The hugging and celebration at the end? I don't think we look back from here.

This is ours, boys. We've got veterans that are at the end of their career, we've got a pitching staff that is often overlooked and we've got a bullpen that seeks redemption.

Let's take this.

Apart from Jenks, the bullpen pitched great tonight.

If MacDougal and Thornton can pitch like that the rest of the season, the Sox will make the playoffs.

I posted this in the game thread, but it's worth repeating:

MacDougal really pitched well tonight, considering that he had good movement on his pitches and located them for strikes against a good hitting team and with a home plate ump who through that point was calling a tight strike zone. MacDougal's problem always has been his ability to keep his pitches in the strike zone. Given that he has great stuff, if he can maintain the good command it will be like acquiring a second closer.

15 innings always sucks. For the longest time it looked like Walkerball would rear its ugly head. But the bullpen did the job. The Sox hung a lot of pitches in regulation. Both closers also got touched up, which is a surprise. The whole team comes out to greet Thome after the blast, which is always good. Alls well that ends well, and the result is a 2.5 game lead.

I'd put MacDougal before Linebrink at closer, or at least put Linebrink 4th. Perhaps you forgot because you blacked it out, but Linebrink is god awful in the 9th he's given up like 3 or 4 HR's in the 9th this year, 2 walkoffs.

The Sox bullpen came up big tonight, as it did in the last 15-inning game the White Sox won at home on a home run (against the Royals Jenks blew the save in the ninth and stayed in to pitch the 10th, and we had to wait for Konerko to hit a home run in the 15th).

The Sox stuck a blown save on Rodriguez. Confidence wasn't high in the game thread when he came in, but he often makes things thrilling. People will complain that the Sox didn't win the game earlier, but some of those people thought the game was over when the sixth.

The White Sox were down by three going into the bottom of the sixth, against a team many here believe are clearly a better team. The White Sox were down by two going into the bottom of the seventh. Bobby Jenks gave up a home run -- how often does he do that? -- with the score tied in the ninth, and the Sox came back.

Some people underestimate the ability and heart of this team.

Win of the year?

Anyone catch Thome tag home plate and then run away from the team coaxing them to chase him down? LOL! That was funny.

Definitely! This could give them the same momentum that the "Jooooooeee Creeeeedeeee!" game had on our team in 2005. A 2.5 game lead is like a 10 game lead right now.

The best thing about this is that they found a way to win it even after blowing a couple of huge gift-wrapped opportunities earlier. That team's gotta be gassed, but I think the adrenaline from winning that way will offset that.

Let's go for the sweep...It is up to you, Danks and Hall.

AJ is the man. Most sox fans love him, but it's amazing how so many on the Sox web sites don't appreciate him.

Catching day in and day out like AJ does is very rough and would wear lesser men down. It's not like the guy just sits in the dugout like a DH or stands around in the field for nine innings. AJ earns his pay even when he's not hitting.

No, because I'm pretty sure that can play the system (like teams do every year) and name somebody like Sisco or Contreras to the roster, then replace them with anybody in the system, even if they weren't on the roster on August 31st.

SBSoxFan
09-06-2008, 10:34 PM
This was huge. The Sox picked up a game on every team of any significance, most importantly Minnesota, but also on Tampa Bay and Boston for the wild card and the Angels for home field advantage throughout the playoffs.

Chuck Garfien said Swisher was 4 for 40 against Lackey before his game-tying homer. Also, Ozzie said in his post-game press conference that it was "Jim's fault they played so long." :D:

Did you see Ozzie messing with Vlad in the top of the 15th? I was a nervous wreck; Ozzie was having a blast. :D:

Thinking about the injuries this team has played through --- beginning with Jenks, which then probably led to Linebrink's, then Crede, Contreras, and, most recently, Quentin --- this team has just been outstanding!

He does. That post was really speaking to the guy who wanted to see a pinch runner for him in the 9th and the other who said his baserunning was a "concern".

Wow wow wow... that was an absolute bomb, Thome is a monster. That was a great game but there was never a point in the game where I felt the sox were down in the count. When they were down it seemed like they would come back, there was just a different swagger to the team. Perhaps it is because Gavin pitches with such tenacity. Think about it, guy gives up 5 runs and back to back home runs but pitches 7 innings and gets the no decision. Just like the rest of the team his attitude was to keep on pitching.
That is white sox baseball, regardless of what happens; good or bad. They keep on trucking, because Ozzie won't allow them to go down, because the players love the team and the game too much for that to happen.

