If so, then the DBacks really missed the boat. The Reds, too, as now they missed trading Dunn at his peak value. For a team with a lot of needs, not very smart moves.

I bet they wish they hadn't traded TCQ. BAM!

Not so fast. (http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8437824/Sources:-D-backs-fail-in-bid-to-land-Reds%27-Dunn)

Jayson Stark says it is a done deal on Sportscenter as we speak. Great deal by Arizona.

I got off the phone with my AZ source and he says it's close to being a done deal

A report out of a Arizona radio station says the D'backs have traded for Dunn, while this (http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080811&content_id=3291023&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb) MLB.com article says the D'backs have indeed claimed Dunn on waivers and are close to acquiring him.

I don't like it for AZ. Dunn has great power numbers, but what AZ needs is an all purpose hitter. They have plenty of guys with good power and bad averages (Reynolds and Young for example) but only 2 guys hitting above .281 (one being Hudson who doesn't give much power). It will help do not get me wrong, but they missed the bus by not getting someone better at the deadline.

But he walks a ton so he will get on base without the homer which no one else on that team does. I though I saw Hudson is out for the year by the way.

He is out, for the second consecutive season. Has he always been this brittle?

There's a thread in What's the Score about this, and I got a text from MLB about the trade. Mods merge...?

I have read reports that the Sox might sign Hudson this off season...

I hope we can get a better 2B...

Dunn has 38 career HR's against the Cubs who could be their first round opponent.

Not bad.

yeah, I like it just becuase Dunn kills the Cubs and it improves AZ's chances in the playoffs

The Snakes got him on the cheap, which is good. I don't know if he'll make that much difference, with his weak RISP numbers, though. Time will tell.

If Dunn is a Type A FA (I believe he is), isn't 2 picks in the draft more valuable then 1 pitcher and 2 PTBNL ??

I don't remember what happened last year, but the play that shelved him this weekend was a pure freak accident, IMO, and not indicative of his general health. It's not like Mike Hampton or Mark Prior that can't play a game of soft-toss anymore without hurting something, Hudson was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

That said, I don't really know if I like the idea of him parading around in silver and black in 2009.

He didn't clear waivers. The Diamondbacks were the ones who had the successful claim.

True. The teams that did pass on him were bottom feeders that had no use for him like SF, PIT, WAS, etc.

Cuz there's a chance the Reds just dump him on them. That would give the Dodgers about 9 OF'ers. I highly doubt that would have happened, but it's a possibility.

Yep, I think teams have learned from the likes of Randy Meyers and Jose Canseco the dangers of claiming...

I don't see how this trade could be viewed as a negative. They need more offense on that team, especially with Hudson done. He walks after this season and the D-Backs get compensation.

With the top of the rotation they have, any offensive upgrade could give them a shot in the NL.

Wrong. There's a big difference between putting in a claim for a pitcher with a large contract that you don't really want and a claim for someone in the final year.

***? You can't be serious...

About time the D'Backs got a power bat...

Too bad they didn't get a guy who can hit more consistently.

I've always been a huge Adam Dunn fan, I want him as the Sox DH if Thome doesn't end up coming back. the trade speaks to how bad the Reds are, they have traded away two of their best talents away and now Brandon Phillips will get pitched around for the rest of the season. God the Reds blow.

The "player to be named" will eventually be pitcher Micah Owings. If he can clear waivers, he'll be sent by the end of the month. Otherwise, it'll be done after the end of the season.
