How can an old catcher had an avg of 220.. It was shocking enough to see him as an all-star this past season but for him to be a type A free agent is pretty ridiculous..

All Red Sox players are automatically type A free agents. Didn't you know?

Hopefully, the Red Sawx are dumb enough to offer arbitration.

Because the rankings are based off the last 3 seasons, not just 2008 and over the last 3 season Varetek has been in the top half of catchers in the league.

It wouldnt be dumb at all. If he accepts the Sox get him back on a one year deal and it buys the Sox another year to figure out the position long term. If he declines and signs elsewhere they get draft picks.

When did they change from the last 2 years of stats to last 3?

$10M+ next year for Varitek is dumb.

Maybe it is two, but I thought for sure it was 3.

1/11-12 million isn't dumb at all when you think about the situation. They want him back but only on a 2 year deal. So if he accepts it's only a 1 year commitment to a guy who is important to their team. It gives guys in the minors another season to maybe show they can play. Maybe there are better catching free agents in 2010.

Theo and that Boston front office would love for Varitek to accept arb.

Varitek would be smart to accept arbitration if he's a type A and he's offered it. I don't see teams willing to sign him if it means they're losing a first rounder, or second rounder for those in the top 15. Teams are placing more and more value on top draft picks now.

Boras was already planting seeds that the he'd be a great fit for the Tigers. They just got rid of a catcher living on name only. If he is willing to accept a low salary (2-3 million) and a platoon situation then he'd probably be willing to just stay in Boston.

If you are curious, this guy (http://tigers-thoughts.blogspot.com/) worked on trying to crack the Elias system for FA. He's a regular contributor at our motown messag board and was featured in the Detroit Free Press. He's got his projections on the right hand side.
