I'm surprised no one started a postgame thread yet.

Very nice performance by Floyd and the bullpen tonight.

I don't want to get ahead of things; we need to win tomorrow night. But if we do, based on their performance today, Thornton, Dotel, Linebrink and Carrasco could help the Sox actually do some damage in the playoffs.

Oh, and Alexei is the Sox version of Devin Hester. Alexei Ramirez, you are RIDICULOUS!

Yeah, I was looking all over for a thread! I was worried in the sixth when Gavin threw that ball away because the offense was struggling once again. Soft-tossing lefty, soft-tossing righty makes no difference. However, just like Sunday they found a way to get it done.

Two down, 12 to go. This is the kind of finish that gets you on a role entering the playoffs. Let's win this division! Black Tuesday baby!! :bandance:

Beautiful game by Gavin today. I figured once we got up 4 runs+, the Tiggers would start mailing it in. I give them credit, though. They made us earn it. Bring on the Twinkees!

todays game was epic. Freddy's redemption...he made some money today..in fact ..I wish the Sox would sign him...the guy just knows how to pitch ..sort of like MB.

Alexei was the hero but Gavin needs special mention...the kid has just been our most dependable pitcher all year long and on 3 days he gutted it out.

The bullpen shined for a change...could this be a sign of things to come.

If they don't win it tomorrow I'll still be very upset that they basically threw away a divisional title because of their play the past few weeks, however, that being said they do deserve big time props for getting up off the deck and giving themselves a chance.

That takes some guys and should be noted.

Well that turned out to be a great finish for the Sox! Let get the ****ing god damn Twins tomorrow with the blackout of blackburn! Haha, this is itching for a headline either way. "Blackburn's blackout" or "Blackburn blacks Sox out of playoffs"

One problem with this lineup though, I really hate Wise in the #2 hole as well as in the field. I know Swisher has struggled but honestly, isn't he a better option than Wise at this point in the season? I just find it very had to believe that a journeyman OF is batting second during the most crucial run of the season.
Other than that, please don't overmanage this game tomorrow Ozzie! We need this win baby!!! :gulp:

The thing I hate is Wise for some reason sucks in the lineup but is a great pinch hitter. Swish is iffy as a pinch hitter and doesn't give you the speed off the bench Wise does, so I agree about Swish in.

Why didn't Garcia get the loss today? He was charged with the run Wise scored to tie it. Doesn't he also get charged with the walk to Dye since Garcia left with a 1-1 count on Dye? Dye scored the lead run, and since Detroit never took the lead or got even again Garcia should have gotten the loss. According to the box score, however, Galarraga got the loss.

Does it really matter of they exceeded expectations? This is their division. They've lead it all year, so the Twins do not deserve it. They haven't been able to lead by more than a .5 game all year.

They cannot let the Twins steal another division championship. The Sox have a chance to take back what has been rightfully theirs all year...and I think they will.

Nope, that is the tough thing about mlb scoring. The pitcher who throws the final pitch of the AB gets the hook. If Freddy left on a 0-2 count and Galarraga got the K it would have been his K

Besides the Tigers, I don't think many teams in the Central get covered that thoroughly. I might be wrong, but with Chicago almost completely absorbed in blue, and Minnesota being made out of illegal immigrant workers (can't find the teal option on here) there is no way this game will get any appreciation from anybody.

Great game and great win. The crowd was electric, practically willing the Sox to a win. After the last out, we ran out of the ballpark and stood in line and got tickets to Tuesday's game. I'm hoping for an even livelier crowd. I know I'll be hoarse after the game and my hands will be raw.

How was Freddie's initial reception? As far as I know this was his first trip back here. I was hoping to catch the start of the game during lunch, but because of the rain delay I had to miss it.

I ended up seeing from the 5th on which was better anyway.

The Sox went out and just won this game. Floyd pitched his heart out. The last two innings, the Tigers had his fastball zoned in, but he gutted it out with a great breaking ball in the biggest game of his career. The throwing error was unfortunate, and an example of his inexperience, but he pitched like a veteran.

Gavin Floyd is a keeper.

A key to this game was the Tigers starting an inexperienced catcher who let a lot of pitches get past him. The Tigers had four wild pitches, and even move balls got past Ryan when there was no one on base. Wise walking and stealing set up the tying run. Then came the Tigers bullpen collpase and one of the special moments of the 2008 season -- the first fair ball the Sox hit in their five-run inning. Had Garcia come out of the game with a 2-1 pitch instead of a 1-1 pitch, he would have picked up the loss.

I don't know if the Sox have enough to get to the postseason. Danks is going to have to give the Sox what Floyd did today. The Sox are going to have to get to Blackburn, which is smore likely at the Cell, although the weather should make it a pitchers' night. The Twins will be more motivated than the Tigers (perhaps a bit tighter, though), and they won't be starting a rookie catcher.

