The Giants over-paid for an over the hill player. What else is new?

Finally, somebody signed.

Hopefully the lull is over.

I don't even think the Tigers were interested.

Not only because he's gone, but because they get the draft picks (sandwich and high 2nd) and weren't going to even offer arbitration.

Proves how stupid the Giants are. No wonder they suck.

How does Brian Sabean still have a job?! Unreal. I'd be furious if I was a Giants fan. :o:

Nine million. Nine million for an old Renteria. Hell, they could've had Uribe for a third of that, for a one-year deal.

Sweet! Now the Tigers can offer arbitration. Draft picks rule! Thanks Giants.

Good Riddance Edgar.

While I agree that it was stupid of the Giants to sign Renteria before the Tigers had to decide on arbitration, I like this signing for the Giants. Renteria has shown that he's clearly more comfortable playing in the NL. I expect him to hit at least .280 with a .340-.350 OBP next year. Plus, the contract is only for two years, so if he really has lost it (which I don't think he has), it's not like they're stuck with him for four or five years.

Also, to be fair, the Giants do get signifanctly younger at the position with this signing.

at least they're consistent

Looks like this is false, his agent is denying it.

In fairness to Edgar, I think he was out of his element in the AL. I wouldn't be surprised to see a slight increase in his production back in the senior circuit. Then again, who doesn't?

Bay Area papers say the Giants are interested in Renteria and/or Furcal, but no signings yet. Also read that the A's are showing interest in Furcal as well.

I saw this story and then a few almost immediate follow-ups that it was false and he hasn't signed. What is going on? I guess there was little reason to think the New York media would know what is going on the left coast.

FYI, the Tigers have officially declined an offer of arbitration to Renteria.

Good to hear they won't be getting 2 draft picks for Renteria since I'm assuming that Renteria-to-the-Giants deal ended up being false...

The signing was okay. But losing two picks (when this year would be a good picking slot for them) is sort of silly. Did they jump before the Tigers did not officially offer him arbitration?

I'd have rather had Jack Wilson. At least he can bend and pick up a grounder.....

Maybe this opens the door for SFG to trade us Emmanuel Burriss, the rookie they brought up last year to play SS when Vizquel was hitting .160. He could play 2B or SS, and has some wheels......

I used to like Renteria, and wished the Sox would get him prior to 2005. Then he played for the Red Sox, and I changed my mind.

Mine too. I can't believe that Brian Sabean has a job. Even in baseball, his incompetence is astounding. First Zito, then overpaying for Rowand, now this...

Definitely. The Giants would be way better off firing Sabean and installing Who Wants To Be A Millionaire-esque voting machines at all the seats in AT&T Park and just having fans vote on personnel moves.
