Is it me or did our crowd yesterday completely put this one to shame? Not just after the LA lead, but from the start of the game, they sound dead. Pretty funny since the attendance crown is one of their few bragging points they always bring up...Meanwhile Stockton keeps trying to hype them up, 'listen to this crowd now...this crowd will go crazy if this happens' whenever anything happens, well duh they'll make noise, but he's calling the fan reaction more than the game

Hearing a ton of boos too. Remember that ridiculous random Sun-Times story of Sox players being booed in the middle of the year? Maybe it's their turn for some fair coverage...(meanwhile, today on CSN, Josh Mora was talking about the Sox and said something like 'this team was abandoned last week, even by their fans, but they came back...', What? Did he not watch the Cle series?

You know, if the Cubs lose tonight (and it looks like they will but they have a tendency to come back at inopportune times), it will be curious to see how Zambrano responds. Does Big Z show up or does the Big craZ show up? I seem to recall him getting beat in game five of the NLCS five years ago when they coulda clinched in Florida. But, we'll see.

It's still early in the first game, and in the series, but I mentioned last week how the last thing the Cubs wanted to see in the first round was the Dodgers. Even though they play in a crappy division and a pitcher's park, the starters and relievers are very solid.

As far as the crowd goes, Stockton mentioned in the 2nd inning how quiet it was there on 2-strike counts. Meanwhile, he noted, the Cell was rambunctious last nite each time a poor little Twinkie had two strikes on him. He, Darling and Gwynn attributed it to Cubs fan's nervousness, which seems funny given how elitist and confident they've been coming into this series. I have it on mute now, but the long faces are enough to put a smile on my face, which, of course, will only pale in comparison to my grins about 16 hours from now.

He's mentioned it every couple of innings, actually -- he keeps saying stuff like "quite a contrast with US Cellular Field last night, when the crowd was amped up and out of their seats on every two-strike count." Seriously, I've heard him make at least four references to the differences in the fans.

I would watch this game no matter who the Dodgers were playing; I love Manny Ramirez and I think Joe Torre is a premier manager. The TBS guys have been talking a lot about the difference in the club since Blake and Ramirez joined it. They're a much tougher opponent than the Mets would have been for the Cubs, definitely.

All day today, the guys in my office who are Cub fans have been telling me how they were certain, CERTAIN, that this series would be a cakewalk. They told me Manny is not all that great, Torre is not that good of a manager ("why did the Yankees get rid of him if he was good?"), this is the year (whatever that means), it's gonna happen (yes, something will happen, always does)......

Your right. And, it that confidence/cockiness from their fans that put the bad taste in my mouth.

Heck ... I heard their fans talking amongst themselves yesterday morning saying, "I really hope the Sox lose tonight." Personally, I don't necessarily hope they lose (we have our own problems to worry about), but I'll gladly laugh when they do.

I don't know that statistic, but I know that the team that wins the first game in the ALDS has gone on to win the series 31 out of 36 times, which you know, makes tomorrow rather important for us.

5 game series. Road team wins Game 1. What percentage of those teams go on to win the series? Anyone?

Interesting question, and one we can hope will be relevant to our Sox! As near as I can tell (although I may have ****ed up something looking at and calculating this), since the wild-card format, 18 road teams have won the first game of the division series and went on to win the series. Eight won the first game on the road but lost. So the answer to your question is 69 percent.

Minutiae: I'm not sure if I should take it back to the beginning of the wild-card format. When did 2-2-1 replace 2-3? 1998? And, as noted, I didn't look at the old five-game LCS results.

Anyway, if you're interested, I can post the teams and years (and you can correct me where I'm wrong!).

As for the Dodgers taking a game at Wrigley ... I'm not totally shocked. Lowe's experience and stuff translated very well to this situation and with the exception of one pitch, he was great. Tomorrow is just as tough though ... Billingsley is a GREAT young pitcher who was the best pitcher on the Dodgers staff this year. OTOH, the Cubs have done pretty well with him this year (11 IP, 6 ER, 3 HR, 11 H, 5 BB). And yet, NO ONE knows what to expect out of Zambrano. I thought they said that in the NL first game losers were 4-24 in those series. Whatever it is...it makes it clear that Javy has a huge responsibility on his shoulders tomorrow for the Sox. It is hard to win a series if the sox lose tomorrow.

These 5 game series are brutal...too short. If Tadahito had not gone deep on Wells in game 2 in 05, Sox would have been behind the 8-ball.

Scouting ahead for the World Series:D:, I look at the Dodgers as the most likely to go if they beat the Cubs. With manny and blake, they are much better. They always pitch. They have a good bullpen. With Furcal back, they have a potent lineup.

I would rather play any other NL team in the Series. Dodgers look like a hot team and Torre is in their dugout.

Did you see the swing of Manny's HR? It wasn't a full swing and that ball traveled. Dropped the bat on a pitch 8 inches off the ground. Dempster got him out on strictly high stuff. Marshall didn't get the scouting report.

I haven't thought about that play in years. At the time I was taking a lot of abuse in junior high school for insisting on being a Sox fan, my favorite player had suffered what everyone believed to be a career-ending injruy on a mortar range and watching the Cubs lose was the best I could do for baseball satisfaction. Good times.

