rangers were winning the AL West and getting swept by the Yankees in the first round of the playoffs.

Actually I think the late-90s uniforms looked better. There's no reason why they can't or shouldn't use red AND blue in addition to white. They call themselves the TEXAS Rangers and Texas' Lone Star state flag is red, blue and white.

I don't mind the new style of batting helmets, but I hate the new Rangers' two-tone paint scheme on it.

Call me new-school, but I don't think using the Sox's old uniforms as a precident for acceptable uniform trends is viable. Those uniforms were terrible as well.

They indicated that the blue alternate jersey will be worn both home and away. The red alternate jersey will only be worn at home so that gives them 5 possible uniform combinations. Home - White/White, Red/White, Blue/White. Road - Grey/Grey and Blue/Grey.

Well, there're plenty of uniforms that have reverted to more classic looks in the last few years too:

Philly (love their alt jersey)
Nationals (script Washington on away jerseys)
Arizona (not a huge jump but better than purple, jade and bronze)
Dodgers -- away jerseys
Tampa Bay (much simpler, not that distinctive)
Orioles (minor ... but putting Baltimore on their away jerseys is an improvement)
Royals (took black out of their unis)

Blue and black is a bad combination.

Smart move by the Royals. Now only if the Blue Jays and Mets would follow suit.

This one bummed me out. I know a lot of people are down on purple, but at least it was unique (especially when you consider that Colorado has gone to wearing a lot of black). When they switched to red, they took on the look of several other teams in the NL. Plus, how many other teams have changed their unis and gone to a totally different color scheme? It's hard enough for expansion teams to build up any sense of tradition. Completely changing your colors after only 9 or 10 years makes that task even more difficult.

johnnyg83
01-29-2009, 01:53 PM
If they had done just purple and bronze I would be with you. But the teal/jade/turquoise seemed so trendy at the time, you knew the color scheme couldn't last. Too many combinations and then they added black too.

And I know Arizona does have legitimate claim on jade as a state color.

I'm surprised a team hasn't claimed maroon as it main color.

There's too many blue and red teams.
