View Full Version : Who are you pulling for now?

With the White Sox now gone who are you rooting for in the playoffs the rest of the way and why?

I'm torn between rooting for the Philies or the Dodgers. I'm a big Ryan Howard fan and I think their fans are deserving of a World Series crown. On the other side I'm a fan of Joe Torree and it'd be great to see him stick it to the Yankees with a win.

I don't want the Red Sox to win because they have become the Cubs of the AL. Cocky fans, annoying "RED SAWKS NATION" etc.

I don't want the Rays to win not because of the players but the fans of Florida don't deserve a world series. They didn't support them all year now all of a sudden everyone is on the bandwagon like they were there all along.

Overall though I think I'm going to go with the Philies.

Tampa and Philadelphia. TV ratings for Fox would be abysmal but the Tampa story is good for baseball.

It'll be tough to watch since the Sox are now out, but I'd like to see the (Devil) Rays and Phillies. Knock Boston out, screw ESPN, Fox and the rest of the networks. Then, yet another AL sweep in the WS.

1) Dodgers
2) Rays
3) Phillies
4) Red Sox

I spent 7 years in LA, and adopted the Dodgers as my NL team while I was there. Heck, even my wife is pulling for them now, and she doesn't give a hoot about baseball.

I'm going for Rays and Phils to get to the Series. Who I root for in the Series itself, depends on how annoying the fans down here get. Seriously, **** Rays "fans", I see Rays gear all the time on campus and all of it is brand new (2008 logos, Longoria number shirts, etc.)- where were you guys in April? Much less the last 10 years.... Florida is a football state, I'm not sure everyone in this state is aware they have major league teams.

That said, in spite of them beating us, I respect the Rays. They were a worthy opponent and I never heard anything about their players disrespecting the Sox or Chicago. Spending only $40 million and having mostly home-grown players has been tagged by the national media as a "feel good story" that actually is one.

The Phillies are the NL version of us. They've won one World Series in their history and it took them until 1980 to win one, yet they suffered in silence- I wasn't alive in 1980; but I'm guessing it wasn't like the disgusting media blitz treating Cubs and Red Sox fans like the greatest human beings alive who have suffered more than anyone.

As for the Red Sox and Dodgers. No. The Red Sox have the second worst fanbase in baseball and have won 2 World Series in the last 4 years. Screw them. The Dodgers have Manny and Torre and of course, Fox is hoping they can pull it off because Manny vs. the Red Sox is some sort of ratings bonanza.

Man, I really hope the Rays and Phils win....

Sort of feel the same way. I flipped the switch to "off season" mode on the train back home last night after the game.

I am intrigued at how a Boston / LA WS would play out, though, but not enough to root for anyone.

I have pretty much lost interest, but I almost never pull for the NL team. However, I dislike the wild card so much that being the wild card trumps being the AL team, so if it's the Red Sox, then any NL team will do (although I probably wouldn't watch much.)

Agreed. I always pull of the AL team in the World Series, even if it is the Wild Card. I have always had a "league loyalty" thing going -- when we're not competing against them, the AL teams are like fraternity brothers or something like that.

I tend to dislike the "Carmines" because of the Cubs fan devotion to the Red Sox, so I'll be pulling for Tampa from here on out. Face it, the better team beat us, and they mine as well win the world series. It makes for better bragging rights for the White Sox.

I gotta go with the Phillies. For some reason, that team seems to parallel the White Sox in some aspects. There were so many years in a row that they fell just short of making the playoffs (think Sox 2002-2004). Also, they've been good trading partners with us.

I was pulling for the Angels, and they probably win the whole damn thing if Aybar gets that squeeze down, but I guess I like the Rays now. Not going to be watching much, however, as I fear another RedSox title is in the cards...

I pretty much agree with this, starting from the point of losing most of my interest. I had hoped the 2003 Marlins would beat the Yankees, but, of course, they were the Yankees. I pulled for the Diamondbacks in 2001, having spent so many years in Arizona, and they were playing the Yankees. I always root against the Yankees. In 1984, the Padres were my National League team, so I rooted against the Tigers.

This year, without the White Sox and Cubs not getting to the World Series, I have lost most of my interest in the proceedings. Cubs-haters could pull for the Phillies to tie the Cubs in World Series championships. Currently, the Phillies have just the one from 1980. They could pull for the Rays as another expansion team (along with the Mets, Blue Jays, Royals, Marlins, Angels and Diamondbacks to win a World Series since it seemed so close in 1969. Even the Padres, Rockies and Brewers have been to the World Series. Actually, that hurts if you're a Sox fan, too, but not as much as it used to.

I have reasons not to want to see the Red Sox win it. I don't particularly want to see the Rays win it. I don't think it would be so bad this year if the National League wins.

I'm with you, Steve. I prefer the Rays because I like their style of play more than the sluggers of Phillie. I think Manny is the most despicable player in the majors, and it hurts me when he has success. But I absolutely hate the Red Sox, and will be rooting for anyone against them.

Previously, when I noted who I was pulling for, it's mostly in an inactive sense. I'll read the recaps and watch some of the games online and I'll try to make it out to a bar for a World Series game, but since I don't have cable and don't feel like dropping $20 on food/drinks every time I want to watch a baseball game unless the Sox are involved- it probably would only be a Game 6 or 7.

But look at it this way, how wild would it be for the Rays to win it all in only their 11th season in existence, not to mention their first EVER season above .500??? You know that wouldn't sit well with the sCrUBbie faithful, on top of everything else that has happened this post-season.
