I was speaking of this series specifically, if the Twins lose even 1 game at home against the royals they have serious problems. When the Twinkies visit the Royals I expect the royals to win 2 of 3 thus negating the damage done over this weekend.

I just don't see how the royals are supposed to beat the twinkies at home.

KC has a shot today. They can use Soria for an inning or two but after they burn him up, their bullpen is going to get thin. I'm hoping the Twins have to go to Bonser or Bass in this game.

I just picked up this game with the Royals just taking the lead against the Twins' bullpen. Certainly Soria will be coming in to try to nail down the save. The Royals seemed to use the same strategy the Twins have been using on the road -- saving their closer for a lead to minimize, if not wrest, the homfield advantage on the road. The Twins do that with Nathan in extra innings, and it wasn't successful on the last roadtrip. Perhaps most teams do that now. So far it looks to be working for the Royals, whose secondary relievers shut down the Twins to allow the offense to score to set up the Soria save.

The Twins have been unable to win close games. Sox fans complain about how bad their team looks, but the Twins has establshed losing close games as a trend. The bullpen has been blowing leads, and the offense and defense has been failing in the clutch. The last game the Twins won were there was a save opportunity involved was the 6-5 win in Seattle, where the tying run was thrown out at the plate after a two-out single in the eighth.

As a Sox fan, I hope that trend continues, today -- I hope they aren't due to pull one out -- and at least through the end of the motnh.

More interesting to me than the fact the Twins lost is how they lost, and the fact that the loss might have been predictable when the Twins went into the late innings having scored only two runs. The Twins have now lost the last eight games when they have failed to score at least seven runs. That goes back to the 6-5 win in Seattle on Aug. 27. They have lost the last 11 times they have failed to score at least six runs, going back to their last extra-inning win, a 2-1 vitory in Anaheim on Aug. 21.

The Twins pitching has turned in some good performances in that time, and has been good at holding non-Seattle teams down when they score a lot of runs. Overall since their last extra-inning win, they are 7-12. That covers a poor roatrip and a .500 homestand. But the bullpen and often the starters and the defense hasn't been there when their team isn't scoring.

People -- a lot of people -- say the Sox can't win unless they hit home runs, and with pitching being stronger in the postseason, the White Sox are doomed for failure. Forgetting that this ignores the fact that the White Sox did hit some home runs in the 2005 postseason, these people seem conspicuously silent on the problems the Twins have been having when they don't score at bunch of runs.

I don't know who is going to win the Central. The Twins go to Baltimore, which a week ago walked in four runs in an inning to the A's. There was a bases-loaded walk earlier in the game for a total of five on the night. Sometimes the Orioles hit. Sometimes they don't. The Twins could have a good weekend there after their .500 homestand to below .500 teams in their own division. Of course, the Sox need to win this weekend.

In the next trip to Cleveland, it looks like the Twins will face Lee in the final game of the series. The Indians pitching has been good enough, that the Twins mght have some trouble there before heading to Tampa Bay. After that, they finish the season at home.

But this last week has shown that you can't just pencil in four or five wins during a six-game homestand for the Twins this September.

Twins only have 6 home games left. 3 of them are against the Royals, 3 against us. With today's game, it's fair to say that KC can indeed beat Minnesota. I just hope we don't have to rely on the Royals to do our dirty work in the final 3 games of the season.

Gardenhire said he was looking to go 7-7 on the last roadtrip. Instead the Twins went 5-9. I'm sure 3-3 wasn't what the Twins were shooting for on this homestand.

A lot of Sox fans are looking at the the next trip to the Metrodome as games the White Sox can't win. They look at failures they see in the Sox as evidence. They look at the Twins as a team that can't lose, especially at home. Here's the thing. Go ahead and complain that the Sox can't be a playoff team because Nick Swisher is hitting below .230 and they dno't have a fifth starter. Go ahead and lament the fact that the Sox only score when they hit home run (ignoring they lead the league in home runs hit). But have they been watching the Twins lately?

Not that I'm making any predictions.

This is an excellent point. A lot of us look at that Metrodome series and say "please don't get swept" based on a number of things. 1) The Sox historically and recently don't play well on turf, especially at the Metrodome 2) The Twins took 3 of 4 from us there the last time we played them there 3) The Sox are pretty mediocre on the road in '08

However, the Twins were pretty hot when we played them last time and we still could have split or taken 3 of 4 from them as we gave away 2 of the games. The Twins bullpen has been much worse lately and they've started to show some chinks in the armor. If the pitching matchups remain the same, we should miss both Liriano and Slowey in that series. I don't think it is out of the realm of possibility that our Sox take 2 of 3 in that series.
