View Full Version : More WSI 10th Anniversary Fun... When & how did you find this place?

I like these stories, and we haven't had one of these threads in a while...

I found WSI in the off-season between the 1998 and 1999 season, IIRC. The first story I remember reading here was about Darrin Jackson replacing Wimpy in the booth. I checked periodically for a while, and didn't start posting until mid-season 2001, IIRC, days when we didn't have the snazzy vBulletin message board.

In the 2003 season I was mostly looking at whitesox.com but I hated all the stupid, mindless trolling that went on over there. I typed "White Sox" in the Yahoo! search bar and this place came up. I checked it out and joined pretty quickly.

I probably went back to the whitesox.com board maybe once or twice since. Can't say I miss it! :D:

I found it in the Fall of '03 when I was bored in the library at school. I Googled something Sox related and this was the first site that popped up.

I found WSI after that miserable 2007 season. Somewhere to feel the pain with fellow Sox fans and drown out the growing public hostility toward my team.

Great group of people. Great information. Even great rumors! And not to mention the tremendous job the mods do to keep trolls to a minimum! Wonderful place to come and hang out!

Kudos to all involved and here's to another 10 and more!

I joined in 2002, back during the Sox's dark era. As a longtime resident of the NW suburbs, I was getting sick of Cub fans telling me I was an idiot for pulling for the "Sux" and wanted a place where I could hang, as it were, with those of my kind. I did a search for "White Sox fan sites"; WSI came up as an early option and by the luck of the draw (never heard of WSI before), picked this site to check out. The rest, as they say, is history.

Yeah, the year between using Rivals prefab boards to when West finally got disgusted with freeware forums and bought a vB license. I think it was the Ikonboard version that shut itself off at random and all you got was a server error message when you tried to access the forum, I don't think West ever figured out what the code error was that caused that.

I was on the ESPN.com boards just before the start of the 2000 series, and some guys called JustJim35 () and DagoBeef (man, what happened to him?) turned me in WSI's direction. Believe that was in the midst of the Rivals days, because I remember the glory of the first post-Rivals incarnation.

Those early post-rivals days were fantastic. Listed under the names of all the members were any aliases that were being used by said member. That made things easy for the mods.

Although, as WSI progressed, we were treated to great moments such as the "cheese stick"/"turkey leg" pissing contest. All was not lost.

I used to talk White Sox stuff with a Sheriff Deputy who worked at Juvenile Court (he has since moved to a different courthouse). One day he asked if I had Internet access. He told me about WSI (but he is not registered here, go figure). I checked it out. Being an old person who went to college before the Internet was "invented," I had no idea how message boards worked or even what the heck they were. I kept clicking on the five most active threads on the homepage when, after several months of that and reading the articles, I figured out how to register.

The day I registered I was pissed off at Jerry Manuel, so I took out my anger in the form of my username. I guess I should sign up for anger management. I also wanted to call myself Voodoochile, but that name was already taken....

I found WSI in it's early stages searching the web on what ever search engine was popular 9-10 years ago. I remember playing on the web durring homeroom my senior year of highschool (1999) and always checking WSI. I loved the exlopding scoreboard on the main page. I think I wrote a page once for the site complaining about ticket and beer prices. I used to post a lot more, but I still check the site a lot. I remember trying to find other pages like WSI and never could. The Tribune used to have a message board for sox fans that was more popular than it is today....and I remember websites like Bill's sox page...etc

I moved to Denver the first weekend of October 2005. By mid-October, I was searching like crazy to find some fellow Denver Sox fans. I couldn't watch the World Series by myself - I needed the Sox camaraderie. After several searches, I found WSI. I've been on ever since; had never used a message board before and I now I'm completely obsessed. :D:

From 2001-2003 I used to post at the MLB.com forums. Then in October 2003 the forums got flooded with Cubbie trolls and I needed somewhere else to go. I had heard the words "White Sox Interactive" whispered before, so googled it and found this place.

I think I was googling pictures of Old Comiskey or something Old Comiskey related throughout 2006 and it took me to this site and as the Sox were imploding in 2006 I figured I should see what exactly these "message board" things were and if they were anything like the message boards that I used to go to on a guitar website (I think it's gone now). Anyhoo, I sorta roamed around until I created my own user name and my first post I believe was about potential White Sox steriod users that got Nellie very pissed off...

I remember back in late 2004, I was looking for a place to talk white sox baseball. I had just started to really get into the team, for a while I had just looked from afar at the Sox and said that I could like this team. In early to mid 2004 I really started watching and started really liking the team and paying attention. I asked a friend at school who's a diehard sox fan if he knew of a forum and he told me about this site. I joined the same week that the Sox signed Jermaine, and that's where the name came from. It seems I started following the team just at the right time .

