The Cubs and their fans are finding out just how hard it is to win a World Series. This is why I fume whenever Cubs fans try to call out our 2005 season as "lucky" or "fluke". Yeah. The Cubs pretty much dug their own grave tonight. However I'd like to see the umpire call the game fairly. It seems the Cubs/Dodgers have gotten the worst umpiring crew, from the blown calls today for both teams. It also seems like last nights strike zone was pretty rough on both sides.

Umpiring has been terrible everywhere. The strike zone was horrible in today's Sox/Rays game. One pitch would be down the middle (for both teams), called a ball, and then the same pitch would be strike 3 later on. Some of them seemed like makeup calls. These guys are terrible, honestly, I'd rather have it all be technology oriented then have people's influences messing up the results. A ton is riding on these games...

How many more excuses are we going to hear?

The cubs aren't pitching, the cubs aren't hitting blahblahblah. Dempster walked too many men and the Cubs made too many errors. I keep on reading that the dodgers are 'swiping' and 'stealing' games.

Maybe it's b/c we lost today, but I haven't taken so much joy from a Cubs loss in years. Those "woe is me" crowd shots had me laughing out loud.

Stockton did say the whole crowd was standing at one point in the ninth, then they flashed to the pitcher/batter shot and everyone on camera behind the plate was sitting down. LOL.

I love the watermelon hat guy and the 40 y.o. guy who brings his glove and then puts the mitt on his head in a show of depression. "Hey, world! Get a load of me! I'm crazy. The 2000 White Sox had the best record in the American League and lost the first two games at home against the wild card. Stuff happens. I was down the line in left that year. I know how those Cubs fans felt.

Of course, I wasn't talking garbage all year about how the 2000 White Sox were going to win the World Series. The season gave me hope, not confidence that we couldn't lose.

Winning the World Series isn't easy. It's not something you do by assembling the best players in April. The lesson Cubs fans took from 2005 wasn't that the White Sox had accomplished something incredibly special, but, incorrectly, that winning the Series can't be that difficult. If the White Sox can win it, the Cubs can, and will.

Winning the World Series isn't easy. Getting to the World Series isn't easy. The Cubs have made it harder on themselves, and even if they come back against the Dodgers, it appears they would have to get past a Phillies team that looks pretty good.

I grew up in Munster, Ind., with Chicago baseball. Getting to the World Series is something Chicago people should only talk about on Santa's lap. If Chicago baseall fans are now treating it like some sort of entitlement, their pain is self-inflicted.

That's actually the thoughts I get from some Cubs fans; but, the Cubs have it even easier to get to the World Series, as they play in the weaker NL. Getting to the World Series was a very tough thing for our Sox to do playing in the dominant AL. They first took down the defending champs in a sweep, then they really took it to a great Angel team. They had the most fits in the World Series, but still responded well to adversity. The Cubs have never handled adversity well.

Also when the playoffs started, our whole rotation was hurt. I wanted to win the world series that year, but it just didn't work out that way.
Nobody ever said it was going to be easy for the Cubs, but everybody was acting like it would happen, and it still can. The Dodger players even said that the Cubs are really pressing. You would have to think that the expectations as well as the 100 year drought and the curses are having an effect on them. Even though they don't want to admit it.
We were privilaged to witness 2005, which is why you always want more.

Exactly! In 2000 no one had the Sox pencilled-in for a championship ever since Spring Training, as was the case with the Cubs this year.

It may be that IT IS GONNA HAPPEN, AGAIN! The Cubbies are probably going to flop again!

From the "IT'S GONNA HAPPEN" shirts to WGN radio endlessly playing a clip of Santo burping out, "THIS IS OUR YEAR!" you'd think that at sometime Cubbie fans would stomp out that crap until they finally actually do something.

NOTE TO CUBBIE FANS: STOP TELLING ME WHAT YOUR TEAM IS GONNA DO. GET BACK TO ME WHEN THEY DO SOMETHING!

That was brutal. I actually felt bad for the true Cubs fans. It is clear that their team is choking. Fukodome being the main culprit, IMO. Man, am I glad he made the wrong decision!

BTW, that last pitch to Ward wasn't even close to being a strike. Now, I don't think they would have come back, but I hate terrible umpiring, no matter when I see it.