As for the crowd tonight, I got the impression the fans were afraid the Cubs would lose, even though they might have believed they would win. When the Sox came home last Friday, the fans were afraid the Sox would lose. The Sox had just lost three in the Metrodome. The Cubs had lost six straight postseason games, five going back to the ninght they were five outs a way from the World Series. All season long everyone has been saying this is the Cubs year; forget the curse. But even Cubs fans might profess they don't believe in curse will be afraid of it until the Cubs give them reason not to. And even people who consider the curse thing silly (despite its public celebration) have seen great seasons end suddenly in early October.

Manny was fooled by the pitch, granted, but being a great hitter that he is, he managed to stay back & balanced long enough to get extension down through the ball, catching it with 'sweet meat'....

TV sometimes fools the viewer: actually the when the swing looks "big", it often can mean the batter slightly mistimed the ball and/or got it off the end of his bat. And when a slugger's swing looks "short" through the ball, it can mean it's in the wheelhouse and well-timed.

For instance, Jim Thome's mammouth blast to CF against KC back in July, it almost looked like he barely hit it with check-swing.... while Konerko's big-time swing last night that people thought was way out of the park, was just a harmless fly-out. Baseball's funny like that.

So happy Fukudome didnt sign with us

I'll take him on the Sox as another reclamation Project that Kenny seems to have considerable success with.... provided the Cubs pay for, at minimum, half his salary.

Hell, if Andruw Jones, Jeff Francauer, etc came on the relative cheap, I'd listen. Anything to improve the club and its depth in 2009.

My point is the White Sox weren't expected to do ****, there's little pressure on them (and personally ANYTHING they do is gravy as far as I'm concerned) the Cubs on the other hand have the weight of the world on their shoulders. If they fall apart and die it's a calamity given how much they have spent the past few years to their fans and their organization.

That's the way I see it, too. By beating the Twinkies and putting themselves in first place in the ALC on the last day of the season, the Sox have exceeded the expectations of most, and given their fans a very good season.

Can they do more? Sure! And I hope they DO! If they don't, though, I won't throw things and sulk; I haven't been running around town shouting "THIS IS THE YEAR!" all season.

I may be wrong, but I believe that the pressure of expectations that is on the Cubs right now is enormous. There is no comparable pressure on the Sox.

Manny Ramirez is incredible. :D: Joe Torre is a managerial genius. :D: A White Sox-Dodgers World Series, albeit unlikely, would be sweet.

This from a town whose high school calls their team the Pretzels.
Thats because it was Pretzel City USA, where pretzels were first made. Stupid I know, but look at the mlb team they like. I dare anyone to lay claim to ANY larger fan base (other than Clark and Addison) for the cubs, then whats here in Freeport. The cub popularity in this city of 26k is enormous and growing by the day. White Sox is something you have on the top drawer on your dresser.

BTW I like the Prezels theme: "You can eat us but you can't beat us!"

Left-handed Cub fan caught on tape (pretty good documentation) throwing it back on the field. Anyone have an idea what the ball was worth? I didn't see the Grand Slam. Was that ball also thrown back?
Anyone remember any other valuable home run balls thrown back?
What a dumb azz tradition!

I wish the camera had stayed on the fan long enough to see if he switched balls (Cubs fans have been busted numerous times for doing this).

1) If he switched the balls and threw back a phony, he's your garden-variety idiot.

2) If he didn't switch balls, and threw away a postseason home run ball from a first-ballot hall-of-famer (douchebag that he is), then he's a KING-SIZED idiot.

I can't agree with you more. The media and cub fan hype is disgusting for the Cubs. In there mind they have won the World Series already and playing the next three teams for them is just for show.

I think this happened in 2003 to them and I think it is happening now too.

They got spanked last night. I'd LOVE for our sox too keep their hunger to win, and get to the World Series and see the Cubs flop against the Cubs. Oh how sweet that would be.

Gosh, that was a beautiful game to watch. I would have been more disappointed if the Dodgers had lost because Dempster was simply awful. I knew that they'd have trouble with Manny, and Torre bringing in Maddux to close it out is classic Torre. Truly evil.

I CALLED IT! Dumpster sucks - I don't care what he did at Wrigley this year. He's a chump, and this whole pitching staff are a bunch of chumps - Z's the only one with talent - but he's a headcase so...

Im considering teaching him to be a submarine pitcher. Being a right handed pitcher is NOT an option for this child. He can submarine pitch or pitch left-handed. It's up to him. HAHA

I forget who the kid was, it's in moneyball- he played for the A's.. his dad had a stroke and he couldnt lift his arm above his shoulder- so that's how the kid learned to pitch.. sub arm.

Sorry-- back on topic.

And you'll get used to the early mornings :-) Just drink lots of coffee and watch mike and mike. That's what I do!

I hear you. If Vazquez doesn't throw well this afternoon, after the gutsy outings by Buehrle, Danks, and Floyd, then I don't know how you can justify keeping him.

I think he'll do fine, though, if he has any semblance of pride. A Sox win in the dome will be massive today.

i completley agree. A total 1st or 2nd inning breakdown will kill my spirit today.. Ill be in class for the first 45 minutes of the game. My professor will just have to deal with me checking my text updates from mlb.com. The anticipation is getting to me.

I don't know that statistic, but I know that the team that wins the first game in the ALDS has gone on to win the series 31 out of 36 times, which you know, makes tomorrow rather important for us.

That would be incorrect.

The winner of game 1 in an ALDS has gone 14-14 out of 28 chances. Winning game 1 hasn't proven to provide any greater success at winning the series than losing.

It's been a huge advantage in the NL because the NLDS game 1 winner has gone 24-4 in their 28 chances.
