A former Cub but a lot more familiar with the Houston Astros organization.
Apparently it was a heart attack.

His 563 outings with the Astros is tops on the club's list, and his 199 saves ranks second.

The dude was absolutely stellar with the Astros, and had one crappy year with the Cubs and he's a "former Cub". Geez I hate the media... and it's not just the local guys either.

Thanks for the great memories, Dave. R.I.P.

Way too young to go. I liked the guy a lot. Those Astro teams were pretty darn good. RIP.

I agree.

When I think of him, I think of former Astro. And I think most people do.

He was a solid reliever at a time when closers were not as common-place as today, or were a part of a committee of two or three co-closers. He became a high-save closer later in his career, and was good. He had ice-water flowing in his veins and used the cavernous AstroDome to his advantage.

I remember when CHC signed him. They (the so-called fans) turned on him after a decent start. That was the year when all of big FA's the cubs signed stunk, like Danny Jackson and George 'A Shell OF His Former Self' Bell.

Smith was one of the last true free-spirits of that era that was all business (ala Dave LaPoint) when it was showtime.

It was. Dorus took a lot of pics at Wrighley or Comiskey for the 1981 set.