Ugh.. i had to work til 1am this morning-- but thankfully I got to watch the game. I obviously also have too much time on my hands because ive been reading this thread since page 17 of the last thread.. so for about a good hour. Its kind of embarassing

However, not as embarassing as the cubs performance last night!

Keep it up cubbies- im LOVIN the way you play! :)

ps--to those asking how much tickets were- a girl i know payed $900 for tickets to last nights game and tonights game- and is also flying to LA to see tomorrow nights game- I mean seriously- ***? And this girl is like.. 21 with NO college degree and works retail- how the HELL is she getting the money to do all this? I have to bust my ass between full time college and waitressing and a 6 month in order to buy a couple new sox shirts a year- let alone PLAYOFF TICKETS and FLY to LA for the game!

Yes they won 97 games. They beat up on Pittsburgh seemingly every other week. Middle relief just awful. Wuertz, the Notre Dame Wide Receiver, Neal Cotts ain't 2005 Neal Cotts. Bob Howry ain't 2000 Bob Howry.

Fukudome got figured out in the 2d half of the season.

I'll give the Cubs credit for Wood being a good closer, Dempster became a very good starter. The Harden trade was a steal.

As pointed out during the telecast last night, these ain't the Dodgers the Cubs played earlier. Now with Casey Blake and Manny Ramirez, they good.

I am not going to gloat too much when the Cubs lose (other than to the ssa-hat "fans" who fill the bleachers.). Why gloat over an expected outcome?

It's ridiculous that a game in Chicago started after 8:30 pm central.

Yeah, well that's the dollar at work. I do think that played to the Dodgers as that is the time they are used to starting (or close to it).

Still, not the reason the flubbies got beat.

I admit I'm a bit stunned by this. When I first went to vote in the poll in the PL I wanted to vote Dodgers in 4 because I felt their pitching and with the addition of Manny they would be a tough combination in a short series (I said as much to a flubbie friend before the series started be replied that the Dodgers weren't a good defensive team mostly due to Manny - um... nevermind). However, I convinced myself that I was letting my bias get in the way and voted flubbies in 4. Obviously that isn't going to happen. Still, anyone who says they expected the flubbies to tank like this is a die hard hater...

I don't agree. I'm not a hater -- I don't much care about the Cubs, and as a Sox fan living in Chicago, I get tired of the media obsession sometimes; but I don't hate the Cubs.

I did think that this series would go to the Dodgers in 4 or fewer games. My reasons for thinking that were two:

One, the Dodgers are NOT to be taken lightly. The combination of Joe Torre, Casey Blake, and -- the biggest factor -- Manny Ramirez has changed this team in the second half of the season, and all for the better. I listen to and watch a lot of baseball, on XM or Extra Innings, and I have followed the Dodgers for a while because I am a great fan of Manny. He is key to their post-season and he's stepping up from day one.

Second, the pressure of expectations on the Cubs is enormous and may even be considered crushing. No, the players don't care about goats and curses and 100 years, but they are under a microscope and it is difficult enough to play in the post-season without having the expectations of five generations of fans and the national media heaped on you. I think Piniella can handle it, but I don't know that some players can. That's not Cub hate, that's just an assessment.

I did not think that the Cubs would play corpse-ball the way they have. Dempster's unsteady performance surprised me, as did the errors by the infielders in last night's game. But I do attribute those things to the pressure of expectations, and to the Dodgers getting into their heads now.

JMO.

...and I'm loving it!! Six months of hearing that the Cubs are going to win the World Series, and now they are toast. I feel no sympathy whatsoever for the Scrubs fans. If you haven't learned after 100 years of failure, you deserve everything you get. Sure, the Sox took 88 years, but we also had to deal with the Yankees. There is no team in the NL that has 26 championships. I love the Scrubs fans that say we "hold on to 2005". Well, it's alot better than holding onto 1908.

Or maybe they just follow baseball?

The last month, the Dodgers have looked great, the Cubs, not so good.

IIRC, the Dodgers have the best pitching in the NL.

Since they got Manny, they went from the bottom four in runs scored to the top four.

Myself, along with some of the Cubs fans I know, thought the Dodgers were the worst matchup for the Cubs in the first round.

Did I expect them to lose in such embarrassing fashion? No, I don't think anyone did. But picking them over the Cubs doesn't make you a hater.

