Well, he is a right handed catcher and his defense is still slightly above average. Isn't that exactly what we've been looking for in a backup?

I am surprised Barry Bonds hasn't circulated around any rumor mills. If pudge can still get a go in it, why not Bonds?

i dunno, i just dont think pudge would want to backup.

I'm pretty sure that Pudge doesn't view himself as a backup though, that's the problem. If i'm wrong and he'd sign for cheap to back up AJ, then give him a contract, absolutley.

Sure, he could play 60-70 games and even DH a little if need be. AJ tends to wear away when he playes too much. He never had 500 AB's in a season until he came here.

If he was willing, and didn't expect starter's pay, he'd be just what we needed. Especially if Contreras, Colon, Floyd, and the rookies continue the recent team tradition of having no clue how to hold runners.

At least Pudge gives you a shot to slow the run-at-will opposition against White Sox staters not named Buehrle.

Pudge retired many years ago.

And he would be better than what we had backing up AJ the past three years.

Fisk? That would work.

I hate Rodriguez, but if he takes a cheap contract and doesn't mind backing-up, I have no problem with bringing him onboard.

He didn't retire, MLB just started cracking down on HGH and steroids

Wasn't Pudge basically splitting time in New York at the end of the season last year? Maybe he is used to it by now.

I'm sure AJ and Pudge would get along great while sharing.

He still throws out runners well, but there's a reason why. He is notorious for calling for pitches which give him a better chance to throw out the runner, not necessarily what will get the hitter out or what's best for the situation.

If he has come to the reality that he is a back up and how many games he'l play, then fine. If he thinks it's 1998, then no.

He's referring to Fisk.

I'm all for it, I just don't see it happening.

Well, he is the only person that I will acknowledge as Pudge.

If Ivan Rodriguez was willing to be a backup catcher and occasional DH and signed a reasonable contract, that would be great. The Sox would have the flexibility to sit either A.J. or Thome against a tough lefthander and play Rodriguez at catcher or DH. With his bat control, Rodriguez gives the Sox another option to lead off or bat second. Rodriguez also buys the Sox time to develop Tyler Flowers.

The Sox should give this some thought.

The Sox should give this some thought.Totally agree. He just has "would kick ass with the Sox" written all over him. However, when he says, "if you sign me, you'll hit the lotto", he's not in the mood to back up, IMO.

He's the only person any Sox fan should acknowledge with that nickname IMO.

Agree with you here. Only one Pudge in baseball as far as I'm concerned.

Free agents can be traded at the trading deadline so if we had a minor league catcher mlb ready by then we could trade pudge for more prospects. I'd say go for it.

Remember how he reacted when the Sox signed Toby Hall?

My grandmother has a cat named Pudge (in reference to Ivan) so I call him Fisky :D:

Do you know how much that limits your options in this day and age?

They do get along. I believe Ozzie partied with Ivan after they won the World Series in 2003.

Hasn't Ivan played some first base as well?

As a backup backstop, I would be quite pleased with I-Rod.

I think he'd be better as bench coach - someone with enough credibility and guts to stand up to Ozzie to prevent him from making a boneheaded decision.

I like the idea if he's willing to be a backup. But I guess I'll have to take back all those wonderful things I yelled at him after he went on that "slim fast" diet a few years ago with Detroit
