OK, the thought behind this event is nice; the Quad City River Bandits (A-ball affiliate of the Cardinals, play in the same league as Kane County), are hosting a "Legends HR Derby" this weekend in Davenport, IA to benefit the victims of the floods that ravaged Iowa and Western Illinois this spring.

This is the best line-up they could assembe?

Kevin Bass - 118 HR, 1571 G = 12 HR/162-G
Jack Clark - 340 HR, 1994 G = 28 HR/162-G
Mike Devereaux - 105 HR, 1086 G = 16 HR/162-G
Darrell Evans - 414 HR, 2687 G = 25 HR/162-G
Pedro Guerrero - 215 HR, 1536 G = 23 HR/162-G
Brian McRae = 103 HR, 1354 = 12 HR/162-G
Ron Robinson = 0 HR... Was a pitcher
Jon Warden, Jr. = ??? Only 1 Jon Warden on B-R.com, and he was also a pitcher, who pitched a total of 37.1 innings and had a whopping 2 at bats in his career with 0 hits.

Got my money on Devereaux. The X in the last name is going to put him over the top.

Heh, but don't overlook the pitchers. I recall an old-timers game at Old Comiskey in which Bob Gibson hit one that bounced on top of the 375 sign in left center and bounced back on to the field. (I was sitting in the second row behind it.) He was given a double but should have had the dinger. Nobody else came close to a HR, as I recall.

And didn't Luke Appling, he of 45 career HR, hit the first HR in the Cracker Jack All Star Game?

Yeah, old-timers games aren't the same as HR derbies, but, once these guys get older, I wouldn't be surprised to see some new homer champions . . .

I got that e-mail from mlb.com.

When I saw the title, I thought, "Wow, that would be so cool to go too. It'd be a long drive, but worth it."

Then I saw the participants and realized it wasn't worth wasting the gas :D:

Yeah I saw this too. The pitchers are going to.....pitch to the home run hitters.

Wow, you guys are tough. These former players agree to participate FOR CHARITY, and you rip on them for not being good enough former players. How about a pat on the back for being willing to do it? I'm guessing Bonds didn't offer.

Plus he was the villain in Silver Streak.

Hear, hear. Couldn't have said it better myself!