I thought the Cubs would win this series in four. I also expected them to lose at some point because they are the Cubs after all. But they've exceeded even my expectations on how that would happen. One pitcher who is pretty much unbeatable at home gives up a season-high in walks, which leads to a grand slam. Their "ace" has dropped off badly since his no-hitter, but you can't entirely blame last night's loss on him. His infield failed him in a way that wouldn't be acceptable in, quoting today's Sun-Times, "the Little League World Series, much less the big leagues." If the Cubs can win 97 regular-season games and then possibly get swept and swept good in the first round of the playoffs, I may never take this franchise seriously again unless they somehow win over 100 games one year. You'd expect them to at least put up a fight at Wrigley, but those first two games were downright pathetic.

I predicted Dodgers in 4. I thought they would "steal one" at Wrigley, and then take the next two at Chavez Ravine against Harden and The Slam My Mitt Down guy. That said, it's absolutely hilarious how lost this team looks these two games getting their asses kicked. I also am enjoying the constant showing of angst in the audience and looks of shock and worry on their faces. Now that the series shifts to L.A., I am cautiously hoping the Dodgers can close it out in one game and get this damn thing over with.

It's not the losses that are shocking it's the way they are losing. That's my point about being a hater. It's one thing to say the Dodgers will win this series, but anyone who predicted that kind of back to back blowouts isn't just "following baseball" they are voting with their heart.

i havent washed my hair today yet (yes i know. gross) so I threw on my sox cap and called it a day..I get to Quiznos and an older guy is standing behind me in the line... That's disgusting. How can you live in illinois and NOT be a cubs fan?"

I mean we are talking a VERY MEAN VOICE. Like, he wasn't just kidding around and taking a jab- he was seriously being mean.

He then bends down, gets in my son's face who is sitting there in his carrier and goes "its okay- its not your fault your mommy is a dumbass."

I took him by the shirt, pulled him up and looked him square in the eye and said "YOU are the epitome of why I am not raising my son a cubs fan. Why on EARTH would you get in a 6 month olds face and call his mother a dumbass? That is completely uncalled for, immature, and just plain rude. If you come near my son again I will make sure the next person's face you get in is a cop's- and his grandfather is a DIE HARD sox fan AND a cop so you might want to re-think your actions here."

He just stared at me and walked out. Didnt even order. Just walked out. I was so shaken by the whole thing.. I had to sit down for a minute at Quiznos before I left and calm down- I wasnt going to drive with my son in the car being so pissed off.

The Phillies may be the NL rep. Myers was dealing yesterday.

As for the Cubs, they can only win a long offensive battle for Game 3. If the Dodgers jump out early on them, they won't even come back to Chicago. They'll just drive out to Malibu and take a swim!

I have to ask this probably towards the older Sox fans. I'm 39 and have been following the Sox since 75. Growing up with Cubs "lived in the Ravenswood area" I never really hated them. They didn't seem as obnoxious and as arrogant as they do now. My question is this. Have Cub fans been this way for decades or since more or less the 80's? I know there is bad apples in each fan base etc. But really when did this hate start? I have never noticed the fan hate until really the early to mid 80's.
The only thing Cubs fans did to tick me off was in 93 when a group waived the Canadian flag.

1984 was pretty much the flashpoint; they had a surprisingly good season, WGN was starting to come in to its own as a Superstation and the sheep finally embraced Harry Caray as one of their own (after being more or less indifferent towards him in 1982 and 1983). Let's not forget that the upper deck at Wrigley was still closed off regularly as recently as '83 (but no one DARES mention that little fact!) and '83 was also the year of the legendary Lee Elia rant towards the few folks who bothered showing up at Wrigley for the sole purpose of heckling his team.

I know they play in LA, but I'm pretty sure they start at 7 or 7:30 in LA. That translates to 9 or 9:30 here.

Right so an 8:30 start time in Chicago is 6:30 start time in LA - close enough for all intents and purposes. It's not an excuse for why the flubbies got blown out. If they were playing in LA they'd have to start at those times, but certainly didn't hurt the Dodgers last night to have a start time pretty close to what their bodies are most used to.

Wow.

