I posted this in the Russell thread, but this probably deserves its own thread, too.

This is the right move. Richard is the only starter at Charlotte who really deserves the shot. He's been very consistent and effective. Broadway is still searching for consistency, and he has not been that effective lately.

I don't understand this Street stuff unless Linebrink is done. Sure its great to get more relief but unless Linebrink is done its not a current need. If they are mortgaging the future it should be for a starter with Contreras hurt, long in the tooth and Floyd and Danks possibly getting worn out.

Very interesting move. This guy seemingly has come out of nowhere (to those of us who don't follow the minors very closely), but he's excelled this year and is going to the Olympics.

Even if he doesn't fare well on Tuesday (if he is indeed starting for us, any official word yet?), he may have a bright future with the Sox. If he does well, it may be a huge boost for us this year.

Masset hasn't really been the long reliever that he was last year, and Richard has started in the minors, while they sent down Russell who was relieving. I seriously doubt that, that'd be a real head-scratcher.

People should be excited to see what Clayton Richards can do.

Lefties are a precious commodity. Maybe its a long shot but at least Clayton is Olympic caliber.

But instead why don't we argue about our own creditials.

Well since Richard has been replaced, could we see atleast a couple of starts from him (until Contreras is off the DL/rehab assignment) , instead of starting just once as Buehrle's replacement?

It would suck that Richard would only have one outing, and then get sent down shortly thereafter and not be in the Olympics because of the callup.

Yeah. If the guy is making comments (http://www.jconline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080721/SPORTS0104/807210328) about coming up, I don't think there's much of a question.

As for pitching in the Olympics, I think he's probably just as excited about being called up to the bigs. Although, next thing you know, the Tribune will be writing about how the Sox are anti-USA (even though 3 guys on the USA roster have now been called up since the announcement of the roster - last week).

I actually think that teams don't want to lose players for a month and put them under someone elses control (especially pitchers), so they are bringing them up to avoid the headache.

If Buehrle does miss, it could turn out OK.

I mean, it has the potential to add a Buehrle start [Friday or Saturday] to the Detroit series, while still allowing him to start in the Minnesota series. Before, he was only going to start in the series against the Twins.

Eep. I hope Javy can put in 6-7 tonight, otherwise our pen could get put through a ton of innings before that vital Detroit/Minny road series...

It speaks volumes that I feel better about a start by a guy I've heard only by name than a start by Masset.

This sereis against the Rangers could be ugly with Masset and Richard throwing. This staff is in a funk right now. Hopefully the other guys pick Mark up while he's gone, becasue he has been carrying them for a while.

It's not like what the Rangers are throwing at us will be much better. Maybe we'll have to slug it out, but we're capable.

You must not know about Duchscherer's past history. He made the all-star team a few years back as MIDDLE RELIEVER. Now that's pretty hard to do, don't you think? Pitcher's park or no pitcher's park, he still pitches fairly well on the road with a ERA in the mid 2s. I would die to have Duchscherer on this team.

As long as he's not a wuss like Gavin was, he should be alright. Everything I've heard says he has a good mental make-up, though.

Also, they're not nearly as good on the road as they are at home. And it is possible to shut them down, as the Twins did it this weekend, and so did Danks before the break.

Gavin has control problems in the first place, and he seems to get rattled pretty easily if things don't go his way. It'll be a interesting series against the Rangers to say the least. Based on their 3 run performance in Minnesota, we might be catching them at the right time. Or it could just be that the Twins' pitching staff is just on fire right now. Either way, the bullpen needs to gather themselves once again and the offense will have to score a bunch of runs. No more getting shut out by Luis Mendoza!

IMO, Masset is probably the better choice to go with here. He pitched very well in Texas in his two innings of work. Too bad Ozzie pulled him early and let Boone Logan and Adam Russel totally ruin that game...

BTW, I really hope Buehrle does pitch in the final game of the series.

Millwood's pitching for Texas, meaning we can have the matchup of Buehrle and Millwood once again. Does that ring a bell to anybody else?

In the very little I could find about him: mostly upper-80s; can sometimes reach back and touch the lower-90s. Rotoworld said he topped out at 91 in the Futures Game.

He's supposed to work fast and rely heavily on his sinker.

ok so with all of these call ups (Russell, Carassco, now Richard) why is KW picking this fellows instead of these high-touted top draft picks we've been hearing about forever, or so it seems, like Broadway, Haeger or even Jack Egbert, who despite his W-L rec, looks to be really good

Egbert was drafted in the 13th round and Haeger in the 25th round. Richard was drafted in the 8th, and Russell was drafted in the 6th round.
