Apparently he's available. I know he is very wild but he does contain electric stuff. I wonder if we were to trade Jenks could he be an option to acquire and convert to a closer?

A closer that can't throw strikes won't work very well.

He's available because he'll be 28 in May and still hasn't shown any improvement.

It's kinda sad, but I think my natural reaction to any bad pitcher I see now, is Coop can fix'em.

That's why I said it. Everyone knows Coop can fix anyone. This year it's going to be Marquez.

He's a non-tender candidate. I wouldn't give up anything for him, but if the Sox really want him, all they may have to do is wait a week.

They were looking at him at the deadline. Control issues and he's latin, he definetly fits on the Sox.

If we don't have to give up anything for him, how can we pass him up?

There are plenty of players without teams every year. This question could apply to anybody.

I don't really trust him. He always has a losing record and his ERA is always above 4.50. Maybe it's because he's spent his career in Baltimore though?

I couldn't believe Chief Yahoo gave up on Jeremy Guthrie (I couldn't believe they put him on waivers, wouldn't he look fantastic as a 4-5?). Teams get sick of trying to fix their problems and it's likely people just need a change of coaches, scenery, ect. Look at Guthrie and Floyd. That said, I'd throw Broadway towards the Orioles to take a flier on Cabrera if our scouts see something.

Daniel Cabrera

2004 89 BB 76 K 5.00 ERA
2005 87 BB 157 K 4.52 ERA
2006 104 BB 157 K 4.72 ERA
2007 108 BB 166 K 5.55 ERA
2008 90 BB 95 K 5.25 ERA

I know he has played on some crap teams and has a lot of raw talent, but this guy just isn't any good. Baltimore has run him out there again and again hoping "it" will click for him and it hasn't. Now he's 28 and probably non-tendered? No thanks. If he's still unemployed by spring training and will take a minor league deal, then sure let him try out. But you know somebody will give him a guaranteed major league deal for a couple million. I'd rather keep our younger guys for a different trade or just to stick around. And as a closer? BARRRRRF.

Also, Cabrera has had Leo Mazzone there the last few years and still can't figure it out. If Mazzone can't straighten him out I would worry about his makeup....

MLB.com reports Cabrera's signed a one-year deal with Nationals (http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081220&content_id=3724286&vkey=hotstove2008&fext=.jsp), pending physical.

I don't know. I was a big Mazzone fan but word on him from a few friends of mine in Atlanta are he clashes with kids a lot. He works great with mid career and vets but sometimes kids don't take well to him (Kyle Davies in ATL)
