Which would you rather see: winning a horrible division with 82 wins or getting 95 wins and finishing out of the playoffs?

Obviously I take the other route but we are walking a very thin line. I am not saying that I am worried or think the sox are done I am just saying the Sox need to show some consistency right now. At least a sign that we are ready for october baseball.

The Sox suck at the moment. Nobody denies that, and everybody wants them to play better. But the Twins suck more, and THAT'S what matters. It'll be a different story in the playoffs, but what matters now is staying ahead of the Twins, and that's all that matters.

We need to have this clinched by next Saturday or things will get real dicey. The Twins will get 4.08 ERAd Gil Meche on that Sunday, while we would face Cliff Lee on Sunday and Armando Galarraga on Monday and then Slowey or Liriano on Tuesday. Even if we were to win a battle on that Monday or Tuesday, it cost us the war by having to go into the playoffs with an unset rotation and a taxed bullpen.

Let's take 2 out of 3 in Minnesota and make all of that academic.

Maybe... There's apparently an election coming up (this is news to me :dunno:) that makes my job incredibly busy during October, but I would gladly put my employment on the line for a chance to see a postseason game beacuse a) I don't think they'd fire me anyway and b) I don't really like my job.

I've got a dilemma. If the Sox are lined up to clinch it on Friday, I'm also set to call a high school football game that night. I don't wanna miss the division clincher like I did in '05 because I was in school when it happened. If the Sox lose two in Minny, I won't have to worry about it, but I don't want that to happen either. I guess you can't have everything.

There's always a slight chance we sweep up in the Baggie Dome, and then you can sit back, relax, and not have to strap it down while you're calling that HS football game Friday night.

There are 6 games left for each team.

The schedule should show the game with the Tigers on the last day of the season. It doesn't because the game is "if necessary."

In one sense, it gives the Sox one less game to reduce their magic number and requires the Sox to finish two games ahead of the Twins by the end of the Cleveland series. On the other hand, it is a game the Sox haven't lost, a sort of safety net of a game that they will only have to play in a second-worst scenario.

The Twins are probably confident they will win Tuesday night. Regardless of the pitching matchups, the Twins generally win the first game of the series as opponents adjust. Hopefully the Sox will be able to adjust to the lighting and the other unique difficulties that go with playing in the Metrodome. But their hitters have been going well. Their bullpen is well rested, although perhaps overextended for the month. The starters are going on regular rest, although they may have been overextended for the season. But even if the Twins win the first game, they will still be two losses down.

The Twins are the desperate team here. The last time the Sox went into a series against the Twins with a 2.5 game lead, the Sox swept, building their lead to 6.5. That series was in Chicago. I don't expect the Sox to sweep this series, but I don't expect them to be swept either. Whatever happens, winning that first game would be huge for the Sox.

The Sox HAVE to take 1 game in Minny at the very, very least. That makes them 1.5 up, which is enormously important especially if we have to face Cliff Lee again. If the Sox take 2/3 then our magic number drops to 1 and it's all but over for the Twinkees.

The pressure is on the Twins. One win in the dome will reduce our magic number to 3 and leave them little room for any more losses in their final series. The Sox have built up a decent cushion here. One victory will put us still in great shape to win this thing with four home games remaining.

If I'm doing the math right, the magic number for the Twins is 10, double what it is for the Sox.

That means if the Twins go 6-0 the rest of the way, the Sox would have to go 3-4 (including Detroit) to miss the playoffs. If the Twins lose just one game the rest of the way, the Sox would have to go 2-5 to finish second.

Let's say the Twins go 4-2 and finish with 88 wins. The Sox would only have to win two to force a play off. Three wins and we're in.

Well its a good thing you were just counting on numbers instead of actually being upset over losses against easy teams....

Yeah at this point, its not looking like anything other than sitting in a chair watching the others play ball into October.

Everyone in contention still has a Magic Number, it's only really talked about when a team is close to clinching. It's just the combination of wins and losses it would take one team to mathematically finish ahead of another; the Twins Magic Number is now probably something like 5 or 6.

Well, it's not even close to being over. The Sox are down 4 with 2 ABs left against a really bad bullpen. It wouldn't be the first Sox comeback against Cleveland. I'm glad the Twins lost. People should probably wait until the game is actually over before proclaiming a lost opportunity for the Sox.
