Do you have a link to the story? I looked at Foxsports, ESPN, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun Times, and Googled looking for the story. Nothing came up.

People involved with American baseball are often targeted by criminals who want their money. They're seen as big dollar signs that can be blackmailed, held hostage, or lured into doing something that they can be sued over.

There's a theory that the guy who Uribe allegedly shot tried to set it up as a way of blackmailing money out of Juan; pay me or I go to the police, etc.

Venezuela is a very unstable country. I don't want to turn this thread political, so no in-depth discussion of the reasons for that; but a friend of mine who sold software and systems to companies in South America for several years told me that in Venezuela, you can expect to be robbed, so you learn what to look for -- like you don't get into a cab that has anyone other than the driver in it, etc. Even so, the cab driver often drives you into a holdup situation and he gets a cut of the take.

Point is, there isn't much civil law as we know it, or enforcement of that. Have a look at the US State Department's website, which advises that:

I haven't read the linked story yet, but crime is a fact of life in Venezuela in recent years. :( Very sorry to hear that Aparicio's grandson lost his life.

My family is from South America, and there are so many problems. The US is far from perfect in this regard, but it has some basic levels of fairness in the social system that creates a lot of good things.

Compared to other countries, at least.

This is very sad news, indeed. With the price of oil plunging, that country could be looking a more of this upheaval on a grand scale.

I know that Ozzie said his family in venz. is careful...hope so...this is scary stuff.

Very sad indeed. It surprises me that he and his family still live there with how much violence has become a part of everyday life. Very, very sad for him and his family....
