FINALLY!

Gavin pitched a great game.

Offense was productive.

With a walk and a hit tonight, hopefully Paulie is on his way to an .850 OPS for August, September and October.

Not sure why Ozzie felt it necessary to use Jenks to close out an 8-1 game.

In the biggest game of the year, Gavin Floyd steamrolled these turds.

This game was over after they failed to plate more than 1 run in the 4th.

The Sox are now guaranteed to go into Friday's game in first place. That's a good place to be going into KC.

I'm greedy, though. Let's earn the split tomorrow and go to KC riding a winning streak!

Best thing about this game is that it ensures we leave Minnesota in first place. Great team effort today, I believe a hit for everyone in the starting lineup. Gavin was amazing, and the defense was there. Well done, lets get a split tomorrow!

Gavin was huge.

The defense played well.

And, Quentin's and Alexei's 2-out HR's were huge as well.

And, for all Hawk's talk at the end of the game about momentum, I counter with a quote we all have heard different variations of:
"Momentum? Momentum is the next day's starting pitcher." ~ Earl Weaver (http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/e/earlweaver387691.html)

I hope this is the start of a string of good quality starts by the starters. The Sox needed a game like this from Gavin to get them back on track.

A win tomorrow and the Twinkies are right back where they started on Monday, with four games off the schedule.

Hawk seemed awfully quick to jump to the "Twins are going to have momentum going into tomorrow" talk. Yes, I would love to have Jenks retire the side 1-2-3, but Hawk was making all the momentum talk after the Twins scored 1 run in the 9th. GMAB! I sure hope the players aren't thinking this way.

I mean I guess it could be something for the Twinks to build on...but I'm a big believer that baseball is a game of momentum within the game, but very little carries over between games. I'm not too worried about it.

Absolutely huge win...mammoth like!

The Sox know they'll be leaving Minnesota in first place. Gavin pitched well when his teammates really needed it.

After the way this series began, to get a split would be wonderous.

That was irritating. We won, they lost, they didn't really come close to having a legit "rally" so I don't know what Hawk was bitching about. He is becoming increasingly irritating.

And I am happy that I can strike one name of the "Starting Pitchers to Worry About List" . Now there are only 3 on it.

Last night, I stated the Sox needed to improve their two-out run production. Well, tonight the Sox outscored the Twins 7-1 with two outs. Quentin and Ramirez produced game-changing extra-base hits. That was huge.

Still, quality starting pitching is the key to stopping and preventing losing streaks. Floyd's performance was just tremendous tonight. This is only the third time since July 8 the Sox have held their opposition to fewer than five runs. We need more of that. You can't outslug your opponent every day.

chisoxfanatic
07-30-2008, 11:04 PM
That HR by Alexei was absolutely HUGE! I didn't feel comfortable enough with a 5-1 lead (thank you TCQ for giving us that lead, however).

I'm glad Swisher didn't get hurt when he crashed into the wall making that pretty great running catch in the 8th. He was down for a while, so I thought he was either hurt or winded; but, then he got right back up and started laughing like nothing had happened. Swisher has so much guts. He is a player!

HUGE win, boys! Now go get em again tomorrow and leave right where you started. Don't let the Twins gain any ground!

JB98

Is it me or does Bobby J seem to be a bit rusty?

He hadn't worked in four days, and closers tend to get sloppy when they are brought in to get an inning of work with a big lead.

Jenks looked sharp in Detroit, where he was twice called upon to protect a one-run lead. I look at Bobby's shakiness tonight as an aberration. He was there for us when we needed him against the Tigers. If we need him tomorrow, I have faith in him.

slavko
07-30-2008, 11:16 PM
Whole lotta rationalizing goin' on about Jenks. And woe be unto him who doesn't go along with it. If he's right, he's a very good closer. In 2005 he was more than very good. You do see that with your God given baby blues, right? Look at his BA against and K's then and now.

Yea, I am not worried about Bobby.
This is the 10th time the twins have gone into a game with a chance to go into first place and they have failed yet again..thank god.:D:

The difference tonite is those two out hits, hrs, and Carlos' double was just so clutch. Just saw Carlos on Sportsnite and he had a big ice wrap on his left shoulder..normal ,I'm sure..but it just reminds me how (knock on wood) lucky the sox are to have gotten this out of him this year.
Gavin looked great..cept for his disco era shirt in the post-game interview. I swear he looks like he dropped in straight from the 70's with that hair and all.
He looked very comfortable in the air conditioned dome tonite. That has to feel good this time of year.

Now, win tomorrow behind Johnny Danks and the sox are right on track for a good road trip, believe it or not. Tonite was the biggest game of the year, now tomorrow is.
Just saw on Sportscenter that they were voting on the play of the month between Alexei,Harrington winning the British Open, and some catch by beltran....go Alexei.

Save percentage is the most important stat for a closer. He's 21-for-24, which is solid. In addition, Jenks has ZERO losses this season.

I keep hearin' that Jenks is done. Meanwhile, he continues to get the job done for us. Our bullpen was chaos when he went on the DL. He's our anchor, and a good one at that.
