From what I've heard from the "experts" (and this time I agree)... the key to today's game against DET is to take the lead early. Any excitement DET has for playing spoiler will be deflated, and they'll be resigned to packing their bags for a nice winter vacation.

If DET takes the lead early, they may smell blood and say "to heck with it, lets win this thing!"

I'm not saying the game is absolutely decided by the 3rd, but it very well may be decided with a 3-4 run lead.

When is it ever in a team's strategy to score second? Or late insead of early?

You know, I can almost see Leland reverting to his angry, spiteful old man ways and warming up Verlander and Galarraga in the 2nd, regardless of the score.

If you score more than them wouldn't that also include not giving up more than them?

My key to the game would be to end the game ahead of the other guys.

Well, all obvious strategies aside, I think the key is if we score early, the fire will be take out of DET. If its tied or we're behind late, DET will have a lot more fire to win the thing.

Exactly. That's what happened yesterday as well, when we jumped out to the lead. The rest will take care of itself.
