Error by Eric Patterson to start the game. **** face.

Not that I want to get bogged down in a game thread involving two teams other thant he White Sox, but I was disappointed to see Patterson starting at second and Bowen starting at catcher. At least Davis has been a strong defender in center. And Suzuki is a superior pinch-hitter in games he doesn't start. Suzuki was going to have to take one game off in this series anyway.

The A's can play pretty good baseball when they get the pitching. I hope they have it in them the next four games.

That one is on Gardy for not going with his best in Nathan; trying to get by with Crain.:D:

He has a philosphy that as the visiting team, he can gain the homefield advantage in extra innings if he has Nathan in reserve to shut down the visiting team in the bottom of an inning where the Twins score.

It seems that near the beginning of this thread, I pointed out that Suzuki was the best pinch hitter on the A's, and the possible upside to starting Bowen is that Suzuki was available to hit late in the game. Fortunately, Geren and Suzuki didn't make me look bad.

The A's have two injured starters. I hope the young pitchers they have going can keep up the good work through the weekend.

Gardenhire set the goal for their roadtrip at 7-7, which I felt was not very ambitious at the time considering that 7 are against Oak and Sea. Now they may do worse. After starting 2 and 0, they are now sitting at 3 and 5 with three or four late inning losses, a shaky bullpen to think about and some very cold bats.
I like where this is going but the Sox (I say they are 2-2 so far on the trip but I don't want to re-open that debate) are going to have to play well to have a winning road trip. I think they will and a 3 1/2 game lead by the end of it is not an unreasonable expectation.

He has a philosphy that as the visiting team, he can gain the homefield advantage in extra innings if he has Nathan in reserve to shut down the visiting team in the bottom of an inning where the Twins score.

I feel strongly that Gardenhire is overrated (leading off Gomez most of the year; batting Morneau, his best power hitter, fifth for too long just because he didn't want two lefties in a row; sticking with Nick Punto when he's not a good hitter), and I don't think I'd save my best pitcher for a save if I were him, but at least he has a legitimate, arguable reason here.

I Hate (with a capital H) when managers save their closers for save situations only. The point is to win the game, not to rack up saves. If bringing in Nathan in a tie game is the best way to win, then do it. Mike Scoscia is the worst about this, and that is the reason why Rodriguez will break the single season saves record this year.

Ozzie's gotten better about this, it seems, bringing in Jenks in tie games when he's the best reliever available.

The best thing that can happen on a Sox day off is a Twins loss. I think this road trip is gonna kill them. They are so mediocre outside of the dome. If the White Sox dont run away with the division down the stretch they dont deserve to be in the playoffs.....:bandance:

It's not as simple as away and home games. The Twins opponents the rest of the way are below .500, and ours are above.

I think the loser of our division wins the wildcard anyway. And to be honest, I'd rather be the wildcard if the Angels finish with the best record. We match up better with them than the Rays.

I just looked at the Twins game and saw Dan Meyer was starting. Dan Meyer has no business starting a major league game, but with Duchscherer and Gallagher out and the A's general manager never taking this season seriously, I guess it could be worse.

08-29-2008, 10:49 PM

Unfortunately, the A's seem to have settled into a bad routine since they returned from a roadtrip where they ran their losing streak to 10 games. They have been beating contending teams in the first game of a series -- often dramatically -- before losing the next two. By pattern, I mean they have done it agains the Rays, the White Sox, the Twins in the Metrodome and the Twins at home so far. A Mariners series mixed in there, but I didn't factor it in because they aren't contending.

It is doubtful the A's will come back tonight because the promising line-drive-hitting offense present at the beginning of the season has fallen into that "high-on-base-percentage" garbage that Billy Beane loves and the fans hate. It seems unlikely the A's will be able to mount an offense against the Twins lead, although the Mariners had no problem coming back against the Twins.

I hope the A's pitching shows up this weekend, but I'm not sure if there is any pitching capable of showing up right now.

The last blown save by Nathan on this roadtrip was set up by a key ninth error by Punto. If you paid attention to the Twins, you would see they play a lot of sloppy baseball. But when they win, people seem to believe it's the way baseball is supposed to be played. Tonight's was a game they should have won, but they didn't win.

Joe Nathan protecting a one-run lead, gave up a single and hit the next batter with a pitch. Sweeney bunted, and Nathan thought he could get the force at third. Instead, he threw the ball away in a park with the most foul territory in baseball.

The White Sox have not lost a game that way all season, that I can recall.

Wow, this day just got a lot less crappy. Now the Twins know what it's like to lose awkwardly in a visiting ballpark not built for baseball.:)

How many of you were watching the game? Nathan looked awful. He was extremely wild. On the hit batsman, Mauer was set up down and away, and Nathan came way up and in. He bounced several pitches, looking like he was squeezing the ball too tight.

This is his second blown save in a row. I have to wonder if he's starting to develop a little mental problem.

I just replayed the last inning on MLB tv and yes, Nathan looked very bad:smile:.

