Good night overall for the Sox offense. Everyone (except one) who had a plate appearance reached base.

Good job by Floyd to work through his overall lack of stuff, work over the bad defense behind him, and give the Sox a chance to come back.

Good job by the pen to keep it close, too.

In the Detroit News thread I mentioned that I liked the Detroit broadcast team. Sure, I'd prefer Hawk and DJ but that's because I'm just used to them. But I think they gave a lot of attention to the Sox.

I had to go run errands but came back and saw that it was top of the ninth, two out, and TCQ up to bat. Watched the events transpire, and made me really happy. Great win at a great time for the team. Let's take another here then take 2/3 in Minny.

Agreed, but one game at a time. Win tomorrow, take the series and remove a bit of pressure for Sunday's game. Win Monday and Tuesday, take the pressure off for Wednesday and Thursday.

Its small steps each step of the way, but no matter the outcome; our Sox are going to give us one hell of a run towards October.

All that and the Twin, Tigers, and of course THE CUBS; lost. (I know, I know. Flubbie obession will be lobbied against me, but dammit I'm SO FREAKIN' SICK OF HEARING THIS IS ONE HUNDRED YEARS!!!) The Sox are playing solid baseball post AS break, the Cubs are treading water yet still we hear about the flamin' "team of destiny" BS. That fanbase needs to come back down to Earth and realize championships aren't won in June and July.

Ah, forget it; the Sox are winning. And that's all that matters. Yeuuuss!

First of all, this game really pumped me up!!

I'm very positive as well, and I'm far from a dark cloud, but I do think that he may have a point. This past week has shown a couple holes that I wouldn't mind shoring up before making a stretch run. The Twins won't go away - they never do (honestly, really it's weird - they never do). It's definitely something to think about.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised to see KW make a move similar to 05. Something that may seem menial, but adds another small piece to shore us up - Something like a 7th inning reliever or comparable.

And I thought Wednesday's win was big.

It wasn't that long ago that people were lamenting the Sox NEVER coming back after the seventh inning. And tonight's game thread was ugly with blame for a loss that posters were sure was inevitable. There was the usual heavy Konerko bashing, and Fields gave up a run on defense before he got the hit to start the rally. There was Masset and Guillen -- always in apparent defeat there is Guillen. There was also Quentin and Dye until two out in the ninth.

Brian26 pointed out in the gamethread that Quentin deserved credit for the two-out, two-strike single that preceded Dye's game winning home run. He's right. At the end, Dye and Quentin were heroes 1 and 2. Cabrera and Ramirez were early heroes. Floyd, for all the posts demanding he be pulled (for Masset?) in the third and fourth innings, had a quality start.

This is a good team that played over some mistakes tonight. At the end, with the slimmest of leads, the Sox had their best defensive team on the field and Jenks on the mound, and the guys made it look easy.

Great win. Keep 'em coming.

Wow -- what can you say. No need to mess with this team too much.
Masset gets a lot of action. He's sort of a "dependable" 1 run every 2 innings or so.
JD and TCQ can hit.
How did Fields look out there?
I think Ozzie will be making that defensive adjustment a lot in the 9th....is Swisher better in the field than Konekro? Or is that extra innings offensive insurance?
Floyd looked like he hung in there.

Well, that certainly was a huge win. I stopped watching in the fifth. It seemed like one of those games where they would just play poorly and limp to the end and take the defeat.

I was watching TV and saw on the ticker that they had closed to 1 down in the 9th, and then on Baseball Tonight they showed Dye up at the plate and said he came through with late heroics, and then show him putting it out of the park. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised.

That is snatching victory from the jaws of defeat. Detroit has to be puking in their wastebaskets in the clubhouse.

Not really a turning point in 2005 though. The Sox led the division wire-to-wire. They were kicking ass well before that game in late May against the Dodgers. I just consider it a memorable comeback victory on '59 TBTC night.

I would guess this is why KW has reportedly been so active on the phones. All the speculation on threads earlier today seemed to be centered on KW going after a starter, but I would imagine with Linebrink's problems, Logan's recent ineffectiveness, etc., that a top of the line reliever would be the key target. Russell would not be much of a fix, even temporary.

Another thing to ponder. The White Sox didn't win the game in the seventh. They tied it in the seventh and remained close enough with two outs (and two strikes) in the ninth to win it. It was Joel Zumaya with the blown save, letting score two inheritted runner before a run of his own came in on an error -- thanks to some great baserunning. The seventh innng turned the game around. Zumaya contributed mightily to his team's loss.

