My roomie here in Chapel Hill writes for our school newspaper, the Daily Tar Heel. I told him to write a column about the Cubs futility. He obliged and here is the result. what do you guys think?

Perhaps, as his roommate, you influenced his thinking a bit?
(not saying that's a bad thing)

Wonderful, wonderful article! I especially liked the part about what happened to them "meeting expectations" as opposed to being a "collapse."
Not as well-written as that article, but it's nice that this Cubs fan in ISU's Daily Vidette "gets it." http://media.www.dailyvidette.com/media/storage/paper420/news/2008/10/06/Sports/Three.And.Out.Cubs.Season.Is.Over-3470527.shtml

And they did, even after the refs almost gave the game away twice.
This article has nothing to do with journalism. I am never impressed by men and women who write for college and high school newspapers (or semi-weeklies in Kansas for that matter) who write about professional sports they have never covered. A sports column ripping the Cubs in a in a college newspaper in North Carolina is no more appropriate than a sports column in a high school newspaper in Iowa ripping the White Sox.
It may have made a good letter to the editor, though.
