View Full Version : ESPN 890 Boston Red Sox offer Manny to WS for Griffey

Fenway

ESPN 890 in Boston which is a second fiddle to powerhouse WEEI is reporting that with the Marlins deal dead Theo has offered Manny to the White Sox for Ken Griffey and would pay the 7 million left on Manny's contract.

4 PM Eastern can't get here quick enough.

I can't believe people wouldn't do this deal.

If you have to you stick Dye at 1B. You find a spot for Manny. Manny's a HoF player at the tail end of his prime. Griffey is a HoF player at the end of his career.

Therre is no way this is happening. Boston would have to be nuts.

There's nowhere for Manny to play... unless they send Thome with Griffey. Then there's nowhere for Thome to play.

Flight #24
07-31-2008, 01:43 PM
If true, how do you NOT do that? Even if you simply platoon Thome & Konerko at 1B and let Manny DH, that's a pretty fearsome bat to add. And playing for Ozzie, in a new city and trying to impress for FA, I'd think he'd be on better behaviour (at the very least, he wouldn't be annoyed at the team yet, and by the time he got annoyed, it'd be the postseason).

Griffey doesn't have a no trade clause. He was a 10/5 player and had right to veto any trade. Once he became a member of the Sox, he no longer met the "5" part of the 10/5 clause.

Manny wants out. If he's willing to go to Miami, he'll come to Chicago. Konerko is from Boston originally and by going there he'd still be in a World Series race....I see it more likey that he'd end up there than a noncontending team.

Whatever....Boston would still have to be insane.

True, but I think they'd all waive them in that scenario. I thought Konerko was a New Englander (though that might mean he absolutely wouldn't want to play there, I guess), Griffey would have to see the Bosox as a better WS chance than us. And Manny's dying to get out and likes Ozzie.

If you could find a way to deal (or DL) Paulie, and deal Swisher for Street and Poreda (+ more) for Fuentes, the extra offensive production that Manny brings might allow you to do this and salvage some OF defense:

SS Cabrera
C AJ
LF Manny
RF TCQ
1B Dye
DH Thome
3B Crede
2B Alexei
CF BA

The rotation of Buehrle, Vazquez, Danks, Floyd, Contreras is good enough because they only have to go four innings with a pen of:
Jenks 9th
Fuentes 8th
Street 7th
Linebrink 6th
Dotel 5th
Thornton and Logan as LOOGYs.

I think that would be the sickest pen in MLB history.

The Rockies don't know what the hell they want to do as far as buy or sell. Not to mention they are asking for two highly touted prospects because they can get that if Fuentes walks. Why the hell would the WhiteSox want to trade Swisher back to Oakland for Street? That means we traded Gio, Sweeney, Swisher, and whoever else we trade for Street. Seriously, now you've got the best RH hitter in the majors (Manny), the AL HR leader (TCQ), and a guy among the leaders in all the triple crown categories (Dye). There's no better 3-4-5 than that, anywhere.

You've got a pen than can shut down any other team's lineup.

You've got great defense up the middle and at third.

:D:

I think that lineup would be able to support BA as an everday CF.

What the hell are you smoking? Why does everyone thing is will be that easy to trade Konerko? He has had his worst year, might be hurt and has a no trade clause!?! That would be a ****ing awful awful deal. Will someone slap that make believe GM hat off your head please!!!!!!!

I'm just combining several rumors that have been, well, rumored.

I think Poreda + Fields gets Fuentes.

Paulie can be put on the bench. Or on the DL. If necessary, give him a few paper cuts.

Don't you think that hypothetical team would win the World Series?

Interesting. On our favorite rumor site, there's an obscure blog reference saying the Sox might be dealing an OF/DH for a pitcher, and the Marlins were given as an example...

Probably nothing, but Kenny's way under the radar today.

Nothing is right. Griffey is the only one that makes sense, and if the Marlins wanted Griffey, I'm sure they could have matched and/or beaten Masset and Richar.

The quote is "Jeff Blair talked to a source who thinks the White Sox might move one of their outfield-DH types for pitching help."

Translation: "Some guy talked to a friend who had been listening to the Score and heard Steve Stone speculate."

I haven't been able to log on to that site all day. It's his biggest money-maker day of the year, and he obviously isn't equipped to handle all of the traffic.

Where the hell is Fenway at?

It seems as though he likes to just rattle the cage and then run.

They got him through waivers last year or the year before. I am sure they will do it again and it's a big ticket for most teams to pick up, so he'll likely clear waivers and then they can try to trade him.

Those years he still had a LOT of money left on his deal. This time out you can claim him and have to spend a few million for him and then get 2 draft picks for him at the end of the year. Not nearly as easy to get him through this time.

A little off topic but, is that Ichiro in that picture that you have as your Sig??

It looks like him but I'm not sure because it also looks a lot like Benicio Del Toro! LOL!

So did it happen or....
