Anyone else think Marte will wilt in the pressure cooker in NY? Good deal to get Nady, but they didn't do their homework on Marte.

That's a nice haul for the Pirates.

Marte might not fare so well under the lights in N.Y

Stranger things have happened. Jerry Manuel is thriving right now.

I'm not so sure, considering only one of the four the Pirates are getting back has any major league service time. I'm glad I'm not a Pirates season-ticket holder.

Considering the garbage they got for more talented players in the past, this is at least an interesting mix of players. I'm not pining to be a Pirate fan by any stretch of the imagination, but they've historically done much, much worse.

Both of them are probably pissed off.

Service time is a bad way to measure future value of a player.

You're right. Tabata is the only one that's a decent prospect and he's got character issues. The Pirates are giving away players again for nothing because they won't pay them. http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/images/spacer.gif

That's a nice haul for the Pirates.

I can't agree. Tabata is not what the Yankee hype machine advertised. The three pitchers are warm bodies. They gave up 2 really solid major leaguers and did not get a single player the Yankees really value. Horrible trade for the Pirates. Then again, what else is new?

The Pirates are my second favorite team and deals like this, while now predictable, truly piss me off. I'm not delusional to think that Nady and Marte were the final pieces to the Pirates' march to the World Series (or even a .500 record) but all they are getting back is a sack of crap. I would be surprised if any of these prospects were to play an entire season for the Bucs and that's saying a lot. This all goes back to the cheapness of Pittsburgh ownership. Sometimes you have to pay to play and ownership has always taken the cheap way out.

does anybody else think they could have gotten a lot more for those two? lefty bullpen arms are at a premium, and nady is an outfielder with an ops well over .900 having a monster year

edit: i don't know a lot about the guys from the yanks system, but from how people talk, it sounds like the yankees over value their own farm system by a lot

I agree the Pirates should have attempted to get at least 1 major leaguer in this deal. I'm just pumped because one of the guys in the trade, George Kontos, is a guy I played travel baseball with at the end of high school/early college days. He went to Niles West HS and then to Northwestern. He's a righty SP with a good fastball in the low to mid 90's and a hard sharp curveball. He was drafted by the Yankees a few years back in the 3rd or 5th rd or so. I'm glad to see he might actually have an easier path to the majors now that he's with PIT since their farm system is below average and the SP's on their current roster are underperforming.

Best of luck, George! :gulp:

Edit: There was a blog update saying there are 2 different people in that trade, that Coke and Kontos were taken out of it. Mmmmmkay. Well still, best of luck in NY George!

Marte has been one of the most consistent relievers from year to year for the past 6-7 years.

He ended 2005 roughly, but I wouldn't want the Cubs to have him.

Gorzelanny or Snell could be next, even though they've both been terrible this year, especially Gorz since he was sent down, but they're still talented. Bay probably would be next.

If I was a Pirate fan, I'd be heated like hell. How they don't get a major league contributor is beyond me.

That's what I think. Marte has a tendency to choke.

Karstens looked good today, shutting out the Cubs at Wrigley. Hopefully this trade will end up working out for the Pirates after all.

One of the under the radar things about the deadline, we all know the top NL central clubs got stronger, but the bottom feeders get even weaker for this year. Yeah, Pitt won today, but now Nady and Bay gone, no way you can argue to me they are better than the Royals or Indians