I found the site around 2001. Lurked for a while then started posting as "jurr80". After a stint in the banned circuit over some lively Frank Thomas banter back in '03, I changed over to this name.

It's been an absolute blast on here. We've coped with some bad losses and celebrated some phenomenal moments together.

A friend of mine told me about the Armour Park article - how the park would've framed the skyline, etc. So, I googled it in 2004, found the website and read the article. Then, I clicked on every link off the front page - WS trivia (which I bombed at), the old Comiskey Park pic link, etc. I went into the message boards and was impressed that there wasn't trolls posting in every thread.

From what I remember, I'm here partly because of him too (and I believe he's still on whitesox.com under a different name - chitownhustler or something). When he was found out as not being a very truthful person, all the threads were deleted from whitesox.com pretty quickly. Wanting to know what happened, I was referred to a thread here. Some pretty excellent detective work - one of the funnier things I've witnessed on the net.

I was pretty sick of all the political nonsense and trolling on whitesox.com too, so I made the jump pretty quickly.

During the 2001-2002 offseason I was trying to find some Old Comiskey pics. Yahoo directed me here, after I saw the photo tour of the old park I started reading the message boards.

During that same time I was reading Dan H's book "Through Hope and Despair" and he mentioned WSI and George Bova so I started coming here.

Side story: I got my handle from the other book I had ordered from Amazon. "Veeck As In Wreck"

I remember it well... I Googled it. (Except Google didn't exist so I probably used Altavista or HotBot.)

1. Search "White Sox"... visit lame official site. Visit Bill's White Sox page. Visit email list site.

2. Wait a month. Search again. Visit same lame sites. Nothing's changed.

3. Repeat steps 1 & 2 for over a year, 1996-97.

4. Spend time in-between searching for "Arsenal" sites with much better success.

5. Finally get fed up with lame White Sox sites. Decide this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody's part.

6. Begin coding WSI the following Thanksgiving.

I can't quite remember how I came across WSI. I had been posting at the Sox newsgroup since the mid 1990's, so I may have heard of WSI there.

I remember meeting George at the WSI booth at 2002 Soxfest. I bought a book at the booth, and the author signed the book. The books pagination was screwed up and I got frustrated trying to read it so I tossed it out. The book didn't last but my ties to WSI continue.

How can I find my first post here?

September 2003 - our Sox missed out on October baseball again and I went a little nuts. Searched for "Sox fans," found WSI and registered immediately. In my first few weeks I created a jumper's thread moaning about how I wanted the Sox to win and then engaged in a battle with Mr. Liptak about whether or not JR should raise the payroll.

Shortly after my rough entry I found Fantasy Island and settled into relative obscurity on the forums, resurfacing every time Jjav829 posts an **OFFICIAL***Fantasy Baseball Draft Thread. Which should be popping up anytime now... :redneck

I was posting on the White Sox newsgroup ala DrCrawdad and the incomparable Voros McCracken in 2000-01. Joined here at the beginning of the '01 season. Haven't posted much since '05, but I am a regular visitor. I figured it was appropriate to save my 100th post for this 10 year toast. Btw, I may have been the one to mention WSI to Fenway, but he's such a web zealot I doubt I can take credit/blame for that

Took me a while to remember how I found this place back in early 05.
I used to post on the sox espn board and someone posted why are you people here White Sox Interactive is the only spot for sox talk.

and that was that.

I found this place back in 2000 when I did a yahoo search for "Chicago White Sox messageboard". I got a list of a few of them but, this was the best site by far. I was a longtime lurker until 2006 when the 2005 World Series Championship and the trade for Jim Thome finally made me say "what the heck" and sign up.

I had joined a facebook group for the whitesox and somebody posted about the site. The rest is history.

I remember every detail. I was in my school's computer lab, in 8th grade. As I was wont to do, I was looking up pictures of Sox-type things on google or yahoo or something like that. One of the results was from this website. I fell in love, joined, and immediately got involved in a thread about the Konerko-for-Cameron deal. My first post was in defense of Paulie, in a manner of speaking:
http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=10380

I think Cameron is a good ballplayer, but stats aren't always good when asking a question like this. If Cameron were playing at Comiskey, all would be different. If you were to change the slightest thing in history, it would start a chain reaction. For example, if Louis Go[n]zalez would have called time before the pitch that won the D-Backs the Series, he may have then popped up. You never know.
And Daver's response...
Welcome Aboard. :redneck
Here I am, 2,580 posts later, thankful to have been part of the WSI family for more than 6 of its ten years in existence!

