Just interested in what people think the Sox will do for a 5th starter now.

Hawk dubbed Carrasco as the 5th starter last night, but he has no real say in the matter. Obviously, they have some guys in the minors they can call up and take a shot at it.

Just throwing this out there because someone brought it up to me earlier in the season: What about Dotel as a starter? He goes out there strong with great stuff, he's either going to give up 6 HR's or he going to shut down the other team it seems like. Is it time to move him into the rotation and try to squeeze 5 inning starts out of him? Is this an option if they have no answer by the time Linebrink comes back?

A poll would be easier to answer, but there's too many options and the easiest one is probably Carrasco.

Haeger
Ramirez
Ohka
Broadway
Egbert
Acquisition?

What do you suggest if it were your call?

With Broadway getting called up I would like to see him as a starter and DJ continue in the 7th inning role.

Once Linebrink comes back DJ could be a starter if Broadway is struggling.

Poreda should take Contreras' next start. Interesting that Getz was recalled, maybe Cabrerra will be dealt for a pitcher?

Let Corrasco start.
Jenks, Dotel, Thornton and the Royals guy should be able to handle most of the work. We can't afford to just give away the 5th start

Call up Poreda or Richard for the pen.....or somebody whose having a good year in the minors.

I don't think Dotel could start. He's best suited for his current role. He couldn't maintain that velocity for 6 innings, and hitters would figure him out.

Haeger or Broadway are the best options. Horacio Ramirez has prior starting experience (though not necessarily good).

If Linebrink was healthy, or Masset was still on the team, I'd say give Carrasco a shot, but I really think moving him out of the bullpen to make him a more than likely since he's been one his whole career, mediocre 5th starter and messing up a depleted bullpen even more, would be a mistake. Obviously I'm not making out the checks and it hurts that this injury occurs after the trade deadline, but as long as JR is OK with taking on some money, I think they have to go after Byrd or Washburn.

Although he's valuable as a long reliever, Carrasco is my pick. He looked really good last night.

The story at whitesox.com says Ramirez is the likely replacement, but they've been wrong before.

I just heard Broadway was called up, although the source isn't great.

Richard was the best they had a Triple-A and he was terrible. Broadway is BAD and Haegar is a project. We don't know if Poreda is bad and in the Sox system that puts you at the head of the class. I know chances are really good that he isn't ready, but desperate times call for desperate measures.

Carrasco has been valuable in the role he's in, I'd rather move him after all other options (i.e. Poreda) have been exhausted.

Javy Vazquez is the fifth starter.

Poreda is in Double A. That doesn't mean he can't be called up, of course, and I imagine he will be after September 1 for a look-see. But I've always been against rushing players up. I've seen a lot of guys get called up too early, get shelled, and never be the same again. If Poreda is the real deal, I think it's best that he maybe come up late next year.

I think Carrasco will help the team more in the bullpen than every fifth day as a starter. Fifth starter will be "Chuck Anduck".

I can't see picking up anyone via trade now. Yankees are also desperate for starting pitching and would be able to claim anyone of use before the Sox could get a crack at them.

They need to get lucky, pretty simple...

At least Jerry will be forced to open the wallet for a decent end of the rotation type in '09 because I don't see anything on the horizon in the system, or Kenny can work his magic!

I've heard a rumor that they might put out a claim on Byrd or Washburn.

I think Carrasco deserves a shot, but I would rather have him as long relief since he's been great there.

More like an average number three, but what's the use in arguing?

I don't think Dotel has enough variety in his effective pitches to be an effective starter. He came up as a starter with the Mets and was a spot starter in his first two years in Houston. I could be wrong. Wilbur Wood moved from successful closer to ace starter, and he had just the one pitch. But Dotel, I believe, doesn't have one pitch good enough to get him effectively through the lineup more than once.

I wouldn't advocate bringing up a pitcher I have never seen pitch from the minors. I have to trust the judgement of the Sox. Some guys with great minor league stats aren't effective when they come up and some with unimpressive stats look great at first. The A's didn't bring up Gio Gonzalez, regardless of his stats, until he developed another pitch.

Can't hurt to give Carrasco a shot at it. Can't do much worse than Richard. If that doesn't work, try Link, Broadway, or just make a play at someone on the waiver wire.

Any word on the status of Freddy Garcia? I thought he was going to be available around this time for a team to sign for the stretch run. I haven't really been following his rehab.
