Has it really been ten years since George posted at the White Sox Mailing List that he was starting a new Sox web site? It's been a great ten years, and this is by far the best fan web site I've seen. I'm proud to have been associated with the site in one way or another for the past ten years, and with luck I'll still be around in ten more.

With luck I may also be back to writing a regular column here in the near future.

I still can't believe I didn't find out about the site until I saw a friend looking at it at Mizzou during the 05 season.

How many people have been aboard for all ten years?

Very few. TL is one of them but he's related to George, so it's kind of an unfair advantage. It's not possible to see based on join dates because of the various incarnations the board has gone through since this place popped into existence.

It took off in the summer of 2000 when a group of posters seeking refuge from a horrific troll who used computer generated attacks to shut down the ESPN Sox message board for hours at a time (AKA Supertroll) joined WSI. I can't recall who found the place but names that I remember being involved were IWriteCode, IAteCanada and FarWestChicago. The frabgeous part of it was that WSI had a moderator (PHG) who would boot out the trolls and could shut down registrations as necessary. About 50 of us came over the first month or so, IIRC and the rest as they say is Internet history...

PHG has commented before on the way he felt when he came here one night to find the place had "come alive" as he put it. Prior to the mass join, there were about 10 people who posted sporadically, but the majority of the conversation took place in a newsgroup format - TL can talk more about that.

8+ years for me and counting. I wouldn't trade this site for 20 ESPN's...

Voodoo - you were JustJim35 or something like that on the old ESPN boards, right? Supertroll made is presence known here too for a while, but it wasn't long until PHG and FWC figured out a way to get his ass canned for good. Those were the days, lol.

To all those that put in lots of hard work for this site - THANK YOU! I don't post here much anymore, but I read it a ton and it's where I get all my Sox info (and so much more).

Yep that was me. I only changed names originally because West was having a hard time getting my cable modem based connection/e-dress to register. It was a long week without my WSI. West said, "try reregistering with a new user name and e-dress" So I did and then I decided I liked the new user name so I kept it.

I remember you from the old boards...

I remember trolling the ESPN Cleveland board in repayment for Supertroll who was a toons fan. Late at night we'd hit with massive attacks. It was one of those toon posters who came up with the name Sox Army. Like true Chicagoans, given a nickname intended to insult, we embraced it. I remember the night SonnyBono (a self-proclaimed General) gave me a "promotion" to Lieutneant for absolutely pwning some toon poster. Of course this was before the term "pwn" came to be...

I joined in 2002, back during the Sox's dark era. As a longtime resident of the NW suburbs, I was getting sick of Cub fans telling me I was an idiot for pulling for the "Sux" and wanted a place where I could hang, as it were, with those of my kind. I did a search for "White Sox fan sites"; WSI came up as an early option and by the luck of the draw (never heard of WSI before), picked this site to check out. The rest, as they say, is history.

I made the right choice. Like others here, I want to thank PHG, West, Daver, Voodoo, TL, Michelle and the others who work hard to keep this site clean and intelligent!

Interesting article by PHG too.

This version launched in July, 2001 and I'm sure the post was West's or his alias, BoardGod.

Many boards came before this one. WSI had several boards at Rivals (2000-01) including one named "Sox Clubhouse" that pre-dates this board by over a full year. Those databases were lost when their servers were pulled.

But to answer your question... the very first board at White Sox Interactive was Pale Hose Pontifications, pre-dating even the Rivals message boards. I based it on Discus and launched it in December, 1999. I've attached the original WSI board header here...

http://www.flyingsock.com/george/board_logo.gif

I could probably dig around my old files to find the very first post, but I can tell you from memory it would have been mine while I monkeyed around with the board settings. I'm sure it was something witty like "Does this work?" or "Welcome Sox Fans!" or "Who loves churros?"

How long did the Rivals board last? I remember finding this place in 2000 around the time of the Cleveland-New York 7-0 road trip. I can't remember if WSI was on Rivals at that point or if it was an earlier incarnation.

Rivals' network of baseball sites launched prior to the 2000 season. WSI went live there in February as the White Sox site. WSI covered that roadtrip as Seven Glorious Days in June (http://whitesoxinteractive.com/2000DivisionChamps.htm). All that 2000 material was originally published at Rivals. (1999 and earlier was published at other host providers, too.)

I'm sure Rivals was around in 1999 and earlier, but primarily to cover college athletics and high school prospects. The one big exception was TeamOneBaseball, a baseball prospects report. This pre-dates the launch of Rivals' baseball network.
