Purcey's last start at Tampa Bay--8 innings, 1 run, 0 walks, 11 K's

Do that again.

Burnett gave off a lead-off triple. He then struck out Gomez and Span and then got Casilla to ground out to end the threat. That's great pitching right there.

turners56
09-03-2008, 08:25 PM
I just saw this mentioned on mlb.com.

The Twins had faced 7 straight left-handed pitchers before facing Burnett tonight. That's a pretty hard draw if you ask me. Lefties aren't exactly frequent and they've managed to run into 7 straight...

Mauer with a 2-out, 3-run double.

That's what they get for walking Alexi Casilla. What's worse is that Downs came out of the pen missing like crazy. You're bound to get hurt if you have a 3-1 count on Mauer.

He also gave up three inherited runs.
I think that should be a major relief pitcher stat, much like the hold has become. They should post that in the little box that lists a relief pitcher's stats as they come in. A relief pitcher can have a low ERA and WHIP, but really be crap if they constantly allow inherited runners to score.

No, On Demand is no good for this. You can only get the games on Comcast if you subscribe to the Extra Innings package, which costs I think $160 in addition to the regular Comcast fees. For that, though, you get every MLB game that is broadcast, all season long. They're on channels 461 through 470-something.

For what it's worth, pitching coaches don't count the intentional walks in the pitch count, just as they don't count the warmup pitches at the start of an inning.

Definitely true about the Jays at the road. Another point, outside of a few teams, pretty much everyone is tough in the AL. You don't see teams like the Pirate Reds, or Nationals too often.

For whoever wins the devision, it's not going to be easy for sure.

Being the home team is definitely an advantage when the game is close late since you know exatcly how many runs you're playing for. Having a charged crowd on your side in a pennat race is just an added bonus.

Yes sir! That is why I say and I truly, honestly believe getting INTO the playoffs will be harder for us then doing GOOD once IN the playoffs. The thing is though, we got a HUGE homestand coming up. We have gotta go crazy there. I mean, really? How the hell do the Sox think they will get into the postseason if they mess up on this HUGE homestand versus what I hope is the 2008 ALCS match-up and a crap team and a descent, but weak(er) road team. DO IT WHITE SOX!!!!

*EDIT*- Yep, A.L. teams always compete (CLE/DET. Hell! Even KC messed with us and the Twins!!!). That is why I think the Cubs will not win the WS cause they have CIN/PIT in their division and play them a ton and WASH and the ENITRE N.L. West (Minus the D-Backs, maybe).

Good point. If I were a player, I would be so pumped and motivated in clutch situations at home. Everyone on their feet, clapping, cheering, screaming, WANTING you to win it. On the road, it is either silent or you are getting booed/other team getting cheered like crazy for.

He was laboring in the 9th to begin with. He gave up a lead off walk. Rolen hit a rocket to third. And he gave up a single in the gap to a rookie catcher. He's tired.

People put way too much emphasis on pitch count.

I agree that the magic number of 100 pitches that many people is overrated. However the pitches per inning is not. If someone throws 50 "high stress" pitches in the first two innings he's not long for the game. If he throws 100 through 7 with few base runners, he has a solid chance at complete game.

It also depends on the pitcher too...some can throw a lot more than others.

I don't think pitch counts are overrated if they were examined relative to the pitcher and the type of pitches being thrown (stretch vs windup, tense situations requiring your top slider vs. 2 outs and no one on) and looked over how many innings. The focus on pitch count as an absolute number IS overrated IMO.

I agree with you in part. The fact that Slowey apparently pitched the entire first inning from the stretch after hitting the first batter is more important than the fact that he threw a lot of pitchs. And Slowey has gone through more than Litsch even though they have pitched nearly the same number of pitches.

But if Sloowey gave up one run in the first and threw 27 pitches, he is better off than if he had given up three runs and thrown 12 pitches.

Pitch counts don't tell you when a pitcher is gong to be ineffective. Generally, you can see when a pitcher becomes ineffective.

It looks like Slowey might be showing he is ineffective right now..

soxtalker
09-04-2008, 08:39 PM
People put way too much emphasis on pitch count.

What do you mean?

If you mean that pitch counts are not an effective measure of how much a pitcher has left in a specific ballgame -- well, OK, that's probably true. But I always look at pitch counts, because most managers will pull a pitcher as he gets close to 100 pitches. So, if I would like to see them get to the bullpen, that's a good measure.

sox1970
09-04-2008, 08:41 PM
People put way too much emphasis on pitch count.

It's just a fact pitchers nowadays are pulled around 100 pitches. If a pitcher is almost halfway to 100 after two innings, it's notable.

There are pitchers who are pulled after 100 pitches. Most starters don't last 100 pitches anymore because they are knocked out by the offense before that. Generally, if a pitcher is pitching well against the Sox, people get all excited about the pitch count, and he ends up going 110 or 120 pitches.

The situation has more to do with when a pitcher will be lifted, and the deeper you go into the season, the deeper into games pitchers are more likely to go if they are pitching well.

Fans believe pitch counts are more important than managers believer they are. Most managers say that when they are asked about pitch counts.

It's good to see the Blue Jays knock out Slowey (before he readhed 100 pitches even). It's too bad the Jays didn't score more runs, but on the plus side, the Twins bullpen gets more work. Incredibly, in each of the previous eight losses during this roadtrip, the Twins held a lead in the eighth inning or later.
