Indians signed RHP Kerry Wood, who had been with the Cubs, to a two-year, $20.5 million contract with a vesting option for 2011.
Wood gets $10 million next year and $10.5 million in 2010. The $11 million option would vest if Wood has 55 games finished in either of the next two years. With Wood in the closer's role, the Indians are now looking at Jensen Lewis and Rafael Perez as setup men. Rafael Betancourt, Joe Smith and Masa Kobayashi would also seem to be locks for jobs, but perhaps Betancourt could be traded.

That is a LOT of money for a closer, who is injury prone.

Wood has spent a considerable amount of time on the DL in the past. He was relatively healthy last season, so maybe he has turned the corner. Who knows? What I'm wondering is what is Jenks going to be asking for after seeing this and the Krod deals?

For some reason the K-Rod deal didn't exactly cause me to go "whoa!" as he has been a dominant closer for a long time, but this was Kerry's only year as a closer and granted he looked good at times he also looked shakey, so i'm a bit surprised he got THAT much money especially in this economy. But I guess that's just the going rate of a closer and since it's only for two years it's not so bad.

Just like the Sox last offseason, it looks like the Indians need to overpay to try and form a good bullpen.

Best free agent closer on the free agent market in my opinion. Good move.

Isn't there an Ex-Rockies closer still on the market?

Definitely an improvement over previous closers for them - but I don't think this was a great use of 10mm. Feels like too much for all his risks.

Yes - but Fuentes is most likely going to take K-Rod's job.