We have to have all of our horses ready tomorrow...everyone but MB and Floyd need to be ready to go tomorrow. You can't worry about what happens when you get there until you're actually there. Tomorrow will be a game of quick hooks for pitchers who can't get it done because you can't afford to get down in this game. Unless it's a blowout, we will almost certainly see Jenks, and probably Thornton, Dotel, and/or Linebrink. If Danks can give us 6+ tomorrow, that bodes well for us.

In Danks We Trust!

I have mixed feelings on Wise. He is a good contact hitter, has good speed, and can get a bunt down but his bat has cooled off recently (2 for his last 19) and he looks lost out in LF. I'm not just talking about today's game either. Wise's routes and reads on flyballs have been below average since he has been inserted into the starting lineup. Swisher will have much better defense, take more walks, and will likely be jacked for that blackout crowd of rabid Sox fans. However, Swish has been mired in a terrible September slump and his power numbers have been almost non existent lately. I don't envy Ozzie Guillen. I could go either way on LF for tomorrow's game but my gut tells me to go with Swisher.

That said, GO SOX!!

I am just grateful that Sox ran into a team that was arguably even more poorly coached. Thanks you very much, Galarraga, Bobby Sea, Gary Glover, and Catcher-whatshisface.

Of course, Floyd proved huge. Fielding mistake aside, he did as well as could reasonably be expected of a quasi-rookie pitching on a 3-day rest again (fastball a tick slower, but the slightly fatigued arm actually helped his breaking ball, I thought) in a high-stakes late-season game.

Beyond nice to see Sorialexiano snap out of his September doldrums. Of course, the offense still can't put "two halves" together, as it were, in a game of any significance: mustering only 2 singles off Freddy Meatball in 5+ innings was embarassing given the talent of the line-up.

*spoiler alert*

Negative: Jim Thome. Awfulness personified, at least right now. Ozzie giving him too little rest throughout the season, coupled with a minor nagging injury or two, resulted in knuckleball-speed bat.

Negative: defense still sucks. Wise can't catch a semi-difficult Fly-ball (to be fair, during summer that ball is a HR). Uribe can't go to his left. Cabrera - just being his borderline lackadaisical self. Floyd's Richard impression. AJ in the Victor Martinez/Mike Piazza territory......... To be perfectly blunt: IF SOX WANT TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES, THAT **** IS UNACCEPTABLE, AND IT'S ONE OF THE REASONS WHY THEY DIDN'T HAVE THIS DIVISION LOCKED UP 10 DAYS AGO.

Finally... Funny how much better Dotel, Linerbink and Co. are when they are pitching with a lead & bases empty. Ozzie, take notes.

On tomorrow's agenda: Beat Blackburn into submission in the first inning via line-drives ala Zack Grienke back in July. In the meantime, Johnny Danks needs to put up a few scoreless frames early on so Blackburn doesn't have time to catch his breath, to make him understand what "no margin for error" truly feels like. So, yeah, umm, git 'er done, playas. :bandance:

Not that he hasn't displayed it before, but that's just another reason to support that Buehrle is one of the biggest team-first gamers in baseball.

Adele, are we going to win the division by 5 games???

Would have won the the division by at least that much with a decent September..... but for Quentin deciding to break his hand without asking for my permission first.... coupled with Ozzie/Greg Walker's Manuelian inability to get the best out of the team in crunch time....

I'd like to be able to say that I regret believing that Sox weren't mental midget chokers that they've clearly revealed themselves to be lately... but ultimately I can't - as I still believe in the overall talent superiority of the team over just about any squad in baseball, including Minnesota.

Having lost the bet, I'll be more than happy not to post on WSI ever again (once the season is over), especially if the team ends up making the playoffs + WS title. All good things come to an end :)

Go Sox.

The best break to happen to us in about a month was Freddy having to shut it down early. He was really on his game, and his splitter was diving. I don't wish injury on anyone, but I would be lying if I said that I was nothing other than thrilled to see him leave. Then, sure enough, we lit up that bullpen for 7 runs, including those 2 huge insurance runs that allowed us to save Bobby for tomorrow.

Big kudos to the offense, too. Buehrle gave up that early run Sunday, and the offense got 3 back in the next half inning. From there, he cruised. Floyd battled his heart out today, had to rush a throw with Granderson running, and they got an extra run out of the error. The offense responds the next half inning with a 5 spot. Seeing the offense reward good starting pitching the past 2 days has to give Danks a good feeling going into tomorrow.

Not wanting to get ahead and look to next year before this season is over ... but Floyd's performance is an example of why the Sox will be tough next year. With Floyd, Danks, and Buehrle you have three very good starters. The key in the offseason is to get two more reliable starters (we have to get rid of Vazquez).

That's the rule I was thinking of, pitcher coming in at a disadvantage in the count, not the one who throws the last pitch of the AB. Floyd's scary curve was not there for the first few hitters, showed up later in the 1st inning, then went away in mid-game. When he's on, which is often, he's very nasty.