But if you look at his line, he gave up no earned runs in his inning of work and lowered his season ERA to 1.65.

Pitching stats, especially relivers' stats, don't tell you much.

I agree. This game had looked like a loss from the minute the Crede announcement came out. Call up Fields, play like crap, still manage to keep the score manageable and then hammer time.

I had to leave entering the bottom of the 6th to get my sister at the airport. I got back in time to see Thome ground out in the top of the ninth.

The highlights omitted our first comeback, then pretty much downplayed the victory. When the clips were done, the closing remarks were to the effect that "it's not all good news for Chicago. I don't know how we keep winning games like this. Floyd, while off, gutted it out out there. I know that the box score will say he gave up three earned runs, but really only one of those runs should ahve been earned (Fields bobble cost us a run and Quentin threw a ball into third when he should have thrown it into second that would have cost us a run), but all in all a gutsy performance by Floyd. The guys that go out there and keep you in the game without having their best stuff, those are the sorta pitchers you want on your team!! Massett, well, I don't know why he was in there. One of the problems with thinking you can do a better job of managing that Ozzie Guillen is that you don't know what Ozzie Guillen knows.

A couple of hours ago, there were people complaining that Guillen was throwing away the game by not yanking Floyd in the third inning.

There was Masset and Guillen -- always in apparent defeat there is Guillen.Seriously, how many functioning neurons do you think you could find if you did positron emission tomography scans of the Clouds during a game thread? Defcon 5? I'd say 3 maybe.

The Sox are a little deeper than I thought at the beginning of the season ... Carrasco, Richard, Wasserman, Bourgeois, Getz, Fields, Broadway, Richar and Owens ... that covers a lot of positions.

Big victory tonight. :bandance:

Win or lose, the Sox have been playing sloppy ball lately. Maybe they should start Uribe at 3B, Anderson in CF and Swisher at 1B for a while to shore up that defense and help the pitchers out by not making them throw so many extra pitches. The way Konerko has been hitting and the production they've been getting from 3B lately, they won't be losing too much offensively anyway.

They definitely should not hesitate trading Fields if a deal that makes sense presents itself. With the Linebrink/Thornton/Contreras health issues and Logan's recent struggles, KW would do well to bolster the pitching.

Your synopsis is correct in the awesome 1983 classic movie "War Games" however, in the director commentary track, John Badham later admitted that they got it wrong. In real life, the government refers to Def Con 5 as full scale World War and Def Con 1 as "peace". Ok, so I'm a big nerd. Shoot me.

Now, to get back on topic, this was such a huge win tonight. I still have a smile on my face because I thought we were going to lose by 1 stinkin run. Jermaine Dye is right. We definitely stole one. The injuries are worrisome though. We need Carrasco and Masset to step up. I feel more confident in Carrasco lately than Masset. Nick just hasn't been as sharp as he was earlier in the year. We're playing pretty sloppy baseball and still somehow winning games. If we can shore up the defense a little bit and get the bullpen out of this mini funk, things will look really good.

He is our all star, why do people care so much what the rest of the country thinks?Hey, it was just an observation, I didn't say it's costing me sleep. When someone is as good as he is and gets so little attention, that is noteworthy. Can you name another player in the league who is that good and that anonymous? Oh, wait, I forgot . . . You're too cool to care.

Agreed on all counts....right now Uribe/Anderson/Swisher will give us the same offensive production as Fields/Swisher/Konerko...but we get a major lift in our defense...that's the line up I'd go with for Det/Minn. Konerko looks completely lost at the plate...Fields looks like a turtle trying to cover 3rd.

I don't normally agree with the guy, but a while back Dan Bernstein made a comment along the lines of how Jermaine Dye reminds him of what a solid veteran player used to play like before the steroid era turned 35+ year old players into freaks of nature.

JD definitely ''dropped the head of the bat on the ball'' but it still takes a strong man to go oppo at Tiger stadium.
The Ed Farmer replay was classic Eddy...his voice dropped when he said ..''there is a fly ball to right'' then it finally raised above a monotone when it flew into the stands.

Even hawk was not in a stretch mode on that ball. Just too shocking.
But the injuries mean the Sox must get some luck to hang in there and tonites game becomes so huge. The Tigers will be spitting mad and come out smoking. But smoking in baseball does not always work. Sox should be loose but need to play high intensity ball and jump on verlander early..that would take a huge crowd out of it and they may start booing.

