Ramon Hernandez to the Reds for Ryan Freel and a couple other minor leaguers. This clears the way for Roberts and Freel to come to the Sox!

Well the hang up with acquiring Dye in the first place was taking on his salary and now they have added 5 million with Hernandez. So that would be how they are related.

Freel makes 4 million. Hernandez makes 8 million. BAL is throwing in at least 2 million, possibly 3 million.

So I HIGHLY doubt the addition of 1-2 million dollars would prevent them from pursuing Dye if they really want him.

If they give Dusty the team he wants, most likely Dye or someone with power will be acquired.

They just made a team pay 6 million out of the 8 million what are they going to ask for to get dye?

This was rumored to happen with or without Dye a few days ago. Im surprised Rockabilly was not all over this one when it was rumored. The Reds needed a catcher.

Dye >>>>>>>> Hernandez, so not that much, if any. They don't have any other choice. Either they sign a Burrell or Dunn and are stuck with a long term contract and alot of $$ per year, or sign a reject like Baldelli or Rivera. Dye on a 1 (or 2) year contract is an ideal situation for them.

They have supposedly been inches away from a deal a few times already. I doubt them having 1-2 million more on their payroll (when you claimed they had 5 million more on their payroll) is going to change the structure of the deal they had in place with us. If they want Dye, they'll get him. If they want 5 million thrown in with Dye, it won't happen. The bottom line is: this deal had no impact on whether Dye goes there or not.

Yeah I didnt realize Freel made 4 million. But both Dusty and Jocketty have already said money was a big issue with the Dye trade.
And why do they have to sign Burrell or Dunn if they dont get Dye?

Right, $$ was going to be a problem regardless. It's not like before they could afford it, but now they can't. There's a huge difference between saying them adding 1-2 million in payroll might make this deal a tad more challenging, and saying this ends the Dye to CIN trade completely.

I have to disagree... if anything it makes a trade more likely. if the reds were so concerned about money they could have just gone with Hanigan at C and save a few million... instead they go out and aquire a proven vet in Hernandez (a win now kind of move)... adding Dye to the team gives them a very good lineup while only having to give up Bailey (who has struggled in the majors) and a few prospects

ok... maybe im getting way ahead of myself and i will admit i know zero about tyler flowers. but with his acquistion, and although he is 2 years or so away, im going to ask you guys who may know the situation and consequences better than i: should we have traded to deal AJ to the reds for freel? i was going to post it the other day but i couldnt think of a good way or a good player for us to then acquire and to start.

i just see freel as a cheap, short term solution at 2nd and as our leadoff man.

Other than Freel can't play 2nd base, is not cheap and is injured all the time.
