Does anyone know what happens if we tie the Twins for first place in the division?

Do we play a 162nd game? Or do we go by Head to head record?

If it is head to head, where do we stand right now?? I know we took all 4 from them at our place back in early June, however we recently got swept 3 games at the dome, and we still have a few more there. I can't remember other games though.

Thanks in advance! (Im trying to determine our magic number to make the playoffs)

I believe a tie in the division race = 163rd game. A three-way tie for division + wildcard would involve a tiebreaker. I could be wrong.

Division tie ALWAYS results in an extra game.

I thought you only play a tiebreaking game if it is about being IN or OUT of the playoffs.

H2H is the first tiebreaker to see who gets which spot.
Then intradivision win%
then 2nd half intradivision win%
and then it gets messy....

If two teams are tied and one would be in the playoffs, and another would be out, there'd be a 1 game playoff. Coins are flipped in advance to determine who's be home team.

If more than 2 teams are tied, it gets messy.

163rd game. The regular season has 162 games.

You sure? I thought that if someone gets the Wild Card and someone gets the division there is not a game.

Now you have me confused. I just read your post. I thought it was a done deal, tie = extra game.

I am sure someone will look it up soon...

I have nightmares about a 163rd game in Minny.. :(::(::(:

We need to just win it outright so we don't have to worry about that.

I think you're right. I thought they did away with the 163rd game if both teams are in the playoff regardless and used something like you described above to determine the division winner.

If the Sox win this tiebreaker scenario, can we voluntarily surrender our division title to the Twins and take the Wild Card instead?

We lead 8-7 with 3 more to go.

If you assume a 1-2 outcome in Minny, then we HAVE to finish ahead of the Twins. We have the BARE MINIMUM lead right now, based on that (1.5 - the 1-2 outcome in Minny).

Basically, a one-game playoff will occur ONLY if a playoff spot needs to be determined. If both teams are the leaders in the division and wild card, then there will be no extra game. The teams will be assigned as either the division champion or wild card winner based on tie-breaker stats, starting with head-to-head results.

That sounds right. Isn't that what happened in '05 with Red Sawx/Yankees?

I think there was a possibility last year of needing a 163rd (and 164th) game in the National League for New York, Philadelphia and Colorado - but this was because it was possible that there would have been a tie for the lead in the NL East, and those two 162 game records would have tied with Colorado (who was in for the wildcard). It didn't happen, but it was talked to death.

I wait for the year when every team goes 81-81. That should be fun.

Yes. Yanks won the division, Boston got the Wild Card.

The same thing also happened in the NL Central in 2001, with the Astros winning the division, and St. Louis getting the Wild Card.
