Brandon Allen was promoted from Winston-Salem to Birmingham a few weeks ago and actually has improved his numbers facing AA pitching.

Obviously we can all look up his stats.

But what do the scouting reports say about him?

How does he look in person, at the plate and in the field?

Do you think he could be ready to play 1B in the MLB to start 2011?

Any info is always appreciated.

Frater,

I have seen him play I would say 8-10 times. I am not a scout nor anything close but thought I'd weigh in. Also I believe Baseball America had a write up of him in the Prospect Handbook ... not that Baseball America is the complete authority but it's interesting information.

He improved this year which merited the promotion. This was a very very raw prospect when they took him, an athlete, a guy who played football. He finally is showing signs of understanding the strike zone and is beginning to figure out what pitchers are trying to do with him. He has seen a fair amount of playing time at the end of spring training games the last two years (garbage time basically) but it shows he is on the Sox radar.

My thoughts are he is ok at best defensively, a little stiff at 1B but he does move pretty well for a big man. He looked a little more fluid and filled out this spring. He has a bit of an uppercut swing, not unusual for such a big guy.

I would say he is still a longshot and has a long way to go. He is no sure thing (my opinion). If he continues on the improvement path through the rest of this year and next year, he may merit consideration.

However, I would say penciling him into a major league role or even projecting him as a major leaguer is risky.
