I just noticed that the USA lost to South Korea yesterday (http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/summer08/baseball/boxscore?gameId=629).

Does anybody know who these guys are? I recognize Jayson Nix, who was the opening day second baseman for the Rockies, but sucked. D. Fowler and T. Tiffee also sound familiar. Does the US have much of a chance in this competition?

Some of the younger guys, like LaPorta, Teagarden, Nix, Fowler, and Schierholtz are considered good prospects, but I don't know if there are any elite prospects like the 2000 Gold Medal team had (Oswalt, Rauch, Sheets, Burroughs, etc.)

Matt Brown as been doing well with the Salt Lake Bees in the PCL.

There are several other names that I recognize as being in the PCL with various teams, but off the top of my head I can't remember the teams they are with, I just know that they came through Tacoma and played the Rainiers.

He's now in the Dodger Organization with the 51's of Las Vegas as is Mike Koplove.

Teagarden is with the Rangers organization with the Oklahoma Red Hawks.

Does Gary Bettman run Olympic baseball????

The USA-Cuba game was a complete farce. Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe was left speechless by what he saw

Don't know about 2008's team, but I remember in past Olympic teams we'd bring catchers in their late 30's that weren't able to sign with any MLB club that year. I think Pat Borders was the one in the 2000 gold medal team. I always thought that was interesting, really shows how important the position really is, to need that veteran presence. The 2008 team should've brought Chris Widger with them.
