When is the latest in the season we've ever clinched a playoff berth? It seems that with the Sox, the end of September has always been either we're out of it, or we're already resting after clinching.
A lot of teams clinch in the final series of the season. Nothing wrong with that at all. Heck- that's part of the fun of baseball, an exciting race.
I predicted awhile back that we clinch on the final day of the season. I was happy to have been able to even say something like that months ago... and still am now.

In 2005 we clinched in our fourth to last game at Detroit, day game if I remember correctly.

In a related topic, have we passed the latest day in September since 1906 that both the Sox and the Cubs were in first place?

In fact, the Sox haven't been in a dogfiight for a playoff spot this late since the infamous debacle in Kansas City against the Athletics in 1967. It was a 4-way race with Boston, Det and Min, eventually won by the Red Sox. In those days it was one division in the A.L. and N.L.