So I just drove into town (i live in the country) with my little boy to pick my dad and I up some Quiznos...

i havent washed my hair today yet (yes i know. gross) so I threw on my sox cap and called it a day..I get to Quiznos and an older guy is standing behind me in the line... (we're talking probably mid-50s..def old enough to know better) He taps me on the shoulder and says in a very disgusted voice... "I hope you're not teaching your son to be a sox fan.

Wow. Im still mad about it.

Glad you told his ass off! The jerk! On a related note, I'm thinking that the best response Sox fans can have to all of this is silence. No taunting, no teasing, nothing but wearing Sox gear proudly and cheering for our team.

I think that some of this angst and hostility you all are dealing with in Sox Country has to do with the thrilling way our beloved got it done on Tuesday with the whole baseball world watching. Oh, and something that happened in 2005 might have something to do with it, too. Point is, our mere success provokes them. That's enough for me.

Un-****ing real. What kind of middle aged degenerate ass clown gets in the face of a mother and a baby about anything, let alone something as insignificant as a baseball team. I'm all for joking around and using my line of "Uh oh, better call DCSF, you shouldn't be raising your child to be a Sox / Cubs fan...ha ha ha", but what the hell ? What a goddamned scumbag. Totally agree-- part of me wanted to take a jab at the way the cubs have blown the last two games but briefly after the thought passed through my mind I thought "no chance.. why stoop down to his level? Why make fun of the cubs while he's standing here making himself look like an ass?" Might as well of handled it with class so that everyone there could see the utter ignorance of this paticular cub fan. ew

I agree- I thought at first maybe he was just kidding around... so I kinda smiled at him and started to kid around back- but Nope, as soon as I looked up and saw him i realized he was being DEAD SERIOUS.

He was also dressed in a suit and tie and had a "CAT" ID badge on-- so apparently he worked for catepiller. I should have looked for his name but i was so mad about it I didnt think of it.

The kid that took my debit card said something- he apologized for the older guy's behavior.. other than that no one really said anything. There were two women sitting there eating lunch and one of them said "Good for you!" when i was walking out... but everyone pretty much stood there and stared.. I think they were in shock about what had happened.

I just couldnt believe he bent down and got so close to my son's face- I totally went into mom mode and almost beat the **** out of him. I was ready to kick his ass if he even thought about touching my child... ugh

^haha thats great. I got into a good 10 minute argument with a Cubs fan before the start of my shakesparean lit class thursday (while i was missing the first 2 innings of the game) and my Lit Prof is from Canada- she had no idea what was going on but was trying soooo hard to be a part of the convo lol. It was so cute.. She said "You never hear anyone argueing this passionatly about Shakespear."...hmmmm. LOL

Everytime someone knew would walk in the room she would look at them and go "theyve been going at it like this for a good 5 minutes now..." and everyone would just sit there and listen to us. Maybe i just like to argue with people but i LOVE argueing with Cub fans. He kept trying to tell me that the Cubs weren't a popular team nation-wide. He kept compareing them to the Yanks. TOTALLY DIFFERENT LEAGUES. ***? And on top of it he tried telling me the NL was just as tough of a league as the AL. Luckily this kid and i doooo get along pretty well outside of class so we were like "I still like you as a person ASIDE from the baseball stuff" after we finished argueing. LOL:rolleyes:

Give me a break. When did you become the fun police? I agree that we have our own buisness to take care of but i personally get some joy out of watching the cubs fall to their demise as well. Im beginning to wonder if anyone here KNOWS that this is the kind of stuff that goes on on the Whats the Score thread and attempts to just stay away from it instead of coming in here and pretending to be my father-jeesh.

And let's not forget- the sox were NEVER projected to win their division this season. I spent 2 weeks straight at the end of March/Beginning of April in the hospital with my son who was premature- I must have watched ESPN non-stop in anticipation for the season... 99% of the time it was Detroit, Minn, and Cleveland who were the ALC faveorites. The sox won the division. It might've taken then 163 games to get there, but by-God.. they did it! Im EXTREAMLY proud of them and as much as I want SO BADLY for them to make it to the ALCS, anything else is just iceing on the cake.

The hype surrounding the teams is totally different. If I want to make myself feel better by bashing on the Cubs- I will. Thats why I come to What's the Score. You dont see us posting these in the Sox threads do you? Seriously.Im not trying to be mean but really..... DONT READ THE THREAD IF YOU DONT WANT TO PARTICIPATE

When did it become not cool to like the Sox and hate the Cubs? Why do the two have to be mutually exclusive?

