Yadel Martin sounds like a really good pitcher.

Use a little creativity. The poster is just saying since we're 3 for 3 in the Cuban lottery, that we could be strong favorites to land them. He's not saying they are already on their team, but they might be with our past successes....

Will they be represented by the same agent as Jose and Alexei? If so, I think we have a good shot at probably one of them. Maybe more, though. There is no reason to think Kenny couldn't get them if he wanted to.

They are kinda old. 28 and 29 in Cuban math is like 35 and 36.

And since they can plan til they are about 57, they'll be fine .

But on a serious note, if they JUST defected, is it reasonable that they would be ready for the '09 season? Don't they have to get their living situations in order and all that paperwork, etc, out of the way before they can be eligible for the bigs? I thought I heard that process took a while for Viciedo....

Jose Contreras was 33 when first played in MLB and he lasted half a decade.

How long did it take for Viciedo, though? Seems to me if they were signed now, that everything could be done my March. I guess it just depends on how fast the Dominican Republic moves on these matters.

But was actually good for what, a year/a year and a half?

I don't think the question is "ready" as much as "available." As another poster pointed out, it took about a year for Dayan to become available to MLB teams. They first have to be declared free agents by MLB. Then they have to be told to stay away from Borass......

Hopefully neither of them are from that movie The Benchwarmers:

Yeah. I was thinking of ready and available as synonyms there.

Wouldn't mind taking a look at the guys, Alexei and Viciedo probably know if they're worth getting at this point.

The pitcher, Martin is a pretty small guy: 5' 10" and weighs 160lbs. It says that he throws his FB 87-90 with control and complements with sinker, slider, curve.

Yasser Gomez sounds really interesting...a high average OF with speed. Sounds like a perfect fit for what we need. Plus...his first name would make for great message board fodder. Did we sign him? Yasser!!!

Lets hope we have a good shot at both of these guys. Viciedo left Cuba in May and was declared a FA in November, so 5 months looks to be the minimum time. All these guys have to do "paperwork" to establish third-country residency (in DR) and go through the "unblocking" process, a procedure aimed at preventing Cubans from funneling money back to Raoul Castro’s government.

Well, I sure as hell wouldn't mind taking a chance on them if the price is right.

I'm expecting the president elect to declare that they are American Citizens on January 20th and quickly set them up with housing on the southside... we have higher powers we can rely on now people!

If they fit the mold, and if KW can work his Cuban magic, then why not.

A righty pitcher and a speedy outfielder have defected from Cuba according to ESPN.com. Any chance Kenny takes a look at these two?
