View Full Version : WSI Predicts: Dodgers/Phillies NLCS

Make your picks on who wins the NL pennant.

Interestingly, this is the fourth time the Dodgers and Phillies will meet in the NLCS, but the first time in 25 years. The other 3 times were in '77 and '78 (LA won both times) and '83 (Phillies won).

I think game 1 will be the key. Whoever can keep the ball in the park will come out on top and I think Derek Lowe is capable of doing that. I like LA because of their starting pitching. They can win in 5 or 6.

Just gotta ask you guys:

Throughout any time of the season, except maybe the last week or so, did you imagine either of these teams playing in the World Series?

I'm sure not going to remember this season by the NL team in the World Series. Up untill a few weeks before the playoffs, I was sure that the Cubs would be in there. Sure, I'm happy there's no Cubs, but Phillies or Dodgers? Doesn't really captivate me...

Phillies have what the Cubs lacked, quality left handed hitting to match up with LA's right handed starters. I just think the Dodgers are locked in and Manny looks like he is going to have a historic postseason.

Dodgers in six. NLCS MVP = Billingsley

Going into the postseason I predicted Dodgers vs Red Sox. Which is a pretty captivating series I would imagine.

It'll come down to the starters of the Dodgers against Utley, Rollins, and Howard. Whoever wins that matchup wins the series. I picked the Phillies mainly due to homefield advantage, but either team can win this one. I can't wait to watch.

Phillies in 7. I think these teams are pretty evenly matched. Torre is a better manager, but I think the Phils have a better bullpen. You have to get up 5 or 6 on the Phils to be safe with Rollins, the Flyin' Hawaiian, Utley, Howard, Burrell, etc. I also don't want to have to stand suicide watch for one of my good friends who is a diehard Philly fan, lol. Their only weakness is that they seem to go cold for a game or two at a time ala the Cubs and that might be enough for LA to squeak the extra win out.

An excellent start to the NLCS. Furcal's poor throw was the difference in the whole game. It swung EVERYTHING. Lowe was just burying the Phils, then after Victorino get on, Utley hits a lazy homer, then Burrell with a missile. Game 2 is at 4 eastern time. Manuel gets lucky by not walking Manny in the 1st inning. Philly sports radio would have been all over him if they lost yesterday.

The Phils one and only world title came in 1980, when they defeated the Kansas City Royals, 4 games to 2. They have lost the World Series in their last two appearances though. They lost in 1983 against Baltimore, and in 1993 against Toronto.

Here are the teams that have gone the longest w/out winning the World Series:

Cubs (1908)
Indians (1948)
Giants (1954....when they were in NY, haven't won yet it in S.F.)
Rangers (never, became franchise in '61...only MLB team never to appear in an LCS and never to win a postseason series)
Astros (never, became franchise in '62)
Brewers, Padres, Nats/Expos (never, all became franchises in '69)
Mariners (never, became franchise in '77)
Pirates (1979)
Phillies (1980....last of the original franchises to win their 1st world series that year)

I had a similar experience at Dodger stadium this summer when I went to go see the Sox. While nothing was thrown at me (I'm a girl and my stepdad looks pretty threatening), we did get booed when we left early (Sox were down 5-0 in the 9th) and got heckled. Although it was annoying, I think it comes with the territory - it's their stadium.

And the Dodger dogs sucked. It was a nice day, though, perfect for baseball.

Dodger Dogs are the most overrated stadium food ever. They are premade, barely grilled and the bun is just too soggy.

I know this isn't traditional stadium food, but in the field level this year, they put a Canters deli stand. Their corned beef sandwich is awesome.

Think the Dodgers may finally be zapped. This was a bad game for them to lose. They had ample opportunities to put this game away, and didn't capitalize. Then Torre got waay too cute with managing the pen. I know a few times we have remarked at how the Phillies have the worst all-time record of the original 16 franchises and that they only have 1 WS title, etc. Say what you will, but they now have 4 pennants since 1980.

Wait, so the Phillies didn't win a World Series for 97 years? Holy crap...

Actually it was 77 years for them to win the World Series since the first World Series was in 1903.

But the Phillies were founded in 1883 and didn't win a league championship in that time before the WS was started. So, you are correct in saying that they went 97 years before they became "world" (or whatever the term is/was for a league-wide title) champions.