They won 97 games, breezed to the postseason, and their stupid fans endlessly proclaimed through out the summer, "It's Gonna Happen!" or "This is the year!" bla bla bla...

So yeah, it sucks that the Sox are crashing and burning, but **** the Cubs. What's happening on the North Side is still pretty hilarious.

That's the way I see it. If the Sox and Cubs play at the same time, I'm watching the Sox. But if the Cubs are on afterwards, you bet your ass I'm going to watch and laugh. This is the cockiest team I've EVER seen from their fans, to their manager, down to their players.

If this was any team that was so adamantly proclaiming they would win the World Series in June... I'd laugh as well. If the Angels starting talking **** and wearing "This is Our Year" shirts in June I would be laughing at their demise as well. Add in the fact that you potentially have friends that have been in your face with "this is the year" crap and it'll feel good to shove it back in their faces.

That's all. Don't get it twisted that I or anyone posting here doesn't care about the Sox (obviously there are those fans), but I still want a White Sox winner. I haven't been too worried about the games in Tampa because I marked those down as losses anyway, we're a home team through and through. We're at home now, without Vazquez pitching... if we lose either of these two THEN I'll be pissed.

Exactly- I have a friend who always says "love your team more than you hate ours." The other day i looked at her and said "do you ever think theres a REASON why so many people HATE your team???" I cant stand cub fans... and I cant stand all the cocky-ness thats been going on with this team this WHOLE SEASON. Ew- it makes me sick. My dad kept saying "they're overly confident".. I said "no. They're not confident. THEY'RE COCKY. There's a biiiiig difference." I cant deal with it- at least with yankees fans they have a history to be cocky ABOUT- Cubs fans have NOTHING to be cocky about and it pisses me off.

So yes- I love watching the cubs lose. But do I get antsy and excited and get up in my seat and yell at the tv like I do when the Sox are on?? Hellllll no! I love my sox and i love watching the cubs lose-- Get over it!

Yes, watching the Cubs fail is indeed good entertainment. Being obsessed over it? I find that kinda weird. Especially since their record has zero to do with our postseason chances.

Very Creepy if you ask me.

To have 50 pages of posts all on the same "Cub Hating" topic while our team is playing the most important games in franchise history outside of 2005, that's very childish to me.

Okay A) one of the most important games in franchise HISTORY!? I dont think so, smalls. I highly doubt in 50 years the two games we lost in the ALDS to TB are going to be a much talked about top 10 most important games in white sox history. You're fooling yourself if you think that.

B) Who gives you the right to come here and be an ass to everyone? Just let it go. No one here is OBSSESED with seeing the cubs lose... And it's a damn internet forum. You have no idea anything about anyone behind the computer screens. Get over it- go find something better to do than coming onto this thread and making fun of your fellow sox fans for an opinion they have. Obviously a lot of people share the same opinion if there ARE 50 pages in this thread--I really think YOU need to grow up. This is NOT that big of a deal if we want to sit here and make a 50,000 page thread about how we hate the cubs. Its not like we are plotting the death of every cub fan on earth- its good hearted, comic jabbing. It's a comic relief. Get over it and find something else to bitch about.

C) thanks for calling all your fellow sox fans childish and ignornant. You are obviously way more mature than the rest of us.

These are the most important games in our franchise history TODAY because they are the ones you are playing for right now. This is the year we are playing for, not last year nor next year. What happens in these play-offs will dictate on what direction this franchise will go for the future.

As far as the rest of your happy happy jiberish ... Save it.

I don't see anything wrong with watching the Cubs lose. It's just more ammo to throw at Cubs fans during stupid arguments.

The problem with our 05 World Series is that Cubs fans always degrade it, mostly because they're baseball-stupid. To say that their team lost miserably in a season where things were so promising is like icing on the cake in those stupid arguments.