And they have been doing it all year.

This is a good baseball team. It is no lock - but this team CAN win it all.

Unlike a lot of other Sox teams in the past that certainly had the talent to run the table, this one battles. The '03 & '04 Sox might have had the pure baseball skill to go deep, but they seemed incapable of winning big games like this.

This team grinds and battles. Considering how bad last year was, this one sure has been fun, no matter how it ends.

ESPN just said this is the longest game in MLB history between two first place teams.

Longest in # of innings?

Must be # of innings. This game was actually pretty darn quick for a 15 inning game - only 4 hours to play 15 innings.

This was a huge win. Winning games like this will really put the pressure on the Twins as they are scoreboard watching. They are a young team and they know they have to win when they take the field. In the last couple of weeks, they have not responded well to that pressure.

Just got back from the game!! I came home from Bloomington this weekend for this game and the boys didn't disappoint! Getting to K-Rod was huge, hopefully he falls one short of Thigpen and we can look back on tonight and say we saved a White Sox record, no pun intended.

My Dad was walking around the concourse when Thome jacked the walkoff and almost got the ball but it bounced back into the stands. It would have been amazing if he caught it, but one hell of a game none the less.

That was a great game. I notice and appreciate weird things that happen in a game. Some of this has been said before.

1) The game winning home run seemed to bounce to guy wearing an Angels shirt. That is kinda funny.
2) Vlad hit two foul balls in the same at-bat to Ozzie. That is weird
3) Two of the best closers in the game give up a run in the ninth.
4) Swisher hits a home run against a pitcher that he has struggled with before
5) Uribe tried to hit a ball to left-center field and doesn't hit it well but somehow it bounces in a weird way past Texiera for a double and RBI.
6) This play I didn't like. Rivera hit a ball that looked to be a long foul ball, but somehow he hit it high and it was caught in the wind and it carried for a HR. That sucked but it was weird. The wind was definitely a factor today blowing from left to right. How many flyballs did Dye catch in the right field corner?
7) Bourgeois was called up and didn't make it to the game until late. He could have been used since it was extra innings. However, he wasn't.
8) Well this relates to the DET-MIN game. Ordonez hit the game winning home run. Thus, he helped his previous team. Also, Granderson hit a game timing home run and he is from Chicago.

I could go on I imagine. But why torment you good people. hahaha!

Ozzie caught two foul tips in a row and after the second one he acted like he was gonna toss it back to Vlad...we should think about putitng Ozzie out on the field....

I had a game of my own that I was at and some of the guys on the other team were talking about baseball and one of them said "K-Rod blew a save." I was trying to hold a runner on at second and it took me a second to register "Wait a minute, K-Rod pitches for the Angels...and tonight...THE ANGELS WERE PLAYING THE WHITE SOX!" And I jumped for joy and almost hugged the runner I was trying to hold on. I haven't seen any of the high lights, but the first thing i thought when I saw the Sox won was "Wow, this is kinda like that game in '05 where Crede hit the walk off."

I think a lot of people stayed because it was a fireworks night. However, it felt like no one was ready to give up on this game even when we were behind. It was like we expected the Sox to come back and win (of course we didn't expect that it would take so long).

We need to keep in mind that this is a pennant race. The crowd tonight seemed to sense that and we were doing our best to help the Sox win this thing. I hope from here on out, the fans act like they're the 11th player in the lineup and come out ready to root the Sox on to victory. LET'S GO SOX!!!!

ESPN just said this is the longest game in MLB history between two first place teams.

I heard the qualifier "September-October." There used to be much fewer games between first-place teams, of course. Before 1969, there would have been games between teams tied for first. Now you have three divisions and interleague play. There also has been the World Series, of course.

So prior to tonight, the last longest (by innings, but innings doesn't do justice to the length) would have been a 14-inning game in the 2005 World Series. Bobby Jenks pitched two innings in that one, too.

However, I thought there was an NLCS game that went longer than that.

So, apparently Babe Ruth pitched 14 innings in the last longest longest September-October game between two first-place teams. I wonder if Bobby Jenks ever played Babe Ruth baseball.

The only aspect I can be happy about is the bullpen. What an effort by MacDougal and Thornton. Gavin's stuff looked dynamite as well, it was either a tough Angels lineup or a few mistakes that did him in.

