Something tells me the Rays are going to come out there with some kind of fire, they just beat the Red Sox after being tied and all the pressure in the world being on them. Now they regained the lead and won't look back. Look for the sweep and some inspired baseball by the Rays.

Then again I could be completely wrong and the twins could shove all my words back in my mouth like usual.

Sox have played .500 ball this month. Not great, but not bad considering the state of the pen and the injuires. When you're in the lead, all you have to do is maintain it. Hell if the Sox go 6 and 5 the rest of the way, the twins would have to be 8 and 2 to mach it.

Let's look at another way, if the Twins go 2-2 vs. Tampa, and take 2 of 3 from us in the Hump Dump and swept the Royals at the end of the year, we'd only have to go 5 and 2 against the Royals and Indians to win the division outright and wouldn't even have to play the game against Detroit...and I don't see the Twins taking 4 of 7 against us and TB combined.

Also, mark it down that the Twins are going to get beat Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Thursday is up for grabs. And yes I said Sunday.....Liriano is going to get beat by Frankenstein.

I'm never scared of a team with nothing to play for, playing their last series. We'll see a lot of call-ups playing, and probably not much fire. I mean- the Sox have been in this position themselves recently.

Everyone wants to go out with a bang, but at the same time it must be nice to be working on your golf plans ;)

Indians = .500 team. Let me remind you...the Tribe haven't won against us at U.S. Cellular Field yet this year. We're 6-0 against them at home. Bank on at least 1 win in the last series of the season. We even beat Cliff Lee at home. Albeit wasn't him that we beat, it was Borowski.

The Twins could very easily be leading the division by 3 games themselves at this point.

They have pissed away win after win in the last 2 weeks. I don't think they'll win this thing, but if they are within a game going into that series in the dome, it will be tums time.

They stink but the Sox just might out stink them in the last week and a half.:whiner:

The Twins could be comfortably in first right now if Neshek doesn't get hurt, or if they kept Johan, or if they kept Torii, or Gardy didn't insist on making stupid decisions because it's "by the book", or if they would have gave up on the Gomez experiment last spring, or if they hadn't let Seattle walk all over them, or if Nathan hadn't suddenly fallen apart, or....

Alot of crap has gone wrong, it's amazing they're still hanging in there.

The reason the Twins aren't leading the division is because they aren't as good as the Sox. They only won two of nine games in Chicago this year. And, of course, since August 21, the Twins have only once won a game scoring less than seven runs, and that was a 6-5 game. Tonight the Rays' bullpen, even Chad Bradford, who allowed two inherited runners to score, was as bad as the Twins bullpen has been.

I was hopting Everett would get the bunt down and kill the rally by giving up an out, but they took the bunt off, apparenlty, because he doubled in the go-ahead run.

The ninth inning fell to form, really. Sacrifices are bad. Don't, just don't. Intentionally walking hitters just adds to the other team's run total.

Alot of crap has gone wrong, it's amazing they're still hanging in there in first place.

Oh by the way, TB just coughed up 5 runs in the 9th with a 2-run lead to protect. Boston coughed up a win yesterday. Seems like all the contenders still chasing a playoff spot are having bullpen problems. Doesn't make it less frustrating as a Sox fan, I know, but it is what it is. I would still rather be us than the Twinkees at this point.

You're right. It looks like everyone but the Angels has major bullpen issues at the moment. And they haven't been tested.

In fact, among the possible playoff contenders, who do you want closing a game right now --- Wheeler? Papelbon? Jenks? Nathan? Rodriquez? Lidge? Whoever the Mets are using? Wood? Whoever closes for LA, Saito?

This is an interesting point. It could be all the fatigue/wear and tear of the long season catching up. Combine that with the pressure innings of a tight pennant race and it is starting to eat away at the bullpens of these contenders (Sox included). An argument could be made that the Angel bullpen is in the best shape because they haven't had a "must win" game in months. They've been loosey goosey for a while now which definitely helps a pitching staff.

You didnt see it. It was pretty funny really.

Everett squared to bunt. The infielders charged in, then during the windup he went back into a normal stance and sliced it over the LF ers head. (my keyboard is acting a little funny, I cant use apostrophes or the arrows to edit this, so cut me a little slack) I was absolutely pissed that Gardy pinch hit Everett for Kubel, and I am almost as pissed that this manuver worked, because it reinforces this kind of decision making.

Wonder if all these bullpens falling apart is at all related to testing these days? Just a thought. Maybe a little HGH helps them bounce back in the past? Just seems weird that they all are falling apart this year.
I know at the halfway point the sox bullpen was among the least used so they should have as much in the tank as anyone else.

5-0 Rays, hopefully they'll burn through the Twins pen tonight.

The Twins bullpen has been burned through for at least a couple of weeks because Gardenhire has been in desperation mode. But the bullpen is getting a lot of innings from September callups. They have four lefties in the bullpen.

The Twins occasionally get good outings from relievers, but overall, the team has been giving up a lot of runs. They could give up double-digit runs tonight for the second time in four games, and the two games in between, they gave up six and eight runs.

We can always use Antonio Alfonseca's hand instead, that's what I'm posting when this one's complete. :P

The Bucs lead the Vikes 7-0 now, by the way.

 Good one, Heather!

So even if the Twins kick a field goal....

I think most of us hear it,but unless our Hitless Wonders get their
heads out of their asses and come back to beat the damn Royals
it's back to where we started the day...which ain't bad but for
chrissakes, take bleeping advantage of what the Rays did earlier !

It's not back to where we started the day; the magic number has dropped one more. Granted, that's not as good as two, but it's better than none.

I love the fact that the sox are in first but this baseball is ludicrous. I won't have such a light reaction to them losing tonight.

The Sox are making it extremely hard on themselves to win this division. This week was our chance to know Minnesota out. They played a very tough schedule this week. Now we are the ones who have to fight for our lives. Especially if the division will be decided in the last three nights of the year. The Twins are playing Kansas City, the Sox are playing the Indians (Cliff Lee included). This smells like trouble.

Red Sox after being tied and all the pressure in the world being on them. Now they regained the lead and won't look back. Look for the sweep and some inspired baseball.:)

While I too want them to play some inspired ball, they cannot sweep the Twins due to that miraculous comeback by the Twins Thursday night.

hehe I've never heard baseball referred to as "ludicrous." I don't disagree with anything you've said here, but it's a war of attrition at this point. Any way the magic number decreases is good.

Oh, I do disagree with the statement that the Sox are fighting for their lives. They are the ones in first; it is the Twins who are fighting for their lives.
