Bases loaded, one out. Looks like it'll be a half game lead after the first game. We have to hope that the O's can win the second. Guthrie is going I think, so that won't be that bad.

I'm not going to panic yet. The Twins faced a couple of pretty bad pitchers in the double header today and the O's had been playing poorly. We still have games in hand against them even if they tie us today. We just need to take care of business.

Thankfully Tampa has to play meaningful baseball next weekend, as they won't have the division decided by then. Let's hope the Rays can chink the Twins to death like they've been doing to pretty much everyone this year.

Agreed. Our team's inability to take charge of the division when the Twins were flailing could cost them a playoff spot in the end. If they only had won an extra couple of games, this would've been much more comfortable.

Yeah, I saw that on gameday. I thought they never made a fundamentals error.

So, the Twins have 1 hit in 3 innings against Radhames Liz. Isn't this the same Radhames Liz against whom the Sox struggled, causing most of WSI'ers to proclaim the Sox suck, Walker should be fired, etc?

The White Sox didn't struggle against Liz. He gave up a couple of runs and couldn't get out of the sixth. That usually leads to a loss, but the Sox pitching wasn't there that day. Liz walked five and gave up three hits in 5.1 innings. The Sox scored two runs against him. He was difficult to hit because of his inconsistent control. Since he came up in June, controlhas been a big problem. When he throws the ball over the plate, he's been getting hit hard. When the walks a lot of guys, he usually gives up fewer hits.

The Twins are having much less success against Liz than other teams have had this season. Through four, Liz has only walked one and surrenderedtwo hits. Perhaps he will have a rough fifth inning to make up for his good start. Maybe he won't get out of the sixth. He has only pitched into the seventh once this year.

Certainly, the Twins are going to need to score at least seven runs to win today. They haven't won a game scoring fewer than six runs since Aug. 21.

The problem the Twins are having today should be apparent. Obviously, they can't hit weak pitchers they have never seen before.

It should be noted that Radhames Liz, coming into today's action, had never pitched more than 6.1 innings in a game. Although he has been unscored upon in three outings in his career, all were as a reliever. Today, he is starting his 19th major league game. This is clearly his best start in all respects -- most innings and so far fewest runs, fewest baserunners and fewest walks (tied with shorter outings).

Funny thing, though, when I was looking his up, I was shown to be wrong about the Twins never having faced him before. If the Orioles hold onto this lead, it will the second win for Liz over the Twins this year. His first major league win came against the Twins in June.

I don't think Liz is a consistently good pitcher. I think he's a pitcher who can pitch well on occasion.

Liz should have stayed in to go for the complete-game shutout. It's mid-September. It isn't like the Orioles are trying to get the most out of him in a heated pennant race. He may never get another chance at a major league shutout.

Ah yes, a voice of reason. So good to read. I watched part of this game yesterday. It is by far the best Liz has pitched all year. I don't think any lineup would have gotten to him today. All of his pitches were at least B+ today.

But the second best outing he had was against the Sox. Had more to do with him than the Sox, IMO. He is a young pitcher with talent who is still learning how to pitch in the majors. With his talent, he will have his moments. Let's just be thankful that one of them came yesterday!