You see, "today" and "history" are two different things, although tomorrow today will be history. You can guess how big games will be historically. I'm guessing the playoff against the Twins will go down as one of the great games, certainly one of the most satisfying games in White Sox history. I'm guessing the loses in Tampa Bay will have less historical significance than the losses at home against the Mariners eight years ago. But there is a distinct difference between games being important right now and games being important in the cenury-plus history of the franchise. I don't believe these games will have a big affect on the future because, win or lose, I don't think they will change what management believes needs to be changed, any more than the Angels will go into rebuilding mode if they are swept by the Red Sox or Cubs management will break up their team if they are swept by the Dodgers.

I mentioned the Cubs and Dodgers because it is the subject of this thread. A lot of the posts here are not from people obsessed with the Cubs losing. I can understand the pain that would be involved in seeing the Cubs advance while the Sox season ends after one postseason round, but I live closer to Disneyland than Chicagoland.

Interesting! My parents live in CA too. It's overrun with Dodgers and Angels fans where they live, but I'd give Dodger fans the edge in numbers. I wore my Sox hat around this summer and got confused looks. However, I did go to Dodger stadium to see the Sox, and there was a healthy amount of Sox fans there. I was pleased.

The sad thing is that we had not played a single inning yet and the Cubs trashing began as soon as the Cubs went down via that Grand Slam. While we had our own dilema to deal with about 18 hours later.

No one here has ESP... no one knew that our game 1 was going to be something to deal with 18 hours later. For someone who refers to the present as "history" I'd think it wouldnt be a problem if we were conversating about the cubs before the sox even took the field for BP the next day

I've never been to Dodger Stadium. I've seen the Angels play at home close to 50 times. There were always a lot of Sox fans in the crowd. There are a lot of transplanted Chicagoans in the Southland, and they don't have much of a chance to see the Sox.

Manny Ramirez doesn't get love in NoCal. I was in San Fancisco last Sunday, nowhere near the ballpark, and I saw a grown man wearing an orange and black shirt proclaiming "Osama bin Laden is a Dodger fan." The Giants-Dodgers thing is not unlike the Cubs-Soxx thing. They transfered an inter-city rivalry in the 1950s to a north-south West Coast thing.

I don't know if Dodgers fans are rooting against the Angels and vice versa. But I can see how Sox fans can pull hard for their team and hope for the Cubs to lose so that the Sox will get the attention in the city they deserve. I don't think that's Cub-obsession.

I still don't get this issue, what are we, idiots that can't multitask? There's 4 series in baseball right now, how dare us follow one?!? Especially when one of the team's is in the city and the media and their fans shove them down our throats.

The games aren't even on at the same time. It's not like there's a shortage of Sox talk. Once someone explains to me how talking about the Cubs has any effect on how closely you follow or care about the Sox, then I'll buy the excuse. Until then, it's just another crap excuse started by hypocritical Cubs fans who don't have many ways to answer back when getting ripped.

And by the way, maybe there wouldn't be so many posts if everytime the same 12 year old argument breaks out where some one feels like the need to dictate what other people should talk about

Dodger stadium has the worst hot dogs. Other than that, it's pretty nice. But I will always prefer the Cell. I haven't been to see the Angels, but I might go this summer. Did anyone heckle you? Was it a nice stadium?

Yes, I think the Dodgers/Angels rivalry is absolutely nothing compared to Giants/Dodgers. I have a Dodgers fan friend who loathes the Giants and is okay with the Angels. Angels fans especially love AJ.

I was in San Francisco this summer and I looked all around for a Rowand shirt, but shocker - it was mostly Zito shirts I found. I did see a Sox fan with a Konerko jersey, which was awesome.

I saw that same exact thing, I was just about to come on here and post it. I was saying that I wasn't cheering against the Cubs and wasn't seeing any joy in them getting beat, and now I know why, it all has to do with their fans. Dodgers up 2-0, have dominated the series, and after one single, drunk token Cub fan trying to mock the LA crowd, telling them to shut up. And all those feelings went down the drain

Derek Lee is a good guy, other then Soriano/Ramirez, I don't mind the Cubs, it's their fans. Just like that idiot overreacting over a single, that's how they all act when they beat a last place team in June, they act like it's the World Series and say 'this is the year!', **** them

My brother (Cubs fan) was feeling confident with Harden going tonight, but I reminded him it won't do a damn bit of good if the Cubs' offense lays another egg. And here we go again. Plus the Dodgers have been really hot the past month. I honestly think they are the last team the Cubs wanted to face in Round 1.