Thome sucks, all he cares about is moving up the HR list. It took a fantastic effort by the bullpen to cover up his bonehead greed in the 10th. I am just glad that he timed 537 in conjuncture with a WSox win... nice of Jim to pencil the team in for that one.

Was at last nights game, and what a way to win. It's a shame my boy AJ had to get caught off third on that grounder, because Griffey's shot to center would've easily tagged him in and saved me 3 extra hours of tension.

For the record, we were about 3 feet from Thome's jack. It was a concourse shot, because it hit the bottom wall of the beer stand. If the medical staff hadn't been standing there, my buddy would've had a chance to catch it. But it hit the bottom wall of the beer stand, then the floor and back in the seats. What a shot. It was definately one of those 'wish I had a camcorder goin' times....

At this point in the season, you'll take a win anyway you can get it.

The Sox did screw up in extra innings, ALOT. But the way this team came back from a 3 run deficit against one of the better pitchers in the AL and then came back against one of the best closers in baseball is very impressive.

One player who seems to be overlooked in all this euphoria over the win is Dewayne Wise. He came through in the bottom of the ninth with a deep drive to right that got the tying run home. He was able to do what Thome and Konerko could not do in the 10th and is not an easy feat vs. Rodriguez. The whole ninth inning rally against K-Rod was a team effort (Ramirez's and Swisher's singles included) and is the hightlight of the game as far as I'm concerned. They showed some guts and grit in that inning.

Thome is not a slap hitter. The reason teams put the shift on is b/c they would rather him slap it to left than swing for a home run because they would be better off with Thome getting a single everytime than a home run the 1 out of 15 to 20 at bats he hits one.

Thome is slow...it'll take him 2 more hits to score. Yeah a hit is better than a out but he is paid to hit home runs. If you're referring to his K in extras, yeah he needed to put the ball in play but it had to be to the OF. The Angels brought in a 5th IF....a weak ground ball wasn't going to get it done. For a guy to shorten up his swing, he likely isn't going to hit a deep enough fly.

He hit a very clutch walk off home run and you paint it like he was trying to pad his stats and it coincidently won the game. With 1 out and no one on, you want Thome swinging for the fences.

You are also ignoring that Thome has almost 80 walks this year. He'll take the base when people give it to him. Get a clue.

That wasn't an ugly game?

The bullpen didn't have a nice outing?

When is the last time Thome shortened up and tried to just put the bat on the ball? I bet I can count them on one hand.

What part do you have a problem with?
You are right on the bullpen, but the game itself was not ugly. Dye was great in rightfield, rest of the defense was very good. It was playoff caliber baseball with a great ending by a guy that you want to hit singles.

All you said was "right on" but this was a particularly great point. Also, the man has a HOF swing that's not going to change now. I give him credit for trying to go opposite field a lot more this year and last. But, in last night's case, it didn't matter what field so taking his natural swing was definitely the best approach. Hats off the Sheilds, plain and simple. He threw some nasty stuff at Jimmy.

And what does "Oskee Wow Wow" mean? From the thread I learned it was something to do with U of I sports, but not being a U of I fan it eludes me. Sounds pretty silly, some kind of fake Indian stuff to go along with the fake Indian chief?:rolleyes:The 2005 Astros were not a 1st place team.Correct. Furthermore, I saw the stat on ESPN again, and they said it was the longest regular season game.

It was really cool last night. I'm on a dinner cruise on the lake. A guy with a Blackberry tells me it's in extra innings. We're slowly heading in at 10PM, and I see fireworks to the southeast. I tell my wife, "White Sox Win, walk-off shot!" An elderly lady from work walks past me as I say it, and she asks how I know. I tell her the fireworks. I head to the Sox fans I know, and a lady calls her mom to find out if it's true. It was one of those amusing conversations. They exchange pleasantries, and the lady asks," How'd the Sox do?" She gives the thumbs up, and says it was a Thome walk-off shot. We saw the whole fireworks show from Lake Michigan. Pretty cool it proceeded a Sox win.

I'd guess that shot was about 410 or so. I could be way off though because it was a true shot.

The report on ESPN radio said it was the longest game in MLB history in September - October between two first place teams.

I guess that really only goes back to 1969 since before then there were no divisions and it was impossible for 2 first place teams to play each other (unless you count 2 teams tied for 1st).

Sorry, really didn't think I was trolling. Can't believe I am the only one that feels this way.
