With all of his previous jersey numbers (3, 24, 30) All either taken or retired or both (in the case of the #3) What number will Griffey wear?

Please post it here when his jersey number becomes official. THANKS!!

Thanks, Thanks, and Thanks......kinda an odd choice but, jersey number doesn't matter too much anyway.

I figured he'd take something with a "3' in it or something that added up to the equavelent of 2 + 4.

So soon after Erstad brought eternal glory to the number? For shame.

Would be nice to get a playing card with him in a Sox jersey too.

Growing up I had posters and plaques of him and Frank all over my room. I have yet to see Griffey play live. Every time I'd buy tickets to see him at Comiskey he always ended up getting hurt and wouldn't play.

Looks like I'll need to put in an order for some tickets next Tuesday!

No. I don't put players names on the back of my jerseys. Unless they actually wore the jerseys, I wouldn't see the point to having jerseys with their names on them. But because Carlos May wore the number 17, I consider it sacred.

And his birthday is May 17, which makes him a great MLB trivia question in the 'uni numbers' category, too!

True, and you would think he would have requested the number. But I have an autographed picture of Carlos May from 1968, in which he has two complete thumbs and a No. 29 Whtie Sox jersey. May didn't request No. 17. He reported to Sarasota in 1969, and the Sox issued him No. 17 out of the blue.

Possibly, depending on a lot of things. If Thome gets enough at bats to vest his contract, he will be the DH next year. I got a feeling they will try to avoid such an expensive situation and start cutting back his ABs and have him platoon at DH with Konerko.

The Sox will buy out Griffey's 2009 contract option for $4-million and then he is free to negotiate with anyone. He won't be making $16-million next year, that's for sure, but he will be playing for someone.

Funny story about the number drama:

The day after the Griffey trade was made, I went to a tour at the Cell with a group of people and the tour guide told us that despite the previous reports that Griffey was going to let Swish keep #30. Later on that day, I go to Grandstand, and start talking to random sox fan about the trade. I mention what they told us at the ballpark about Griffey taking #17, and the Grandstand employee overhears. She starts arguing with me and going on about how "little the ballpark employees must know, and that she's like the first person they have to tell about those things" because of jersey orders etc. I was just sort of like, "ok, fine, i don't really care, i was just telling relaying what they told us at the Cell....."

That evening, Griffey comes up to bat with #17 on. Bet she was busy fixing all those jerseys that she was "so sure" about.......

Grandstand surliness! Imagine that.

I looooove Grandstand.

I bet the Swisher/Griffey number trade was probably true. However (and I'm basing this on how quickly you could by Griffey 17 t-shirt jerseys), White Sox management probably told Griffey that they've got 15,000 t-shirts with #17 on there, and that he's stuck with 17 for the rest of the season.