He could not find the plate at all. The twins looked utterly shell-shocked coming off the field

But the error should have been on the third baseman. The throw was not great, but Harris' attempt to catch it was very poor--he should have backhanded it. And the runner would have been out, by the way.

Just a horrible loss for Minnesota. :bandance:

Well, that shell-shocked feeling can continue for hopefully longer! It would be something if something that small would start them on a huge slide.

I'm not talking about the closer losing his confidence. I'm talking about one error leading to a domino-effect for the Twins where Morton salt's motto kicks in.

Nathan has been a "lights out" kind of guy. He's now blown two in a row, and tonight he looked like he was still shaken by the last one. If that snowballs, they have huge problems.

I wonder if he's just flat out tired? My impression is that he's pitched a lot this year.

I didn't see Nathan's inning (just the highlights), so this is just a general comment.

The last two 'blown saves' were directly tied to ERRORS in the field behind him. Punto made a blunder, and Harris missed Nathan's throw. I don't particularily care for the 'error' stat, but those plays were makable and blown by the defense more than the pitcher.

I guess we'll see what happens in the next game.

Nathan shouldn't of even thrown to third IMO. Even if the throw was good, I don't know if the runner would have been out. It wasn't the best option, he could of easily gone to first. Sweeney put down a pretty good bunt, so I it would of taken a good throw to first to get him anyhow. If this game wasn't played in Oakland, I don't think that second run comes even close to scoring.

Let's also not forget the fact that he gave up a leadoff single and then plunked Emil Brown. Blame the defense all you want, but there's a pretty damn good chance he's blowing this one even if he takes the out at first.

In that case it is a team problem and not just a Nathan problem. And the team is supposed to not make mistakes that lead to losses. Everyone says they don't. But they do.

Nathan didn't look good last night. He only threw a couple of good pitches. He gave up a solid leadoff hit and put the next hitter on with bad control. Sweeney put down a bunt that didn't look good enough to get the job done, but it ended up winning the game because of bad defense. While the throw wasn't perfect, the thirdbaseman should have made the play. But if it had been a good bunt, the A's would have been in great shape to tie the game, at least.

On their current road trip, the Twins have lost four games in which they were leading in the eighth or ninth inning. In the last five games in which the bullpen has been in a close game, the only only save came with the help of the tying run being thrown out at the plate after a two-out hit with a runner in scoring position.

You can look at Nathan and say that but for his defense, he would have saved three games this week instead of one. You can look at his ERA. Although Nathan didn't retire a batter last night, including the one who gave himself up, the runs were unearned (because the Twins didn't give the A's a chance to earn them).

The Twins are losing winable games, not just because they aren't hitting on the road, but because their bullpen isn't holding leads, in part because their bullpen isn't making plays. I thought this was going to be a repeat of the A's recent trip to the Metrodome where blowout losses followed an improbably 3-2 win. Instead, it looks like the Twins aren't playing well.

I hope the A's win again today (and I rarely hope the A's win). But before they beat the Angels two of three to finish their most recent road trip, I don't think they had won a series since taking two of three from the Mariners in early July.

Nathan, though, is kind of weird. I've seen several games that he'll start off horribly, but he ends up bearing down and finishing off games. I know Nathan has been rock solid and "slams the door shut", but I've seen it maybe 2-3 times a year where his focus isn't there until 3 batters into the save.

The Twins are losing winable games, not just because they aren't hitting on the road, but because their bullpen isn't holding leads, in part because their bullpen isn't making plays.

Well, to be fair, I thought their bullpen was wearing out 2 weeks (http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=2009678&postcount=39) ago. I just didn't think it would be Nathan that blew the leads.

*edit* whoops. 3 run bomb by Morneau. No save today. *edit*

How many of you were watching the game?

I listened to the Twins feed on MLB Radio.

I actually found it odd and quite comical what the pbp man (was it John Gordon?) said about Sweeney before he came up in the 9th. He labeled Sweeney as an all-or-nothing power hitter who wouldn't be able to lay a bunt down. Sweeney didn't look like he could hit the ball out of the infield last year, and he's only got four homers to his name this year. My only thought is that Gordon was confused.

Oh well. If they win today, they're 5-6 on the roadtrip. I thought they would go 7-7 or 6-8, so that looks likely.

Go Jays.

It would really suck balls to not win the division this year. We've been in control all year. If we somehow do miss the playoffs, it'll be like one of those heartbreaking games where you were up for 8 innings and end up losing 2-1.

He probably confused Ryan Sweeney with Mike Sweeney, although I don't believe Mike Sweeney has played in a game since the end of May. He's been on the disabled list. Frank Thomas is on the disabled list again. I believe both are out for the season.

The A's aren't playing good baseball and haven't been for some time. The Twins can't feel good about splitting this four-game series. That they beat the Twins three out of seven games in the last couple of weeks is amazing. Of course, the A's beat the White Sox three out of their last seven games against each other, but that includes a loss by Rich Harden, at a time when the A's were a more competitive team.