There are a few regular season homers that stand out as a sox fan..Jeff Abbotts in Minny, Joe Crede vs Cleveland in 05, AJ's vs the dodgers..but this one might go down in infamy as the biggest in years if the sox go on to win the division.

I just read that Kenny is traveling with the team on this road trip, which is rare for him this time of year.

That said, it seems to me that they feel they need to play Fields more so the scouts can see him play at this level this year. Playing Uribe, (agree is the better defensive option) won't get Josh traded any faster.

I'd forgotten that Josh really isn't a quality defensive 3B

Is that you McCain?

For some reason, JD reminds me a LOT of Baines... Must be the same personality.

My wife and I had the same thought. You almost never hear from the guy off the field, just on the field.

We like JD as much as Baines, and for a lot of the same reasons.

Every game I've watches, yes every god damn one, that the Sox have been behind and I've turned off they have come back to win.

Thank you for your service. We'd all appreciate it if you'd continue doing so. :D:

Good thoughts there. I never put it together, but now that its been mentioned; the two of them do carry themselves in a similar fashion.

After Dye's blast to the warning in right center his first time up, one of the Detroit announcers (Rod Allen maybe?) said it would take a "real man" to hit one out in that direction tonight. Kind of ironic, huh?

I'm surprised that Farmer and especially Hawk didn't think it would go. I sensed it was out immediately, as Dye gave it away with his homer hop.

It was a terrific turnaround on a night when poor play and negative news about the Sox seemed to be heading them in the wrong direction. This was a sweet win.

I missed the last the game last night, but to see the picture of Dye and TCQ high fiving after Dye's blast was a beautiful thing. I remembered though, that besides maybe the Cuban Missle, those two guys are really the only two guys hitting with any consistancy this season. Without them, the last two games would've probably been loses. Hopefully, some other guys get hot over these next 5 games or so.

Just read on "hardball" on chicagotribune that Bill Dye, JD's dad was at the game and afterwards was getting on to a crowded elevator. 3 ladies told him he might not be able to get on to the elevator with his Sox cap. his reply? "That was my son who hit that homerun".

AWESOME

What a thrill for JD and his dad to have that magic moment occur when he is along on the trip.
It is pretty easy to see that Bill Dye did a helluva job raising his son, who is respectful of teammates, and carries himself with great dignity.
So glad that kenny got him re-signed last year.

That's sounds completely like Jermaine's dad

My family and I had the luxury of meeting JD's dad in Baltimore a few years ago on the elevator of the team hotel. My GF was wearing a Konerko jersey shirt and he said to her, "So you like Konerko, huh?" And, my GF was like yeah, I guess (kind of shy). And his response - with the biggest smile on his face - was, "Well my son bats behind him in the line-up!" We had a nice little conversation with him at that point, and later saw him at he park and he first said hi to us (and then commented that we should've shared his taxi because it was so hot out; we had walked).

The following year in Tucson, we saw him walking between the park and team facility with JD and we said hello again. To no surprise, he remembered us. JD stuck around and signed some autographs for us, which was nice, but it's really cool to see how proud he is of JD.

UofC, the same article said his dad lost his chance to play with the pistons in 1971 because of a knee injury.

about JD. in 2001 I was in a program in ireland, one of the other participants knew JD from playing baseball in HS or something. He talked about him in only glowing terms, even when the group that had played ball with him would go to a game in the RF bleachers and razz him all game. Before that, I had no care whatsoever for JD (he wasn't a Sox player, so..) but after that I always kept an eye on him (and felt for him when he injured his leg so badly) and was really excited when he was coming to play for the Sox. You can tell alot about a person from their friends and even with a degree of seperation, JD seemed like a super cool guy. It would make sense that would also apply to his dad.

This game will be remembered by me watching this one on my Blackberry. I went to see Dennis De Young (fantastic show) in Chicago Ridge. Since I'm on call, I had to bring my Blackberry. I was watching the game cast of the gamecast. Wife and I went nuts when I saw the famous in play (runs) when Dye was up. I knew it was out. Dennis didn't wait too long to give us an update. :D:

This is a way cool story... found it late last night on the Detroit News website and just HAD to email it to a former co-worker (we used to work in the same office but he's now at the airport... he'd always bust my chops whenever his TIGERS would win).