WSI came up as a link during my Google search for Tadahito Iguchi when KW signed him. This is one of the reasons why Iguchi will always be near and dear to me.

Thanksgiving 2005 after Kenny traded Rowand for Thome. I was in full on White Sox clipping papers into a scrapbook for the WS and was so distressed that the team wouldn't stay as one that I needed a place to vent.

Memories of 10 years..... I have been glancing through this site for years and decided to search back to 2002-03. Voodoo became a mod. War began. It seemed like a all out board war. They didnt like all the bannings and the reasons for them, or just wanted to be complete jerkoffs,(IE nuke clevland, spiff, kempers, mike squires among others.) Then they just caused more! Any others remember this?

I actually enjoy doing this sometimes when I have the free time. I will go back and look at old Roadhouse crap. I know it means dredging up the past and old animosities, but it is sometimes fun to see the way that the Mods would tell you you're banned. LOL. Over the years I saw things from simple explanations to dissertations to "hey, I've got an idea.....two weeks!!" Absolutely love it.

Oh yes. Fun. But in late 2002 it was war! The hating on the mods, disrespecting them and hating the rules. Any mods have input?

I actually found this place looking for a better way to get tickets or get rid of my extras. As funny as that sounds, it is the best way that I could insure that my tix went to real Sox fans. I lllluuuurrrrkkkeeed for a long time, then finally I just decided to start posting and contributing my 2 cents on things I felt so strongly about. I have not looked back since I began my long strange journey here long ago.

This is the greatest, most influential Sox site on the web. As sad as this sounds, without the Sox site my winter would really suck without a place to belly up to the bar and discuss some important issues with our ballclub during the offseason. I appreciate each and every encounter that I have with other die hard and even casual Sox faithful.

Thank you for giving me a place to vent. I am sure that my girlfriend appreciates it too.

GO GO White Sox.....Interactive.

Well, not having been a member back then, I didn't experience all of that. All of garbage has no place here and things were taken care of. Things just have a way of working out and good people always make that happen. With the exception of a few hotbutton issues, things seem to be pretty peaceful.

I have enough garbage in my life, and WSI should not be when it is one of my, as told in Happy Gilmore "Happy Place".

I was merely stating the fact that I thought it was great how the Mods handled the mess.

I found WSI in December of 2005. My younger brother Hugh passed away very suddenly in November, and a friend forwarded me a thread where he was being discussed at some point. I think it was in conjunction with a thread about people who did not make it to see the White Sox win a World Series. I was so touched that I started poking around at some of the other discussion topics and a short time later I joined. I have to say this site has been extremely helpful durring some the Sox less than stellar moments. Helps me keep my head in the right place. Happy Anniversary!

I found it in early 2005, and I looked at it a lot during that season. I think I was in the Music Library at IU, as that was the summer that I had a really crappy apartment with no internet.

Even though I have been a huge Sox fan since 2000 or so, I never had been as involved and passionate as this previous year. Something about all the new talent, and competing when we really shouldn't have made me become a White Sox fanatic.

I live in a family of Cubs fans and listening to their talk about their team last year was too much, and I needed to read and write with passionate baseball fans just like me.

This board found me while I was searching White Sox forums on Google.
One of the best finds I have ever made.

There was this teacher at Whitney Young High School who introduced me to it back in 2005. He was one of the biggest Sox fan teachers there (although I never had him), and I was known as the #1 Sox fan at school.

I found this place in 2006, if I'm not mistaken. I came along, looking to take advantage of the web and find others who love the Sox. Actually, I think it was through a google hit.

A few mis-steps along the way in the early months, (I believe calling Hal "Tom" at one point during a heated discussion was one of my more bone-headed manuevers; with that topping my not-so-clear "I really was joking" moment about Steve Dahl; but I digress....) I figured I was not going to be around long on the board; but I've come to love this place; and have found some really genuine people here.

From some great moments (like my brother working on the remodel project at USCF) to some sad moments; you guys have been the best fans to laugh and cry and cheer and jeer with.

Because of WSI, I realized how great sports can be and how much of a fan I had become of not just the Sox but of athletics in general; especially when I have just written from the heart about it.

From my "sports glory" http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=1597095&postcount=53 post, to the "amusement park 2008" http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2078516&postcount=76 (http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2078516&postcount=76) post;

those moments I look back on and see "hey, that was pretty cool what I wrote!" I even loved writing about the 2007 season; with all its faults. We have had some great years since Ozzie took over the reins; and it only looks to get better.

I can't wait to finally make a WSI outing and meet some folks face to face.
